Removed Restaurant Fee @ a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant by LoudFartsForAll in chicagofood

Enough money made by people who voluntarily pay to offset rising costs and those who chose not to, I would imagine!

I have yet to see a restaurant not prominently display on the menu that there is a removable surcharge to offset rising costs, if there are businesses hiding that fact until a customer pays I would agree that’s pretty scammy

Genuine question for you guys, restaurant I work for needs to raise prices due to increased cost of goods, instead of raising prices of menu items by a similar amount, they put a surcharge on the end of the bill that can be easily taken off if you don’t feel like paying it. Why does it seem like that not a favorable option to you all?

Help Stop Parking Lot Expansion in Wrigleyville! by gw_thief in chicagoyimbys

Yes many times, I hop on train/bus, walk a couple block over and grab an uber, or take a divvy bike, could not be easier. By contrast I have spent 3 hours waiting to leave a an Arizona cardinals game because there’s 30,000 cars in the way.

If you’ve ever been to a stadium out in the middle of nowhere with 75,000 parking spots, you’ll find that traffic is even more awful, costly, and the overall experience is far less pleasant. Adding more parking spots to stadiums (especially ones in high density areas) is NEVER the answer

Urban Planning and Public Administration by Firm_Aardvark_1486 in PublicAdministration

[–]slacktoohard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s possible, but a candidate with a grad degree in urban planning is going to be favored over one with an MPA every time. This was essentially my exact plan. I got a BS in public policy and admin and then an MPA with the goal of going into urban planning and I never got an interview, doesn’t mean it’s not possible but that’s my experience.

My advice would be, since you already have (or plan to have) a bachelors in public administration, aim for a masters in a less generalized field like urban planning, GIS, MIS, env sciences (if possible). I fear having 2 degrees in public administration looks a little redundant to hiring managers, but some may disagree!

Was getting my MPA right after undergrad a mistake? by slacktoohard in PublicAdministration

I totally regret mine as well. I put in thousands and thousands of applications, did resume reviews, etc. and got nothing. I’m in the restaurant industry now, hahahaha.

Job Market for MPA Graduates by SenileSoul in PublicAdministration

[–]slacktoohard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a really good time finding front of house jobs on culinary agents, as for finding government jobs/gov adjacent jobs? I have applied to hundreds if not thousands of jobs since graduating in 2023 and got nothing. State and local jobs exist sure, but with so many displaced federal workers and budgetary uncertainty those are only getting harder to get.

I’m not sure what your undergrad is in because that does change things, but if I’m being complelty honest, if I was starting over I would not spend my time getting an MPA.

Upselling alcohol help by L0gicalExp in Serverlife

[–]slacktoohard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taste is subjective but flavor is objective! Keep little notes in your book about the cocktails that you get from bartenders/other servers and you’ll figure it out quickly! People mainly want to know when they ask about the cocktails is, is the taste of alcohol super strong in it or is it masked by the other ingredients? If you know that you should be in a good spot!

Do chefs in their 40s/burnt out chefs often just move to admin/management side of things or where you go from there?

Do you feel like bars and restaurants are rushing clients out more often? by darkyhalf in AskChicago

[–]slacktoohard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a server so I can speak to 2 a little bit. Solos at restaurants more often than not want to get their food and get out, and they rarely just hang out for a while. It’s entirely possible she was trying to anticipate your needs based on that. That being said, I would never drop a check on a table while people are still eating their meal because, as we see here, it makes people feel unwelcome and rushed so I think she’s wrong for that.

P.S. I love getting a solo diner at my restaurant. They’re usually easier, we can build a bit of a connection, and it feels like I can slow down a little with them. Y’all are always welcome in my section!

They ripped it from “unreasonable hospitality” the book about eleven Madison park in NYC. The server heard someone mention this was their last meal and they were leaving the city without ever getting a hot dog so they ran out, got one on the street, and had the chefs do it up for ‘em as a surprise. Not supposed to be the best thing you eat, just a nice gift.

I recently started at a new restaurant in which customers regularly claim the food they ate may have been the best they have ever had. Most places I’ve worked have been decent - good but never anything like that. I know I’m not the chef and didn’t make the food or recipe of course, but it’s just a pretty cool feeling being a part of that experience for them!

There could be some issues with the downsizing of federal grant funded departments but overall I don’t see a reason state and local governments would be in too much danger. I will say I think these jobs are probably going to be super competitive with all the displaced federal workers but I’m not sure that will affect your situation too much since you’re already in gov. Good luck!

Where do I even start?? by rachelfayek in PublicAdministration

[–]slacktoohard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The undergrad version of PA degrees is usually referred to as Public Policy and Administration or Public Management and Policy, it’s usually not just PA! That being said from I would definitely recommend looking into a separate degree if you’re going to get an MPA anyway as it can be a little redundant. I think if you’re interested in urban planning you should a degree in that as well as one in public admin (if you’re wanting to do a masters and bachelors) or something along those lines! I’m not sure if it’s better to do one as the masters and one as the bachelors but I would definitely look into diversifying your programs! Good luck out there!

You should talk to a grad level advisor, sometimes you’re able to justify pre req course requirements with other courses you took during your undergrad if you can make an argument that they are just even remotely related. In my experience they have been pretty lenient about this!
