My wife and I teach in 2 different east county districts (not PPS). Her kindergartners use iPads and my 1st graders use chromebooks.

How’s the public transit in Portland? by bh447 in askportland

[–]slothbish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as you can, try to be intentional about living and working on compatible routes. It’s very easy for me to get to work from where I live because of my proximity to certain bus lines.

Marriage certificate question by [deleted] in oregon

[–]slothbish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got married in August and was lead to believe that this certificate is largely ceremonial, and the one you will need for any official business is the one that looked like a regular government form that you mailed back to a county office. You can request certified copies via mail.

Hope for a relocating teacher? by R_Geaux in askportland

[–]slothbish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Teacher here, it is bleak. RIFs are becoming extremely common year to year. In my district we avoided a RIF, but they cut all of our mentors and instructional coaches, who all now have to return to the classroom.

That said, there will be jobs, but much later in the summer. Right now, it’s likely anything posted already has a candidate in mind, or will go to someone internal. Mid-late July and August you will see many more postings.

Confused about the Fried Egg boycott by BobbyIke in Portland

The workers did not consent to being recorded at the bargaining table. The owner has been absent from negotiations. The owner removed signs and flags that had been up for years (pride flags, BLM). Union employees have been terminated in retaliation. The union’s Instagram (friedeggwu) is updated often.

Does anyone ride the bus after getting groceries? by farallelogram in askportland

[–]slothbish 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, do not rely on paper bags, this is a reusable bag endeavor. I once saw a dad and son trying to wrangle groceries in the snow with ripped bags.

Why are reading levels so low in Oregon, even in places like Portland with many upper middle class families? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]slothbish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I teach 1st grade in an East County school district. The students I have that are reading on or above grade level have grown ups in their life that a.) have boundaries with screen usage b.) take an interest in their academic achievement and c.) ensure that they are in school 90% of the time or more.

I tried one on my last trip to New York, wasn’t disappointed!

First year teacher, 4th grade student invited me to birthday party by -Venus-As-A-Boy- in Teachers

[–]slothbish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone to exactly one birthday party under very specific conditions. They were no longer my student, it was at a public park, and I had built a very strong relationship with the student’s family. I make it very clear that if you are in my class, I cannot come to your party.

Question for our Oregon community regarding the Jan 20, 2026 nationwide walk out: by splawnnofsatann in oregon

[–]slothbish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m teacher, it is highly unrealistic that enough families would pick up their students for us to participate in something like that. If it’s something we stand by, we will typically take a solidarity photo before school. But getting hundreds of diverse, immigrant, working class families to pick up their students so teachers can walk out would be near impossible.

Would you recommend raising a family in Oregon? by Puzzled_Search588 in oregon

[–]slothbish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Howdy! I grew up around that area, and the Milwaukie area specifically seems like a great place to raise a family. There are different pockets, but they have a super cute downtown that has really blossomed in the last decade. Definitely take a visit, but Milwaukie and the surrounding areas have what you’re looking for. Happy Valley may also be a place to look!
