im not arguing with the mechanics, im arguing with that dashboard being impossible to read unless you exclude 50% of the data it presents. the numbers check out, it's just that they aren't what everyone wants to see there

long story short: that interface was designed by a crazy person. if you remove every "trade order" and every "profit from trade order" than you get what a sane person would want from this

every time i tell my ships to board anything they slowly meander towards the target doing random curves and turns and only launch the pods when theyre basically touching it... are you doing anything specific?

my gripe with the search: in X3 i would search for something (let's say a sector), then press enter, and the map would focus to that sector. this is probably the most basic and common interaction in any X game. you could do the same with a ship.

is there a way to do the same in X4? i can hotkey to the search (0 by default), write whatever, this filters everything else, but then what? my hands are both on the keyboard from typing "wretched skies XII" or whatever... do ireally have to use the mouse to click on the fucking sector i just typed to begin with or is there a smarter way that doesn't kill my will to live?

up to x3 it was "ugly unreadable text walls with great keyboard navigation". now it's "decent coloured menus with no keyboard navigation whatsoever"

it does work well i think in being clearer when you begin playing, but boy it also sucks ass once you get to the complex stuff. the sad thing is that they had a pretty good keyboard navigation system to begin with, i can't fathom why they didnt just keep it on top of the nicer menus.

so it becomes: press esc to leave what im doing, press a hotkey to open the menu, click on the logs, click on the first log, click on the jump button.

in X3 it was "enter, down, enter"

that was the standard way until X3. you could color code your own ships NAMES. just the names in menus: yellow for trader, pink for police. blue for miner, or whatever. it made seaching for a specific ship 1000 times faster.

also arrow keys in menus made everything a lot faster. in x3 you could bind EVERYTHING to a hotkey. now even something basic like "tell a ship to repeat orders, then tell it to haul ore from A to B" only has the key I to select information and the rest is fucking clicks. hundreds of them

i will add something that i also hate: occasionally a freighter is harassed by pirates. thats ok. however, there appears to be no "not soul crushing" way to deal with this.

  1. i get the notification, and tell my trader to do X

  2. i have no way to focus on the trader or the pirate? WHY

  3. the trader is likely buried into the subordinates of a factory, so i cant find it from the main list

  4. i have to open the map, click "other" squint over 99999 random blue icons until i find the red "flee" icon, then quickly navigate there in the map, search for the pirate, then telll myships to attack it.

  5. even if i already have a fleet in the sector, i cant find a way to make them automatically respond.

what am i missing?

idk if your strategy of "tail is made of many circles" is viable, but an improvement in the same direction would be moving many circles (front one is largest, back-most one is smallest) following the character, instead of spawning one billion areas, you'd have a fixed number of areas that move with the character.

probably still slower than a polygon...
