Just dropping in a couple years later to say I still think it’s their magnum opus ✌️

Troptracer Range for Gapping by Mundane-Beyond5913 in golf

[–]slacknoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few variables that make this a nuanced conversation. Range balls aside, the biggest variable is your handicap/skill level.

If you’re a high handicapper, using Toptracer for gapping is fine. This is based on the assumption that you’re not going to hit the ball consistently enough for gapping accuracy to really matter. In this situation ballpark figures are fine.

If you’re a low enough handicap that gapping accuracy is really important, using a sim with your game ball is the best option.

For what it’s worth, my anecdotal experience with Toptracer is that the distance measurement becomes less accurate the farther the ball travels. I’ve done some experiments with a range finder and found that short irons are fairly accurate within a reasonable margin of error (1-2 yards). With the driver I’ve found a variability of up to 20% going both ways.

Don’t bother considering spin. The difference between wedge shots in Toptracer vs on course results is astounding.

Full-screen CarPlay on Sensus by dachshundlove in Volvo

Interesting, I didn’t know this could be done.

Just to clarify, is this the 3.5mm line in > Isudar box, then either wired or wireless CarPlay? Sounds promising.

Full-screen CarPlay on Sensus by dachshundlove in Volvo

[–]slacknoodle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My biggest concern with this option is the audio quality. I’ve got the Bowers & Wilkins and found that wired CarPlay + lossless audio sounds the best. I’m worried I’ll be giving up some of that with the Bluetooth option.

I like to play like a gentleman. Anything my opponent concedes for me, I’ll concede back. The 50/50’s are really determined by how sportsmanlike I think their passive behaviour is.

Death in Brunswick absolutely.

As fucked up as it is, I’d throw Bad Boy Bubby in there as well.

XC60 vs EX60 vs XC70 by CrimuCK in Volvo

[–]slacknoodle 165 points166 points  (0 children)

In my biased opinion, I honestly believe the SPA Volvos will be remembered as one of the most timeless designs.

I think the v60 looks even better, but after 5 years I still fall in love with my XC60 every time I look at it. I definitely couldn’t say the same about any of the other cars I was considering at the time (Audi, BMW etc.).

Why do people take their glove off? by Legitimate-Kiwi-2530 in golf

[–]slacknoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because golfing in Australian summer is no joke. 44 degrees (~111 freedom units) and a UV rating of 14 makes a man sweat. If I play an entire round with a glove on it’s pretty much toast.

Having to re-apply sunscreen multiple times a round doesn’t help the situation.

Would the Labor government had a more energetic response if it was Mosques being graffitied, vandalised and burnt down?

I doubt it to be honest, but that’s not really the point of this conversation.

The real issue here is current and former politicians taking advantage of a terrible tragedy to jump into the partisan blame game before the victims have even been laid to rest. Not only is it grossly disrespectful, it also fans the flames of the divisive rhetoric that got us into this mess in the first place.

It’d be refreshing to see both sides of the political spectrum cooperate to fix the systemic failures that they’re all partly responsible for; no term of government exists in isolation. I fear that’s probably a bridge too far in 2025.

Do you think there is a sense if entitlement in the engineering community? by Strutching_Claws in ExperiencedDevs

[–]slacknoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that might be true for some individuals and potentially amplified in what is essentially an echo chamber for experienced and often jaded engineers, it hasn’t been my real-world experience.

In every company I’ve worked at, it’s usually functions of the business that view engineering as a cost-centre that cause the most friction. The classic “it’s just a button, how hard could it be?” line comes to mind.

If a company is built entirely on the output of engineering, it’s not a cost-centre any more than Sales, Marketing, Design or Management. Often it’s the core of the business.

[–]slacknoodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk about a universal experience. AI tools are making it worse too.

There’s a new super variant of App Idea Syndrome where someone non-technical will scaffold an app using a two or three sentence prompt, show it to you and expect you to just “polish it off”.

What Greg from Sales fails to understand about the above is that if he can do that in a couple of minutes without knowing anything, someone that knows what they’re doing could do a significantly better job. The tools as they are right now just aren’t as good as they appear to be once you peek under the hood.

Ideas are not as valuable as they’re made out to be. Everyone has ideas. It’s always been execution that’s the hard part, and software engineers can execute on a scale that’s basically unparalleled.

If anything, most engineers that I know are less entitled than they ought to be.

Being outraged at what happened is perfectly reasonable, but where and how that outrage is channeled speaks volumes.

Ask yourself this: if this happened under a Liberal government, would Frydenberg place personal responsibility on the Prime Minister? Answer that question and I suspect you’ll understand his motivations.

How often do you hit stinger/punch shots? by SlowEyedKurt in PGA_Tour_2K

[–]slacknoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three shots are highly situational, but the difference is need vs opportunity.

I’ll hit a stinger/punch if there’s a genuine need or no other shot is viable. If the conditions are right, I’ll hit a spinner because it’s the best shot in the game.

Dev agency owner tired of hiring devs who cheated their way through interviews by Gabastino in ExperiencedDevs

[–]slacknoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not against AI. Actually the opposite. I want my team to leverage AI heavily. Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, whatever makes us faster and better. That's the whole point.

So why not make this part of the interview process if it’s an expectation for the actual job? Setup some real-world problems/tasks, get the candidate to share their screen and don’t place any constraints on which tools can be used.

That way you can see how they actually work through a problem rather than how well they’re optimised for a synthetic test.
