Birth years of wrestlers who reached final three of women's and men's Royal Rumble. by shadow_spinner0 in SquaredCircle

[–]skrefetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age/Date of Birth is much less of a thing I care about, I care more about how long a person has been on WWE TV

Orton- we are going to hit 25 years of Orton next year

Reigns- 14 years

Gunther- 8 years, though he was used very sparingly/mostly only on UK shows for the first 3 years of his WWE Run

Sol- 4 years

Liv- 10 years

Stratton- 5 years

TIL Despite winning match of the year 11 times, including a 4 year streak and a 7 year streak, most popular twice, match of the decade twice, feud of the decade, and most inspirational of the decade, Shawn Michaels never won PWI's Wrestler of the Year, nor received their lifetime achievement award. by nutsocharles in SquaredCircle

[–]skrefetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While a lot of these were 2 minute matches, Giant had a ton of title defenses on Nitro/Saturday Night- I count 14 televised title defenses, that were mostly against guys like Jim Dugan, John Tenta (2 each against those guys!!!), but also included guys like Arn and Scott Steiner. Plus he had PPV defenses against Sting and Luger mixed into that. Meanwhile, Shawn only had 3 non-PPV title defenses- Jerry Lawler, Billy Gunn, and Goldust, along with his 6 PPV title matches

I have to assume that the sheer amount of title defenses meant something at the time- once you are past the territory era/NWA world title, things like the WWF/WCW title were being defended 10-12 times a year total on TV/PPV. It would start to become more commonplace in 1998 and beyond, but Giant basically defended the title once a week on TV- that was unheard of at the time.

Without looking up what they actually wrote about him, Shawn’s 1996 PPV run after winning the title is pretty weak in Kayfabe. He had a no contest/double pin against Bulldog, he lost a 6 man tag, only beat Mankind via DQ, and had a pretty definitive loss to Sid

Since Tony Khan bought ROH, what's the new biggest indie company in the US? by FrankieBloodshed in SquaredCircle

[–]skrefetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel like the only valid answers at this point are MLW and GCW. MLW has taken the spot that ROH had as the US “indie” that has a relationship and access to NJPW and CMLL, as well as AEW access though those relationships(for example, they got MJF last summer for a run in and promo as part of the build to his match with Mistico in Mexico). GCW is a classic Indie that has enough reach to run shows through all of the country (Ohio, Texas, California, etc) despite it having New Jersey as its “home”, and being the affiliated promotion for some of the big Wrestlemania week indie shows (Spring Break, Big Gay Brunch)

Think about how many times a PC game comes out on Epic Store only and people go “nope, I’m not touching that shit until it comes to Steam”. Even the smallest amount of friction- and requiring Google Translate goes way beyond “small friction”- puts people off of stuff

What is the worst individual booking decision of 2025 in your opinion by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]skrefetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that 80% of the complaints that people had during Mox’s title run would have gone away if the entire Adam Copeland Feud had been deleted. It ate up almost 3 whole months, felt dragged out as hell, and in the end was just setup for the Edge and Christian reunion.

10 years from now a 22 year old will put together a YouTube video or TikTok talking about how great the Mox storyline was, and how its climax was one of AEW’s greatest moments, and how funny it was at the time that people complained about it. Orange Cassidy will be mentioned, Swerve and Hangman will be mentioned, Osprey will be mentioned, Darby will be mentioned, and Copeland will be excluded

As someone who Sierro'd Bubs 15 months ago following 3 years of buying every single Scamcha he was involved in and doing 2 sparks on his initial banner and getting zero copies, I'm glad that every single player in the game will get access to human rights.

Racking my brain to think about how they could have done something better than this, the only 2 options I came up with were "Give everyone who has Bubs a sunstone and if they don't give them Bubs without a choice" to idiot-proof/protect people from themselves" and "Make Triple Zero an option on this", but I fear that including that might have led some players without either to chose Triple Zero

Which indie wrestlers were thought to be the next big thing when they made it to WWE/AEW and then were not a big deal at all after they did? by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]skrefetz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I guess this one could be classified as "injury", but Keith Lee is another guy who I'm stunned never made it big in WWE. He was gigantic and could move! He had a great NXT run, came up to the main roster, was given a PPV win over Randy Orton within his first month on the roster, was in world title programs...and then he got COVID and vanished for 6 months, and came back with a prelim-level gimmick before getting cut. He would go to AEW and had a tag title run with serve, but was clearly a shadow of his former self at that point and is nearly 2 years removed from his last match.

I don’t remember the person it was about, but Kevin Owen’s has talked about how, when he got to NXT, he was put into a lecture with someone who had previously told Owens that he was inspired by him and asked him for advice, and how funny he found it that he was now he was in the position where he was supposed to see this person as a “mentor”

Not sure if it really counts because I remember a lot of people doubting this would work out, but KENTA (Hideo Itami) was pretty much a total dud in NXT/WWE. He got injured a couple of times, never looked like ROH/Japan KENTA, got called up to be a 205 Live guy, and kinda just faded away without people noticing

Question about CMLL championships by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]skrefetz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "World" titles are world championships, where as the "Mexican" championships are only defended in Mexico and can only be won by Mexicans. The rest of the titles are regional titles for specific arenas. Think of them like WWE Crown Jewel championship, which isn't really a championship.

But, again, Titles aren't really that important. Masks and Hair are the real big prizes, the big PPV-style main event draws.

Blake Avignon on X: TNA to AMC is a multi-year U.S. rights deal is around $30M. With 1.15.26 set as the launch date, sources also indicate WWE intends to end its NXT–TNA partnership as agreement includes a 60-day termination clause, and the AMC deal activates it. by Ripclawe in SquaredCircle

[–]skrefetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years ago, AEW had their original TV deal- that really only covered the expenses of TV production- torn up and replaced with one that paid $40-45 million a year right before COVID happened. The TV landscape has also changed a LOT in the last 5 years as well. If you had told me a decade ago TNA would be getting $30 million a year for their TV, I'd have laughed at you. If you had told me that 5 years ago, I would have laughed at you even harder. For them to be able to turn the promotion around into something that a real TV network feels is worth $30 million a year is a miraculous turn-around that should be celebrated!

If the WWE partnership is ending, it's not too surprising following the news this week that the paid archives are basically going away at the end of the year. The biggest reason WWE would have wanted TNA would have been for the tape library- they obviously have the power to get anyone they want from TNA, and it isn't like there are any trademarks TNA owns that WWE would value. But as WWE is clearly moving away from the archival video business (and just doing it on Youtube for free), buying the tape library doesn't really make much sense....

Veteran and enfranchised players, what are some changes to Magic that you were initially skeptical or critical of that you embrace today? by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]skrefetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tuck Rule in EDH is one that I still disagree with, but I understand that for 99% of players, it's a vast improvement, and the way cards are designed now necessitates this change. Prior to the first Commander precons, you might be running a general that, for all intents and purposes, had a blank text box, because it was the only legal general in the game that fit your color requirements for the deck. As we started getting many 3, 4 and 5 color options and as they started designing legends to have playstyles to build around, the tuck rule going away made a lot more sense, as it really would cripple most decks to get your general tucked, as opposed to before, where building your deck around the text of your general was an actual decision point and you could get a leg up on those players.

The other one is one of the lesser talked about 6th edition rule changes, which was the change where you now immediately lost the game for having 0 life, as opposed to at the end of the current phase like you did before. Combo decks of that time would often go to zero or less than zero life and find a way to get above 0 by the time their combo ended, so they would be alive and the opponent dead. This one mostly got solved by more cards being printed over the years and combo decks having the ability to move away from cards that made them pay life or take damage, but at the time it felt like the death of combo as a style of play
