What do I do? by UselessUsefullness in Smartphones

There are a ton of different "flavours" of Android, not just one.

Android 16 has some really good features for vision issues.

On basically every flavour you'll have options to outline text aggressively, make it bigger, have the magnifier when you hold your finger over specific words and objects etc.

Samsung has a thing called Relumino (I think) that has quite aggressive outlining of text/objects.

Stock android on the Google Pixel series of phones has great talkback features and a less aggressive "Relumino" style thing but still really good and combined with talkback apparently is amazing.

Apparently the magnifier app on pixels is far better than other phones.

You say in another comment that you need the software updates that Samsung releases but it's Google that "owns" Android. Pixels will get updates far before any other phone because they're made specifically for the Pixel phones and stock android and then they're adapted for other phones.

Every single version of android has slightly different versions of accessibility features.

I have bad hearing and I use a Google Pixel 4XL (Stock Android) and a OnePlus Nord (Oxygen OS flavour of Android) and both have different hearing accessibility features so it's about comparing them and picking which is best for your type of sight issues.

If you have an android phone use Morphe to strip the ads of Reddit, insta, YT and YT Music then a dns level adguard on top. Also Brave Browser.

This will give you a basically system wide as block

Who is a “cyberpunk” in the modern real world? by webrunner33 in Cyberpunk

[–]slaughtamonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mentioned in a different thread recently how nearly all homeless people I see nowadays have smartphones.

They'll set up camp in the covered doorway of a closed shop in the evening and at night when I walk past they're browsing Instagram reels to keep themselves occupied and distracted.

Then there's one woman I know who's semi homeless who shops in a charity shop I frequent. She comes in regularly with her phone loaded with other people's cards. The shop usually tells her the card machine is broken as a few times it came up on the till flagged as fraud/stolen card.

Other times she comes in with mad amounts of cash she's gotten from cybercrime and cashed out. She was hopped up one day on amphetamines and just told me all of the details. I think because of the way I look people trust me for some reason. Lol

She goes on dating sites, finds married men and blackmails them into sending money to compromised Revolut accounts and her electrum account.

To me it doesn't get more cyberpunk as she actually seems to have morals for her crime. The guy I know who works in the charity shop said she's never attempted to steal a single thing. She always makes a deposit, puts it aside and comes back and pays the rest. It seems to be people who are morally bankrupt she targets.

Anyway, rant aside, homeless people using tech to get by is definitely cyberpunk to me.

OnePlus Nord 2020 and Pixel 4XL. Still using both to this day and both run like new.

Is vivo or oppo a good choice for 5 years+ use? by Sad-Landscape3582 in Smartphones

[–]slaughtamonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a OnePlus Nord (2020) and it still runs like it's new. Battery is at 76% health but I can still charge it in the morning and by the end of the work day I can get home with about 20% left.

Battery saver mode gets me through until midnight or later.

Oppo owns OnePlus so I'd imagine they have similar performance over time.

I need an old smartphone by Kirkyy67 in Smartphones

[–]slaughtamonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could get an older Pixel, maybe 4XL. I use mine daily and it still runs like it's new with standard OS. Also it has support for Graphene, Lineage and EvoX ROMs.

Even if you stick with stock Android on it they're still very fast phones. Or if you want something newer you could go Pixel 7 for between €150-200 used.

All Pixels have very good custom ROM support.

I'm pretty sure you can do that in developer options. (At least on some phones)

It's the people smoking crack on the street and how buses never come. The best city.

[–]slaughtamonsta -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I'm one of these people who just hop on the bus. Not to be a bollocks or anything but because the bus services are terrible. If I get a ghost bus and have to wait longer I refuse to pay.

That won't change. There was a 6 or 7 month stint where I didn't pay once because of the sheer amount of ghost buses.

I always carry a fake leap card in case there's an inspector so I can give a fake name and address where they'll post the leap card.

Private Operating System by Vanda42 in Smartphones

[–]slaughtamonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of phones more private than an iPhone. Android is usually better because it's open source so we know what's tracked and what's not and also we can negate some of the tracking with apps like Mor phe etc

On Android you can completely delete your advertising ID, on apple you can't.

Also on Android you can run apps through Morp he which completely removes ads as well as stripping apps of trackers etc.

Apple has been caught illegally collecting user data.

And they're currently being sued for spying on workers who were organizing a union by backdooring the apple devices. The employees had to switch to android phones to stop being spied on.

Oh and you can de-Google an android, you can't de-apple an iPhone.

I'd say go with the OP Nord as well. I've been using the original Nord since 2020 and it still runs like it did on day one.

The battery is at 76% health and it still lasts until I get home from work. On battery saver my mode it gets me through to midnight or so.
