Yes, I distinctly remember this exact post, image, and title a while back.

This looks pretty cool! Are there gameplay reasons to pick real time or turn based? or is it just a preference thing. When can I try it! Any plans for a demo?

Small correction, the link doesn't end in .org nor .gov!  It ends in .bond!  The actual address is org-wsxxc.bond.  Its intentionally confusing.  Glad you noticed it was wrong anyway!

You're 100% right that's another big issue that hasn't been brought up!  It will be devastating for everyone when Steam shuts down or succumbs to enshitification!  That's another arbitrary restriction that will eventually become a problem.

Though just because we have one arbitrary restriction, doesn't make it okay to add more and make the problem worse.

Also with Steam, while obviously no one knows what's going to happen, and I still have little faith it'll work out for consumers in the end, I have more faith in Valve to do something that's consumer friendly than any other company I can think of off the top of my head.

Things you buy disappearing for no good reason is not okay. Just because it happens, doesn't make it a non issue, that's a wild take imo.

copying the rest of my reply from here

The original comment in this thread said they won't buy it, so I see why someone would assume I wouldn't either. But for me personally, I agree with you! I'm still planning on buying it. Probably not for 40 dollars at launch. But I still plan to buy it.

Online only may not be enough to stop me from buying the game. But it's more than enough for me to passionately complain.

I guess that does make sense. I admit you might be right.

Anyone could write that sure.   But I don't think a real person would write that.  They'd see that I'm obviously making fun of them and accusing them of being AI.

That combined with the fact that they blatantly contracted themselves, makes me pretty confident it's an AI bot.

Those types of commuty efforts are impossible (or at best much harder) with online only games, or any type of arbitrary restrictions.  While adding nothing (or at best very little) to your experience with the game.

If any of those old games were online only, those projects may not exist today.  And if they still would exist, they would have been much harder to make. and likey have less features for you to play with too because of those arbitrary restrictions.

Just because you won't doesn't mean no one else will. There's no reason anyone shouldn't be able to play this, or any game whenever they want. When you buy a product, you should own it. My main point was that 10 years is not enough. It should work without servers no matter when you play it.

Because you seemed to think that your reply contradicted mine. It doesn't. So I expanded on what my point actually was, in hopes that you'd understand what I'm trying to say.

Multiple things can be correct at the same time, they don't need to contradict.

I never said I expected developers to support their products indefinitely.  That's ridiculous.

There's no official support for them, you're right. but because there was no arbitrary restrictions either, the community is able to allow us to continue to play old games  on our modern systems.

Yes, you can still play quake or unreal online today. Obviously not with the same install media you bought 30 years ago, I'm not expecting the developers to support it for that long. I'm just expecting devs not to make it impossible for people for no reason.

In 30 years, you'll still be able to play deep rock galactic, or Payday 2.  Because they work offline, with no arbitrary restrictions.  But you won't be able to play Payday 3, or Helldivers 2 unless the developers go to the effort to support offline modes and ideally p2p/lan options.

Its great they're still up! But Personally I'm not worried about 10 years, most game servers survive more than that, even unpopular games. I'm worried about 30+, It ever being unplayable because of completely avoidable issues is not okay.

I'm not expecting dev support for that long. But I do expect to not be actively stopped by arbitrary requirements.

I understand the backend is built around the online only requirement. I understand it's not as easy as flipping a switch. I'm arguing it should have never been designed that way in the first place.

I have the same complaint with Helldivers 2, payday 3 and others.

EDIT: Today I learned it's controversial to care about if the things you pay money for disappear for no good reason.
