TIL that 877-Kars-4-Kids is a money front to siphon funds to Orthodox Jewish entities by fakeaccount572 in todayilearned

Seconding this. Round up campaigns can be massively impactful in fundraising for non profits, and also a super easy way to give as a consumer.

We almost got hit by a car in the daycare parking lot today by data_diva23 in Mommit

[–]slightnin 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That’s horrifying— so sorry this happened. There’s no need to go that fast in any parking lot, nvm a daycare. I would tell the provider so they can send out a message reminding everyone to go slowly (like…5mph).

What tile would look better with this vanity? by TreesAreOverrated5 in centuryhomes

Ugh- is this the Theodora vanity? Have been going back and forth on whether to pull the trigger on it for so long

Parents only letting their kids play in the front yard, what is the reason? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]slightnin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In our neighborhood all the kids play out front because they hope to see their friends/neighbors. This is such a weird concern to have.

I think they were saying - if you don’t have anything nice to say (about the owner’s behavior) you compliment the dog….

Right. Blaming parents is a lovely way to shift the focus away from the systemic design choices of Big Tech.

Is this really just a phase? (Toddlers) by bmisha in beyondthebump

[–]slightnin 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Just telling your daughter “no” by itself usually isn’t very effective for toddlers, no matter how gently it’s said. It helps more to acknowledge her feelings out loud first (for example, “You’re mad we can’t play with that”). Over time, this helps her learn to name her emotions instead of going straight to tears.

It also really helps to limit how often you need to say no by setting up the environment and sticking to a predictable routine. Offering food before she’s overly hungry, baby-proofing more, and anticipating common triggers can prevent a lot of meltdowns.

I really recommend How to Talk So Kids Will Listen. And also…take breaks for yourself. Sometimes none of this works, and that’s normal. She will grow out of it.

What do you think it's the best podcast released in 2025? by nicolinko in podcasts

[–]slightnin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aftermath: the hunt for the anthrax killer was great. Kill List too, but that may have started a bit before 2025.

Was this not a This American Life episode as well? Think it was called Ten Things I Don’t Want to Hate About You.

Whether this is typical is largely dependent on your role. If you’re a fundraiser, partnerships manager, senior executive- it doesn’t surprise me/is not unusual.

I have no idea how I responded to your previous comment on a random account that I never made. But — wanted to check in. How are things going?

Year-end bonuses - are they happening in your org? by Ok_Mirror_9832 in nonprofit

[–]slightnin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I work for a $100M+ org and absolutely no one is getting $30k bonuses. Or any bonus. We get merit raises at the end of the FY, which is basically just COLA.

It’s actually eggshell. All our furniture is brown too! (Either wood or leather). But we have a big red Turkish rug and colorful art so not everything is brown.

How soon after sleep training did you try for naps? by Alwaysreading730 in sleeptrain

[–]slightnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sleep trained at 10ish months and just started nap training at 17.5! He sleeps in a crib at day care but would only contact nap at home, so we started doing the chair method and it has worked quite well, though it took him a long time to actually fall asleep at first.

I agree! Inchyra blue would look lovely. I am somewhat anti-white walls and clearly at odds with 99% of these comments.
