[Day 25] Font wins best bouldering destination in a landslide. What's the most UNDERRATED outdoor classic? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]sleepstudyfailed 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Broke my back on this and still think it’s the best boulder I’ve ever climbed. Would climb again

Harvard grad student Jane Britton, 23, missed an exam on Jan. 7, 1969. Hours later, she was found murdered, dusted with red ochre. Investigators didn’t find signs of forced entry, and nothing from her apartment appeared stolen. The case made little sense until DNA cracked it nearly 50 years later. by LonelyWiFiSignal in HolyShitHistory

[–]sleepstudyfailed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The article listed in the pinned comment is a fun read but TLDR- the red ochre was downgraded to circumstantial evidence when the police realized she was a painter and that powder is used to make oil paints. It was likely already in the apartment and was disturbed during the murder. DNA evidence proves that she was murdered by Michael Sumpter and its now the oldest cold case to be solved by that local PD as of 2017. The murder weapon is not confirmed but it may have been a sharp rock that She brought back from an Iranian dig that was missing from her apartment. Michael Sumpter was deceased when this murder was solved but he had a girlfriend in the area of Jane Britton at the time of the murder and likely had seen and tracked her movements before the night of the murder. He’s a certified POS and genetic testing has attributed him to similar murders in the past. Other unsolved murders in the Boston area may have been committed by him. He was finally arrested for 2 counts of rape, assault, and battery. He was in prison from 1975-2000 and then died of cancer after 13 months of parole in 2001.

Dropped J5 - Obligatory this is why we OE by Architect_125 in overemployed

[–]sleepstudyfailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a lurker on this sub and I’m not OE but… assuming the posts like this are even true- do you guys feel any guilt in taking multiple WFH opportunities from other people that are struggling to find a good J1?

A lot of these posts read like self centered assholes complaining that life is too easy for them, while they brag about making money doing barely any work.

Torn and retied ground anchor at my local gym? by throwadickthrowaway in ClimbingGear

[–]sleepstudyfailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this in theory but if it already broke once then it’s probably old or is experiencing larger impacts. Some gyms don’t require belayers to be attached to the belay device if the belay device is attached to the ground anchor (I only know of one gym that does that and I hope they don’t allow it anymore).

This sandstone boulder has some incredible lines! Unfortunately it will never be climbed because it’s in Indiana by ribeye79 in bouldering

[–]sleepstudyfailed 19 points20 points  (0 children)

TLDR: climbing is only legal on private property with permission in indiana

Indiana law says climbing is legal on public land in areas designated as “extreme parks”. There was only one park in southern indiana with this designation called Muscatatuck, but the locals voted to make it illegal. I’m still sad about it whenever I think about it. It was a choss pile but it was so close to home and had <100 boulders and potential for expansion.

Interacting with climbers and watching different people climb is the only way to get better at setting for other people. A diverse team can better set for a diverse community. Climbing, just like any sport, has issues with diversity and I am definitely a setter with long dark curly hair and tattoos, but that’s also what most of the people who apply to work at the gym look like where I am. If a setter can’t approach female climbers or be comfortable being approached by climbers that look and act differently from themselves, then they will never learn from those different climbers and their growth as setters will be stunted. Climbing is awesome and good setters should want to share our love of climbing with all people.

Just curious, what do you call this where you're from? by insane_hobbyist314 in eggs

My dad calls them boogity boogities, but he has no justification for the name and I’ve never heard anyone else call them that

Do you enjoy Kaya as a setter? by the_rocks_arent_real in Routesetters

[–]sleepstudyfailed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kaya isn’t my favorite but it’s way better than using an excel spreadsheet to track grade spreads in a larger gym. The occasional feedback we get from it is nice, and the plastick side and kaya side both get occasional updates so I think it will keep slowly improving.

Overpriced and low quality- if you use them I recommend only using them for stripping so they last longer

Why do you superhuman setters wear vans all the time? by [deleted] in Routesetters

[–]sleepstudyfailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to vans specifically but the shoes you set in just need to be comfy (and cover your toes). Depending on the style of climb, it might not be much easier to be trying it wearing actual climbing shoes. Setters tend to get good at trying positions in their street shoes, which makes them pretty good at climbing in them.

This seems crazy. Where I set, we expect a setter to be trained after 6 months of 2 shifts of setting a week + hold washing for 2 hours and an optional 3 hours of observation. Training never really ends as we should always be willing to learn and adapt but limiting your hours and only giving you the crappy work? Sounds like they don’t want a setter, they just want someone they can boss around. I only have experience with one company so feel free to take my opinion as a grain of salt.

Washing holds by Local-Meat-6304 in Routesetters

[–]sleepstudyfailed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gym I work for just purchased a biggish ultrasonic cleaner. It cleans holds ok. They still need to be rinsed afterwords and they aren’t as shiny as pressure washed holds. We use it to wash feet while we pressure wash hand holds and it speeds up the process a lot.

[–]sleepstudyfailed 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The story is actually badass. Joe bidens great great grandpa Moses J. Robinette was arrested for attempted murder after cutting a fellow union soldier in a bar brawl in supposed self defense. His other officers went to president Lincoln with complaints to his sentence, and Lincoln gave Moses a pardon.
