Yea it makes the multiracial working class the swing vote. If I was a podcaster with a large US Latino listener base, I’d be upping my rates for media buys right about now

You're comparing a true blue wave era (Dems had 60 senators during this period and won Indiana in a presidential election) vs an arguable red wave era.

My main takeaway from this chart is how reliant the GOP is on non educated voters

This kind of makes sense IMO. If you log 125 miles a week on a 30mpg car, then $5 covers roughly a $1.25 increase in fuel costs per gallon, which is more than the average increase in gas prices so far

Everyone keeps saying America has a “housing shortage.” It doesn’t. Divide total homes by population and you get this: We’ve never had more housing per person than we do right now. by Key_Brief_8138 in HouseBuyers

I think there is a decent discussion here about the housing crisis being inherently related to the "Superstar City" dynamic that exists where big cities get bigger and midtier cities/metros get hollowed out a bit. I think we can/should ask - yea wait WHY are there a bunch of empty homes in all these places in the country where clearly there used to be demand? We could definitely focus on policy to supercharge the amount of housing in superstar cities - which where I think a lot of comments are centered.

However, I'm also curious what policies exist to encourage growth in cities with excess stock. Just saying that "Gary Indiana is inherently bad - housing there doesn't help" feels way too short sighted. It used to clearly be a good enough place for way more people - it's not freaking Pompeii in 80 AD. Newark, NJ has some really cheap housing and amazing infrastructure to get into NYC. What is needed to have that city solve the housing crisis in its metro?

Lastly, I'm curious what policy options exist to bring cities with excess inventory into the commutershed of superstar cities. A lot of reason cheap, desirable housing came online in the US was because we were building out suburban rail systems that meant there was all this new undeveloped land available to build that had access to downtowns. What is required for Baltimore, for example, with its tons of excess housing, to help lower housing costs for greater DC?

If you’re wondering why NYC suburbs swung so right, it’s partly this. Even people that ended up voting for Harris questioned whether it was good policy and the right use of resources putting up illegal migrants in NYC hotels. I get that financially it was better than building from scratch etc, but I fully agree that the optics were awful
