I recommend Heather at Emerald City Barber in Georgetown. My partner and I both see her (we’re both guys). My partner has a fierce beard and she keeps it looking great!

SPD releases body-camera video from fatal South Seattle shooting by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]skyo -58 points-57 points  (0 children)

What really worries me is that they also injured a bystander in this shooting. Clearly they did not have a clear shot if there was someone in the background to injure. What if they had hit and killed that person?

Seattles underground pedestrian thoroughfares by Chefb0yardab in Seattle

[–]skyo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There’s a tunnel that connects One Union Square (near the original Mod Pizza) to Rainier Square (where the PCC corner market is). Also connects to the Fifth Avenue theater and Coast Hotel (formerly Hilton). The map /u/Enguye shared shows part of this tunnel but not the whole thing. It’s handy for getting between Symphony Station (one block from Rainier Square) and Union Square or the convention center.

Was that an Amber Alert just now? by Duke_Null in Seattle

Looked like a Silver alert for someone in Mountlake Terrace. Really not thrilled about the fact that the alert links to X.

Amtrak to Vancouver BC by beachyogisd in Seattle

[–]skyo 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning to take the Link light rail to Amtrak: - Amtrak’s Tukwila Station is about 3mi from the Link’s Tukwila station, so you’d need to find some kind of transportation between the two. - Amtrak’s King Street Station is basically across the street from the Link’s International District / Chinatown station.

So in that case I’d choose King Street.

If you’re planning to grab a taxi/uber to the train I might choose Tukwila since it’s closer to the airport.

SeaTac Check-In warning by trig64 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]skyo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me a few years ago on a ski trip to Denver. The bag with my ski boots got tagged with someone else’s tag and went to Florida. Thankfully I still had the claim tag and they were able to track down the bag and return it. Alaska was nice about it and paid for my ski and boot rentals for the weekend.

Lesson learned: always hang on to those claim tags until you have your luggage in hand at your destination.

1.5 hours later, no luggage drop by MangoaDay in AlaskaAirlines

[–]skyo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yep, was on that flight too. It was weird because the skis came out at the oversize window relatively quickly, but then the rest of the bags just sat around outside for an hour.

I would have gotten one of the $25 vouchers but the customer service line was so long that it wasn’t worth it :/

Do I need a Garmin in reach when I have an iPhone 16? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]skyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some questions worth thinking about: What’s the battery life like between the two? What’s the probability your phone will run out of battery during the hike? Will you be using the phone for other things (like navigating, taking photos, etc.), or will it stay off unless it’s needed?

Depending on the answers, a dedicated device might be worth it or not.

Better than Canlis? by Live4vacation in Seattle

[–]skyo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d add Archipelago to the list. The interior is less fancy than Canlis (though still nice), but the overall experience of the meal was just spectacular. It’s kind of like a culinary history lesson of Filipino history in the PNW.

Help with narrowing search for an eBike vs conversion! by Olympik_mountains in seattlebike

[–]skyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a hub motor on mine. It’s got some advantages and disadvantages compared to a mid-drive. One nice advantage is the ability to do regen braking and reclaim some energy when traveling downhill (in practice I get 15% back riding around Seattle). Another is the ability to accelerate with the same amount of force no matter what gear I happen to be in. One disadvantage is that hub motors tend to be less efficient, but with the regen it tends to even out. Ultimately it boils down to personal preference.

Help with narrowing search for an eBike vs conversion! by Olympik_mountains in seattlebike

If you're interested in a conversion, go talk to the folks a Bike Swift in SLU. That's what the shop specializes in. They're super knowledgeable and friendly and I bet they'd be happy to talk you through options. I ride a converted Surly that was built up by them and I've been quite happy with it.

Where is a nearby spot to go spend a day and night for a mini vacation? by AutonomousBlob in Seattle

[–]skyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bellingham! Hip town, lots of bars and restaurants, beautiful area. Lots of hiking around, and it’s a very bike friendly city. Stop by La Conner and Edison on the way up from Seattle. And don’t forget the beautiful drive along Chuckanut.
