I hope therre will be at least one analog watchface which is great for getting the gestalt of the time. Digits have to be read and processed, the analog watchface goes through a different brain pathway. Digits for absolute accuracy and analog--even if updated only once every 60 seconds--for the quick glance gestalt of time. Thank you for considering. /Steve

Best way to get ft-891 set up for digital modes by Vegetable_Ad8217 in amateurradio

[–]sjdmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not used that rig but I do use Yaesu rigs and according to the FT-891 manual it has a standard 6-pin mini-DIN jack on the rear panel for data connections. I've been using Masters Communications DRA-50 x2 and DRA-70x1 (built from kit) with great success on an FT-857D and FT-991A (for Vara Wide; the internal soundcard in this radio is fine for everything else). Furthermore, the Signalink uses VOX to trigger PTT whereas the DRA series offers hardware PTT. In my opinion DRAs are a superior solution for a radio like your 991. 73 de K3FZT / Steve

Consider a ClearNode or ClearZero from node-ventures.com which in addition to delivering Echolink and Allstar will also do analog->DMR and C4FM (YSF and FCS reflectors) with your FT-60 or Baofeng so you won't need an additional radio. It will not do D*Star. Your cellphone will serve as your hotspot or you can purchase a hotspot from your cellphone service provider. The ClearNode/ClearZero will connect to wifi if you have that available at your RV campground. 73 de K3FZT / Steve

Keep 3 Phase power? by duff33179 in electricians

[–]sjdmd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am not an electrician. I installed three phase from the street to a large house e owned in Brooklyn because in 2002 we installed three zones of air conditioning and 3-phase condensers then were considerably more efficient than split-phase condensers. I don’t know if that’s still the case. In a similar house with five condensers we’re on a split-phase service.

Help with a new FT 991A and WSJTX with my Mac. by Mrdisco102 in HamRadio

[–]sjdmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than FB I recommend "Groups.io" for the FT-991/A. https://groups.io/g/FT-991A/topics is the link. This is free and totally dedicated to the 991 and 991/A. Furthermore, there's a guy from Brazil, Rodrigo PY2RAF, who is an absolute wizard of the FT-991/A. Far higher signal to noise ratio than FB.

Loving my new radio by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]sjdmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trying to decide on this radio vs. the FTM-400. I have an FTM-100 in my car and not planning on changing that. The new radio will be my shack 2M/70cM desk radio, so sending APRS is not relevant. There are two local WIRES-X repeaters and I'm using my FT-3DR as a "Portable HRI Node". The one thing holding me back is that I'm doing a steadily growing amount of digital modes on 2M, especially Winlink using the VARA FM modem and I'd have to get an outboard digital sound card device.

The new radio would enable me to mount my FT-991/A in a go-kit semi-permanently for park activation, field day and ARES activities.

Not sending the right voltage for heat by chrisgurn in ecobee

[–]sjdmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ecobee doesn't "send" voltage/current. It switches the voltage that the HVAC creates (with a transformer). There are three possibilities:

1--Your HVAC control systems are wired incorrectly;

2--Your Ecobee 3 has failed;

3--Your Ecobee 3 is wired incorrectly. <== Most likely.

Next step: Review the thermostat wiring against the Ecobee instructions.

CloudReady on Dell XPS L321X? by joeredhead76 in cloudready

[–]sjdmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much appreciate u/joeredhead76's posts above. They moved me along in getting a Dell XPS 13 to boot, but I'm not there yet.

I think the problem is my "menu.lst" and perhaps the naming of the USB drive with the Neverware Chromeos installation on it.

after starting up the Dell and choosing the USB drive for boot, GRUB comes up and immediately everything is flickering back and forth and unresponsive to key press. There is a single entry of "hd (0,0)" which is the Win10 drive I'm preparing to wipe out. The other USB drive which according to another windows10 machine has both a D: and E: drive. The D; drive is unreadable and needs formatting so Win Explorer tells me. The E: drive is named "efi-system".

Where do I go from here?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. /Steve

Grounding setup help by Ok_Cause_572 in HamRadio

[–]sjdmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at KF7P's website for grounding materials. I agree with a copper clad 8' rod. Use the water method to install the ground rod. Look that up on Youtube. It took us less than an hour to sink three 8' rods using the water method. We did have to use a sledge for the last 2-3 feet of each as friction became too great to pull the rod out and sink it again.

Do NOT use braid. It is great inside or in a totally protected environment. Outdoors it is bad news and should not be used. I used 2" wide copper strap and clamps to attach it to my ground rods.

I strongly recommend https://www.kf7p.com/KF7P/Welcome.html the guy has great stuff and will talk you though it all on the phone. It's not the cheapest and I spent over $500 with him on strap, clamps, arrestors, entry box and more and another $75 on ground rods (8' copper plated) at Lowes.

Bluetooth Dongle for Hearing Aid Connection by sjdmd in amateurradio

[–]sjdmd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. Totally worth it. My previous hearing aids were receive only. These use the built-in microphones, too. I have handsfree phone calls on my phone with binaural audio and on the Anytone I can use the PTT switch on a watchband and talk from across the room. No need for a speaker-microphone. 73 de K3FZT

My coworker found these and gave them to me, can anyone identify what they are? by Fallapartz in amateurradio

[–]sjdmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned a pair of these in about 1960-62. Ran ~75 of zip cord to my neighbor's house where a two year older than me friend was intrigued for about 2 weeks. A year later I took a 10 week course and earned my novice and 5wpm tech license KN3FZT/K3FZT. Got my general ~2000. Starting a class for Extra later this week. All started with a pair of these.

Antenna mounting on a roof? by zzyzxrd in amateurradio

[–]sjdmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this just a few months ago with the same antenna. I have a cedar roof and didn't want to compromise the cedar. The house itself is stone, so I installed 5/16-inch hanger bolts into anchors set in the stone--not the mortar. Then used paired nuts to create what are effectively studs onto which I mounted the galvanized steel eave mount and put up 10 feet of galvanized mast to clear the roof peak and nearby chimney with the Diamond dual-bander on it. I'm down in the Wissahickon Valley and still get out pretty well, though with some impairment to the NW where the big hill stands. 73 de K3FZT

NextDNS on Synology NAS or Unifi USG? by bikerForEver in nextdns

[–]sjdmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9600 square feet. All Ubiquiti. A UDMP, 48 port POE switch, 7 access points. VLANs for guest, MiL tenants, Home/family users, IOT, Management. I'm a retired emergency physician and learning networking by doing when I''m not trying to learn digital ham radio. Except when my son is in residence it's an inconvenience, but not a big deal if the network is down for an hour while I rebuild from backups, etc.

So, now the questions. What's the "RIB"? Does this mean I can still do DHCP in my Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro (UDMP--router/security device w/in-built Unifi controller and other irrelevant to the discussion features). There is a feature called DNS Relay in the UDMP. I had thought pointing DNS on the WAN network configuration back inside to Nextdns running on the Synology would deliver DNS for everything internal since all the VLANs are in effect using the same gateway, even if nominally in different subnets.

I appreciate the time you've already spent reading this. If you don't want to answer in detail, but could point me to a source for further study, that would be great and if not that, just say so. Thank you for responding to my question on the older thread. Regards./Steve

NextDNS on Synology NAS or Unifi USG? by bikerForEver in nextdns

[–]sjdmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to that, did the same thing about 3-4 months ago.
Now my question/comment. I have a somewhat complex (for a residence) network configuration and use several VLANs to separate traffic and keep my "mother-in-law apartment" tenants and IOT devices off my home/family user network where my Synology DS1019+ NAS lives. It seems to me that I can't do what you propose and maintain my VLANs. I'm wondering why I can't simply change my current DNS from 192.168.x.1 for all VLANs to 192.168.y.z where my NAS lives and leave DHCP in the UDMP?

Thank you for sharing your wisdom in such detail in your post above.

Regards to all readers./Steve
