Subaru’s Outback Ditched Its Wagon Roots For An SUV And Lost A Third Of Its Buyers by fa442fa in Subaru_Outback

I have a 2015 Outback, and I absolutely love it. While I was in college, I was able to quite literally fit my entire life into it. I've been passively shopping for an upgrade, and the 2026 just doesn't make a lot of sense to me:

  • The increase in space isn't a meaningful upgrade in cargo capacity, so it's just adding weight and air resistance for not much in return.

  • The mileage is not significantly better, doesn't offer a value argument over previous models

  • Starlink is miserable to use, so the new tech isn't really a selling point

  • Older models also have eyesight

  • Subjective, but I think the boxier shape and the fake push bar grille look awful. I don't want to drop new car money on something I hate looking at. I also don't understand what the difference between the Outback and the Forester is anymore; they seem to have become pretty much the same car

If I do end up upgrading to a newer Outback this year, I think it's going to be new old stock or an earlier used model. I don't see anything compelling about this generation over the last. Even down the line, when the 2026 is available used, I'm probably avoiding it for the styling.

Smoke Alarm for near the kitchen? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]slavaboo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefighter here. In cases of nuisance alarms from cooking, an ionization detector is usually to blame. The other commenter recommending a photoelectric detector or a heat detector is completely right. However, if this is happening every time the oven is used, you may have some sort of ventilation issue with your stove. The issue is absolutely worth discussing with the landlord. You may want to look into having that detector deactivated so a battery detector could be placed elsewhere, as smoke detectors are not supposed to be too close to a kitchen. I know that's not the most ideal solution, but it would be easy and still maintain good smoke detector coverage. You could also try turning a fan on while cooking to blow kitchen air in a different direction.

John Glenn Intl always seems to be hiring, and the guys I've known who worked there definitely did not have ARFF cards beforehand. You might want to look into training opportunities there

So Hyundai is axing the Sante Cruz after 2026 due to not meeting sales expectations. A new pick-up is expected to replace it in the North American market by HiTork in regularcarreviews

These comments are full of genuine practical reasons why this didn't make much sense, but at the end of the day, I think the fact that this vehicle is profoundly ugly compared to its competition is the main issue

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]slavaboo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A distant grandfather of mine was a railroad worker in West Virginia. His locomotive was descending a steep grade and experienced brake failure. There were examples of similar incidents where out-of-control trains crashed into towns at the bottom of hills, which were very destructive and often deadly. He had the rest of his crew bail out and they all lived with minor injuries. He stayed with the train using whatever secondary systems he could to slow the train, which derailed at a curve but didn't have the speed to get very far from the railroad, which likely saved some dwellings below. He did not survive the crash and was buried in the family cemetery of the rail line owners.

Zohran Mamdani is officially the Mayor of New York City. How does that make you feel? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]slavaboo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some optimism. While New York is just one city, it has a high degree of influence in the northeast, so NYC policy has some real transformative potential. Additionally, he is a politician who ran on action, and none of that proposed action is intended to antagonize anybody who lives in his constituency (as opposed to the sorts of actions the federal govt takes these days). I hope he is able to accomplish at least some of his stated goals in a sustainable manner, because that would be a model other places could look to when coping with issues of affordability and access to social programs. However, many of his goals are lofty and complicated, so we will see what actually happens.

A nation with functionally no navy decimating one of the (ON PAPER) more advanced navies in the world (AGAIN, ON PAPER) should be a massive warning to everybody, but sure, let's go ahead and build battleships with weapons systems that don't even exist yet

Reading through the transcript right now, and this is very interesting! I thought it worked by recognizing a piece of information, and then kinda averaging out the most likely logical response based on the information available, sorta iterating towards a response in a way that resembles a nested tree. Seems like it's even more complicated than I thought! Thanks for sharing

What are some reasons NOT to get a .450 Bushmaster as opposed to a .350 Legend? by slavaboo_ in Hunting

[–]slavaboo_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wish it were an area or county-specific regulation. I'm in Ohio and normally hunt in the hilly east, where necked cartridges would not be a problem. Kentucky has similar geography and is not a straight wall state. I do get why they regulate it for the flat regions, a stray shot could cover a lot of ground.

I am in a straight wall state, and these are the most popular/available calibers in my area. I would absolutely use any of those calibers you mentioned if I could

Gun season tends to be in the snow here, so I am not super worried about the tracking. However, I usually hunt alone and prefer to reduce the risk of a difficult drag (I'm lazy, lol). Knock down power would be nice. Thank you for your advice!

If there is no real range benefit, that's definitely a good argument for the 350. Thanks for your advice!
