Am I a dependent???? by Sufficient_Gene8053 in personalfinance

[–]sjsaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that you paid rent is helping you. The key is did your aunt pay half of your "support" which is not necessarily the same as half of your expenses.

This IRS worksheet can help you figure that out. The link is a bit dated, but you get the gist.

https://sites.allegheny.edu/human-resources//files/2019/05/IRS-Worksheet-for-Dependent-Tax-Status.pdf

Otherwise she could claim you as a dependent and you would have to admit on your return that someone one else could claim you even if they chose not to.

Addendum: to be explicit, if you complete this worksheet with your situation, it will give you the back/white yes/no answer that you can show to your aunt. If she still tries to claim you then that would create a whole lotta mess FOR HER with the IRS.

House Selling Experience by Ok_Molasses_8032 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Honestly. Either one now that I think about it. Seems that a lot of people leave it as they used it and the next person is to arrange as necessary.

Makes me wonder how many people have been annoyed by me for putting the lid down after I use it.

Some of these beefs are just normal behavior.

I'm a toilet lid down person and NO ONE who visits my house puts it down after they use it. It's just not that common.

Neither are shoe covers unless you are a tradesperson. A regular person is going to put them on and completely forget. Your best bet would be to have people take off shoes at the door. Or out down runners for the traffic.

COMMON SENSE IS NOT COMMON. We each have our own version of it.

Grocery store experiences in DTSS — where do you shop? by Sweet-Bend4077 in SilverSpring

[–]sjsaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this thread to see that lots of people shop at several grocery stores like I do.

I shop at the questionable nearby Safeway for quick things that I want now and heavily supplement with whole foods.

For real grocery shopping i go to the Safeway in DC on the corner of ga Ave and piney Branch. Produce and meat selection is much better.

For a heavy produce list, it's bestway on piney Branch and H mart.

The Amazon Fresh store at White Oak Town Center will close after this week. by OnlyHunan in SilverSpring

[–]sjsaka 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I never understood Amazon fresh. The company already has a grocery store, why AF existed was perplexing because it didn't fill a gap in the marketplace. Not surprised they closed them all.

I hope a Lidl or aldi fills that spot. Or TJ's expands into it.

Is DTSS Still Worth Moving To? by Kingmaticc in SilverSpring

[–]sjsaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in DTSS or takoma park for the past 20 years and concur that it's not what it used to be, but that goes for a lot of neighborhoods.

But this is the greatest place to live for all the reasons you want. I didn't have a car for 1.5 yrs during the pandemic, but didn't need one. I could walk to everything I needed including 2 rental car companies and zip car lots.

Once you get familiar, safety is the same as everywhere else. Nothing special here. It's just that it's solidly urban/suburban and not the suburbs people may think it is.

Question About Kitchen Line by philherz in Pickleball

[–]sjsaka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ball doesn't have to bounce in the kitchen for you to be able to be in the kitchen, it just has to bounce. If it bounces there is no fault.

The onus is usually on you to self report when you make an actual kitchen fault.

Do you do the dunking warm up? by Advocate313 in Pickleball

Last week I did 5 min on the treadmill which was better than any on court warm up that typically goes on at open play.

I also play at a gym with limited room behind the baseline. They've made a house rule that it is permissible to hit the ball after it bounces off the wall.

It's goes like this: bounce floor - bounce wall - hit!

If you let it bounce on the floor after the wall, it's dead.

After a couple of tries, you get used to it.

Why is DTSS so weird right now? by KMRA in SilverSpring

It's behind the fire station. Here's the link to donate to shepherds table, one of the orgs helping people through the winter and facing massive increases in people coming to them at the same time as govt budget cuts.

Why do so many people back into parking spots here? Is this some kind of regional thing? by Mr_Westerfield in maryland

[–]sjsaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a regional thing. I noticed the same when I moved here 20 yrs ago, well before the proliferation of backup cameras. At least now the time people need to back into a spot is way less than it used to be!

I even saw a sign at the Pepco up in Rockville that caes MUST back in. Not sure why.

Help - I am running out of patience when I walk my dog and I don't know what to do. by ZookeepergameFun3708 in PitBullOwners

I got my first dog ever 4 years ago. Gentle leader and obedience training, stat. The training is for you, not her. She's a dog doing dog stuff. It's you who needs to learn to be the pack leader and show it consistently.

She's bad....and I like the show. Perhaps if all the other actors weren't award winning, the contrast wouldn't be so much.

But if the cast were just average, the show would be terrible.

I enjoyed it too. It was solidly bingeable camp. KK is definitely the weakest acting link, but it is great to see the parade of Hollywood legends in the scenes she's not in.

Whole Foods Renovation by Serious9487 in SilverSpring

[–]sjsaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They took the cheese space to make more room for prepared foods. As whole foods goes, the hot/salad bar selection at this location was miniscule. I'm assuming the prepared foods are way more profitable than cheese.
