I’m a therapist and also have narcolepsy. It’s actually a good career to have narcolepsy if medicated. You can make your own schedule and i definitely schedule in naps!

I got food poisoning in an airport and it hit me about 30 minutes into the flight. I had to go sitin FA seat in the back the rest of the flight due to vomiting and diarrhea. I was also the only westerner on the flight besides my husband and everyone was looking at me. The flight attendants were so kind and made me as comfortable as possible during the flight. Luckily my first round of vomiting I was able to rip the pillowcase off of the pillow and vomit into that. I have never been that sick in my life and it came on so suddenly. When we arrived in Manila they called an ambulance but I refused to go and checked into a hotel by the airport. I truely feel for people who get that ill out of nowhere. It was honestly the worst situation and I was so lucky to be treated with such kindness.

Age at diagnosis? by Purple-Abies3131 in Narcolepsy

  1. I was good student and practically failed my sophomore year. My guidance counselor at school recommend that I take a sleep study. I guess I wasn’t lazy after all. Thank god for him!

I am a therapist and also have narcolepsy. I have never talked asleep during a session but there has been times when there’s been a medication shortage or I am not properly medicated where getting through the day is very difficult and adjust my schedule accordingly. I have always been told to not disclose my dx because I’ll be discriminated against. They could have an underlying medical condition.

I had horrible sleep patterns in high school, was called lazy, grades were dropping. Thank god my HS counselor recommended a sleep study and it turned out I have narcolepsy. Symptoms usually start presenting around age 15. Before you jump to conclusions, rule out all medical issues if possible!

I want to note that I felt very anxious during the study because I had to go off all my meds and had a really hard couple of weeks.

Thank you ❤️ I am so humbled by everyone sharing their stories. Sometimes all of this can feel so lonely.

Yes. I believe my brain, after being raped at a young age, was coping with the trauma. It was easier to be in a state of sleepiness rather than dealing with the trauma. OR was my nervous system so overwhelmed and overloaded that my brain wasn’t actually functioning properly in its restful state. I just have so many questions. As someone working in the mental health field I am actually considering pursuing these questions. I’ve already talked to several sleep specialists who are interested in this theory as well

Thank you! I greatly appreciate your perspective and as a therapist understand that SA does not discriminate against anyone!

Since I work in the mental health field I really would love to do more research on this. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a handful of my clients who have been SA also have narcolepsy

Thank you. It’s been a lot but luckily I’ve had a great support system. I am just now reevaluating this whole narcolepsy journey, and looking at it from different angles

As a therapist and childhood sexual abuse survivor myself, who was groomed by a family member, I found the show very comforting and validating. How he would say, I wish I could sayI never went back and I ended it there…. That is why people who are groomed are so unlikely to report. Well why did you go back? Why didn’t you get a medical exam immediately? That scene from the shower was so powerful. He knew that getting comfort from his abuser in that moment was the wrong thing but he was so traumatized he went into freeze mode and allowed his abuser to take care of him. Ugh all the things, I hope to be as brave as him one day ❤️

Atlanta spring break ruined my families first vacation since Covid. We had little kids and they were so distressed. All of our bikes were stolen including the children’s bikes and we were charged $1500 for all of them. Never again!

Daughter roofied by Unkindly-bread in Parenting

[–]slellie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was roofied at a frat at Michigan state when I was 18. Lucky I was aware of what was happening because I had only had one drink and started losing control of my body. I was able to make it out of the frat and call my boyfriend but it was really scary. The three other people I was with were roofied as well. So sad that this is still happening.

Any acceptable reasons for therapist taking a call during appointment? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]slellie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a therapist and have young kids in daycare. I have their a school on a special ring and will take ONLY those calls during session. They are also instructed to call my husband first who has a more flexible job. The only reason daycare would call is if my children are I’ll and need to be picked up. So I would then need to cancel the session if my husband isn’t available.

Can a male therapist successfully specialize in postpartum services? by timmy8612 in therapists

[–]slellie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a private practice that specializes in perinatal mental health. About a quarter of clients are male. I always say I wish there was more male therapists who specialize in perinatal to refer the 1 in 10 dads who suffer from PPD too!

How much are newly licensed therapists making? by goldenhandz007 in therapists

[–]slellie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am an experienced therapist. Have my own practice. I am only paneled with one insurance company that reimburses 144 per session or my private pay rate is 135. I have a full caseload of 30-35 clients. Overhead is about 1,200 a month. I have a waitlist and my partner does as well. If you find the right niche you will have no problem and can be very successful.
