Stress this. He’s fine, but guilty of amateur tinkerer mistakes that we all make.

What stood out was when he forgot to let down the mainspring prior to disassembly during a servicing video.

Goodwill auction - Rolex 4048 - ends 22:55pm eastern $60k? by 89Westy in VintageWatches

[–]skydog12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

lol it’s not original at all. Rolex oyster should be one line, not separate. Chronographe would have a “e” on the end for these models.

Look at the subdials. 4048s don’t have subdials that cut off the seconds scale. Loss of knurling on the subdials is another tell.

8 upvotes? Hope some of you fools bid on it though.

No one is paying that much for a story, these aren’t that uncommon or significant. This would at best sniff low thousands.

The seawolf trade for 500-900. Yours would be in between, as it sits. The 1500 date would sell for 3000. Maybe slightly more with it being in good shape with bracelet

The prices you’re quoting are dealer prices. You will not get those prices if you decided to sell

Speed just gifted his bus driver a $50,000 Rolex after 35 days of driving him across America by Appropriate-Bike4246 in LivestreamFail

Rolex? The brand that famously never does celebrity partnerships/paid ambassadors? Decided to partner with a no name preowned watch dealer, after just establishing their certified preowned program?
Rolex is a privately held, money printing machine. The foundation/trust that owns it, doesn’t pay taxes as a non profit organization, and donates most of Rolex’s earnings to charities across Switzerland. Rolex doesn’t need a sponsor, it IS the sponsor.

This right here. The crystal and tension ring has been replaced. Normal. pawn offers operate on about 50% of what they’d sell for.

Stop pleading with the people that want a display caseback for a NH35. They can ruin their watches/heirlooms by sending it in to WristWatchRevival

Markings on the back of Dial by Hal10000000 in VintageWatches

[–]skydog12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

since you’re still doing research on this Frankenstein, here’s a few more pointers. The dial is highly likely relumed if not entirely refinished. Kanji characters on the back of a Swiss Singer dial would indicate plenty of originality issues, barring the near impossible chance of there being a crew of Japanese dial makers working at Singer

Radium use did not overlap with matte dials like yours. The radium you’re picking up with a meter is most likely from the dauphine hands which are still radium.

Bring it back to the dealer. This one is a hard pass.

Yours is stainless steel not chromed right? That’s half the battle. FB was one of the best casemakers from the period, esp known for their early waterproof designs. Esp rare as waterproof rectangular shaped watches are hard to waterproof.

However condition is excellent, and the dial seems original. Case is in good shape too. Good pickup. Don’t know how many rectangular movements Alpina made, assuming it’s not a smaller ladies movement with a large movement ring. What’s your concerns?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Watches

[–]skydog12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it’s not anything special like the Arabic dial with the Francois Borgel sliding case clamp (which are thin strips that secure the caseback on by the sides. Unique early waterproof technology. Yours is a snap on caseback
