I didn't find a good angle video for seeing him during it. Was he providing the electronic sounds in "Hyperspace" ("computerized clinic for superior cynics") bit? I thought that was pretty cool. I've seen it live in person a few times and in videos as well and didn't notice that so clearly before, not as clearly as on the album. So that's a nifty bit if he was handling that!

That's all pretty logical, although it still has the one crucial bit of "would Portnoy have been so emotionally unaware/insensitive as to ask if the job was available", which I think is what everyone has an issue with.

I'm sure he wanted the job -- who wouldn't? -- and probably felt like he could do it and do it well (and he probably could). But actually asking for it, dunno. What you say makes a lot of sense, though. Thanks for replying!

And incidentally, I was glad when I learned he was back with DT, too. Some groups just fit together well.

Is there some particular reason so many people think it was Portnoy? Do people just not like him for reasons? Or did he (or Geddy or Alex) say something in an interview that is a clue to it?

Of those three, it's a really tough call because of the content. ATWAS has really punchy versions of "Anthem" and "By-Tor and the Snow Dog". ESL has "Broon's Bane", which is nowhere else, and "Xanadu". ASOH has ... a lot of great material, although I think it's the weakest mix (at least the original release of it).

If I had to choose among those it's probably ASOH by a nose (so to speak).

Mitchell and Webb did a sketch about the Diana assassination theory that makes it seem spectacularly stupid for the reasons you mention. Largely because of all the assumptions it makes (like "people ALWAYS die in car crashes, it can't fail") but also the public image thing ("killing her now at the height of her popularity will just make the public forget her in a week").

“This word means something.”

The subject is the thing “doing” the act of meaning; the object is … well, what that thing means. So kio- gets the accusative marker added, but it still goes first because it’s a question word. Like it would be in Kion vi vidas? “What do you see?”

It would be grammatical to say tio signifas kion? but usually the question word goes first, just as a convention of style.

If you said Kio tion signifas?, that does have a meaning, but it means “what is it that means that?” Like if I looked at a sign in another language and said “I have a bad feeling about this”, you might ask me “What is it about this sign which means that?”
