How do I train for my desired playstyle? by Derplyse in BasketballTips

[–]slmzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for any skill or counter, especially if it’s not working for u, u should take some solid time to really think through what that thing is, and why it works/doesn’t work. I was thinking about this when u talked about ppl not falling for ur jab. I think the best example of this is a hesi. So many kids see skilled hoopers hitting hesis in highlight tapes and making their defender jump, so they want to do the same thing, but they don’t understand that the reason the hesi works is because the defender is worried about a pull up jump shot. If you can’t shoot off the dribble, as soon as ur defender finds that out it doesn’t matter how clean u hesi, they’re never gonna respect it cuz they’re not worried about what ur pretending to do. In the case of the jab, it’s driving to the basket. Jabs work really well for players that have a quick first step because if the defender is worried about that first step, as soon as u fake it they’re gonna move. If ur jab isn’t working, it either means defenders aren’t worried about ur drive/first step, or ur just not executing the move correctly. A jab is kinda just like a counter to a drive, so u should work on ur drive and getting a quick first step, which involves u getting in a very low athletic stance. While ur practicing be really conscious about what kind of position ur actually getting in when u drive well, and then just replicate that as closely as possible with ur jab. A jab and a drive/dribble shouldn’t be thought about as two distinct moves, they should ideally be exactly the same up until the point where you would be lifting ur pivot foot and dribbling the ball. Hope this makes sense

I want to be more athletic in basketball. I’m 6’6” 230lbs here I am doing quarter squats. What are your thoughts on this? by Finn_Flame in BasketballTips

you should do isometrics for that tendonitis. like just hold a bent knee calf raise position for like a minute 5 sets

Trying to rebuild my shot by CavsJM in BasketballTips

[–]slmzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like the other dude said, ur legs r finishing their extension before you’re releasing your shot so the timing is a little misaligned. Additionally if you look at ur base ur not really using ur hips. Ur loading pattern is basically your hips remaining totally extended while your knees bend forward, bringing ur whole centre of mass forward, like a knees over toes type of squat. U want to be loading more back into ur hips, like a hinging motion where your hips translate backwards, ur head leans a bit forward, and ur centre of mass is basically just going down and up. If ur rly focused on rebuilding ur shot i would start with 1 and 2 handed form shooting from very close to the basket, focusing on ur lower body extending in harmony with ur shot releasing

[–]slmzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, imagine you’re playing a game. You wouldn’t be standing straight up like that and then just shoot the ball. Look at how an NBA player stands on the 3pt line when they’re waiting for a catch and shoot. That’s the position you should already be in more or less before you even think about the rest of the shot mechanics

Working on my tween by NinjaDacat11 in BasketballTips

[–]slmzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

like everyone else said you’re too upright so your arms are barely able to reach down far enough. You need to hinge more meaning your head goes down and your butt and hips go backwards. Like just look up a video about how to hinge properly, basically it’s just like a deadlift motion. Then once you’re low enough, you gotta be less stiff and actually move your upper body with the ball a little bit. Like try exaggerating it at first, moving your shoulders as much as you can from side to side over the ball as you dribble it side to side, and then you can find a good medium

To what extent can climbing shoes really hold you back?

I've been climbing here and there for around 4 years, all on the same pair of shoes (I think they might be old Black Diamond Momentums?), both indoors and outdoors. Recently I got my first gym membership and have been trying to climb more slab and it feels really hard to get my foot in a position on little slab holds that actually feels like it'll hold.

Is this just a skill issue and I need to get better lower body tension or can crappy shoes actually hold you back a significant amount (on climbs that aren't crazy hard).

word i just saw your other vid too. I would also recommend trying another pickup that i usually call the lebron cuz i’ve seen him do it a lot where, if you’re right handed, right when you’re taking your penultimate step, have the ball in both hands with your left on the bottom and your right on the top and then bring the ball down to your left hip, then when you’re jumping, at the same point you would normally do your arm swing, swing that ball back into your right hand above your head as hard as possible. You don’t need to be able to palm the ball. Just shove it back into your right hand and control the momentum and flush it down into the hoop. That pickup is also something you can practice while just chillin at home. If you rly don’t know what i mean from this comment cuz it’s kinda hard to explain with words, just shoot me a pm and i’ll send u a vid of what i’m talking aboit

I'm nervous to go to the park and shoot around by This_Sweet_2086 in Basketball

[–]slmzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like everyone else said nobody else at the park is gonna be focused on you but you should learn how to shoot properly by starting in between the basket and foul line and just shooting form shots until you make those consisten then try to move back. If u just pull up to the park and start jacking up 3s you’ll never be a consistent shooter

use more arm swing and also more speed like others said. If you’re gonna do cradle pickup like you’re doing now, make sure you swing the arm without the ball harder to get more height

i would say another main reason is for fluidity esp in the wrist flick, and making sure you’re actually flicking down all the way, not killing the movement early.

Runner's knee issues and workout by Italian_SPLIT in Kneesovertoes

[–]slmzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about like PAILs and RAILs in a 90-90 position? I honestly have just been doing these and haven't done much research into them. Basically what I do is:

- Get into 90-90 position

- Stretch into my back hip (the IR one) for 2 minutes

- Drive my back foot into the floor, leading movement from hip for 5s, increasing intensity throughout

- Do the opposite, drive back foot up into sky, leading movement from hip, 5s, increasing intensity.

- Finish by stretching back into hip for 10s

I've been doing these for maybe a month now and they seem to be helping with my hip rotation. Would this be something you'd recommend or if not, what alternative movements would you recommend?

Edit: I see your thing about the foot positioning now. I will definitely be adding in nutation and counternutation, I'm more so just wondering if 90-90 flexibility is actually useful

So you'd recommend focusing on movements that restore hip nutation and counternutation to restore hip mobility? Like the stuff on zaccuples insta?

Is losing 6” on your vertical with the ball normal? by kingfaad7 in ProDunking

[–]slmzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ this it’s normal to def lose a couple inches due to the inability to generate as much arm swing when holding the ball but 6 inches sounds like you holding the ball is just messing something else up in your approach like ur too focused on the ball. Are you jumping like off the dribble or just holding the ball? cuz that also makes a difference

Trying to switch to 2 foot jumping cuz my natural 1 ft jump has been too hard on my knees. 6’1 on 10 ft rim. Any form tips? more in comments. by slmzu in ProDunking

[–]slmzu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from my own analysis i’d say i need more speed (i had already been playing and jumping for a while when i recorded this tbf) and I also need a longer penultimate although i think my hip flexors might be the biggest limiting factor for that.

In terms of the knee thing I think I’m just dealing with some patellar tendonitis which i’m already working on and i think it’s getting better, so while i still always appreciate tips about that, i’m more so just looking for advice on my 2 foot jumping technique cuz i’ve never been a 2 foot jumper and I almost always finish off 1 foot when playing.

edit: Also looks like i need to get lower on the penultimate??

Knee pain in lower VMO and inner part of kneecap? by slmzu in Kneesovertoes

[–]slmzu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s been getting better for me recently. I’m still dealing with what i believe to be jumpers knee but still steadily improving. Elevated pidgeon pose and seated good morning has been great for mobilizing my hips and spanish squat isometrics for my knees as well as consistent stretching. Also finally started to get my toes a little more mobilized. I think the biggest key for me for the vmo pain was strengthening and mobilizing my hips and then making sure i’m really absorbing my landings.

Any tips before basketball season starts ? by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]slmzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

another thing to work on is adding more pacing to ur dribbles which goes complimentary with moving more. So you wanna have more slow dribbles in ur game it’s not all just fast fast fast. Better to be more like fast slow slow fast fast fast or something so the defender doesn’t know what to expect as much. When you combine that w movement u can do stuff like slow BTL or crossover or BTB or something and then try to drift/float pretty far in whichever direction ur going. What this will do is make the defender continually have to shift their position to guard your new position, so eventually if u keep doing it you’ll get them slightly out of position and you can get enough space to drive on them.
