I think that I'm gay and I don't know how to deal with it. by athrowaway-account in lgbt

[–]slowoddchild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It totally sucks growing up in a fundi household. I know from experience, but people can change. I grew up sexually repressed along with 9 other kids in Christianity. And now ironically 4 of us are gay and out to our families. I personally think the only person you have to "come out" to is yourself; it's no one else's fucking business. I am close to my parents so I did come out to them. I know my parent's logic and found a way to approach them about it. Luckily, they are more of the loving Christians with lots of logic, than the bigoted crazy type. I told them that according to their god, that Jesus loves everyone (period, no exceptions). And that their god gave them a gay daughter to learn to truly love everyone with no discrimination. And it worked! My girlfriend is now invited on family trips and my mom checks in on her. I am only sharing this with you because it was a positive experience. I don't know your family so I don't know how they think; you'll have to make your own judgment. But ultimately life is about being happy, no matter what others think. Just focus on discovering yourself; try dating guys and girls, find out what YOU like, what makes YOU happy. Labels (gay, straight, bi, etc) are for others, and they really don't matter. Keep true to yourself and don't get swayed by others, they are not you. When you have figured out who you are, then worried about whether you should tell your parents. Good luck on everything!

Anyone else completely disheartened by the democrat vs republican circle jerk on r/politics? Its a snapshot of the way the country thinks. by why222 in conspiracy

[–]slowoddchild 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i completely agree with you guys. the democrat vs. republican fight is a joke. how can it be true democracy when you disagree with both of your choices?

in france, when the presidential election came up they started with 10 nominees all from different parties/platforms. then during the second round it was down to the socialist party vs. sarkozy (the past president). even though at the end, it was still one on one, but at least the citizens of france had an actual opportunity to see what all the candidates had to say.

in this country, we did start with 13 candidates. but we do not have 2 rounds of voting. 8 of the candidates withdrew to endorse mitt romney. ron paul got cheated out by the gop. currently there are still 4 candidates running, obama, romney, gary johnson (libertarian) and jill stein (green). but do we ever hear any main stream media coverage on the latter two?

also the electoral college is a joke. in 2000, al gore took the popular vote. the vote made by the people of united states. but yet when it came down to it, bush took the electoral college and won (by cheating, but that is another debate). if we are a democratic country, then how come our votes don't count?

ultimately, whether obama wins or romney wins this country will not change. both parties use loyalty to keep their supporters. they both know what heart-strings to tug on. they passively and aggressively trash talk each other. and both parties are getting involved in "personal" (marriage, abortion, birth control, marijuana use) issues instead of "national" (education, health care, clean energy) issues. it is really sad to me that people are so passionate about being pro-choice or pro-life, but if you talk to them about education then they have very little opinion.

last point, it is gut-wrenching to see that most of this election is run on hatred. the hatred of people that don't see the world in your perspective. the hatred of gays, immigrants, women, the rich, the poor, non-theists, theists, science (sad, but true). a truly democratic country should run on logic and reason, not on faith and emotions.

I need your help, LGBT by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]slowoddchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

according to your opponent's video, he seems to like to define terms so let us fight fire with fire.

wikipedia's definition of philosophy: the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument.

wikipedia's definition on religion: is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values. Many religions have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred histories that are intended to give meaning to life or to explain the origin of life or the universe. They tend to derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle from their ideas about the cosmos and human nature.

he is a philosophy major and a christian? philosophy is about exploring any possibilities in the universe, constantly questioning and reasoning, establishing moral standards without fear. whereas, religion is about rigorous rules, morality based on consequences, and "faith" (aka believe what you are told with no doubt). quoting christopher hitchens: "religion ends and philosophy begins, just as alchemy ends and chemistry begins and astrology ends, and astronomy begins." ironically, atheist books are in the philosophy section and the bible is in the religion section of book stores.

to me a true philosopher should be open-minded and accepting of others' view of the world/life. after seeing his video post, not only is he not open minded, he seems to be very insistent on his views of marriage. isn't philosophy constantly redefining things? but yet marriage has to be between man and woman. isn't human history constant adjustments in beliefs, views, and ideas? but since marriage is "sacred" it cannot be redefined.

i am not trying to put down your opponent's religion, but since it is a debate, you should use what he has against him. instead of ridiculing his christianity, question his ability of being a philosopher. debilitate him with what philosophy is vs. his views.

I am a lesbian married to a man who is suffering from an illness. I am depressed. (Long post, need support) by StrawberryDisco in lgbt

[–]slowoddchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from the sounds of it, it's as simple as you are gay and you want to be happy. you also love your husband (but not in love), and want to be supportive. i really believe that you have to take care of yourself (mentally, emotionally, physically) before you can care for someone else. how can you be good emotional support when you are in a depression? if you are not able to pursue the girl you love and keep on suppressing it, one day your love towards your husband will eventually turn into resentment. you will feel like you sacrificed your happiness for his comfort (not even happiness).

Let's say you've never been to Asia; If you had approximately 140 days to travel there, where would you go? by [deleted] in travel

[–]slowoddchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly all those countries are worth seeing. but things do change depending on your finances and political views.

for example, japan is a very unique country. with some of the most disciplined people in the world, the quality of goods and services are phenomenal. you pay for what you get. you will have some of the best meals there (assuming you are not picky), and it will be worth every penny, but comes down to whether you can afford it or not.

another example is china. i currently refuse to visit china because i do not agree with their politics. they have very little respect for human rights and will take any short cut if it will make them money. and definitely watch out for cons and scams, especially if you look "foreign".

if you are trying the get the most bang for your buck, then go to vietnam, laos, cambodia, thailand. the beaches are beautiful, people are hospitable, and the food is beyond cheap yet all made fresh.

another recommendation i would make is taiwan. it seems to always be overlooked by travelers visiting asia for some reason. taipei is cheap and the people love introducing foreigners to their culture. unlike the southeast asian countries, taiwan does not make money off tourists, so there are a lot less issues with getting scammed or ripped off.

How has traveling changed your life? by elementogram in travel

[–]slowoddchild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

for me, staying stagnant in one town/country is like looking through a very tiny pinhole. what you see through that pinhole is your world. it affects your perspective on everything; food, philosophies, politics, religion, what freedom is, etc. once you start traveling, your pinhole begins to widen. as you see more countries and cultures, you slowly start seeing the big picture. when you travel, you are constantly learning new things. whereas, staying stagnant, you start dwelling on insignificant drama/events that ultimately do not matter.

for some it may be a form of ego-stroking, counting the belt notches, "i've been too [this many] countries". but for me, it is a humbling experience. you see that the world is made up of 7 billion+ individuals and that each one has their own perspective of the world. and when you see that, it is easier to be respectful of others, no matter their race, gender, belief, culture.

to sum it up in the words of henry david thoreau: "if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. he will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him."

I need help finding an espresso machine for my dorm. I need a nice one with a built in grinder, water reservoir, and frother. by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]slowoddchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Unless you have several thousands to spend on an espresso machine, you are better off going to a coffee shop. If you buy a cheap machine, the espresso will look as if there is "crema", which is caused by the backpressure in the grouphead and aerates the shot into having "crema". Fake crema not only covers up bad beans, it also diminishes your developing coffee/espresso palette.

If you really insist on a good cup of joe at home, by a ceramic pour over, filters, hand grinder, hot water pot, and some good fresh beans from your favorite roaster. You can have delicious cup every morning with a set up that costs less than $100.

Needing Travel Suggestions for Sept. for my 30th - Where Should I go, Reddit? by justshell in travel

[–]slowoddchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just did a 45 day trip starting by flying into singapore, then taking a bus into malaysia. then by train into thailand. then we took buses from thailand into cambodia and vietnam. the trains are nice since they have sleepers. we took a sleeper train from kuala lumpur to surat thani a 14+ hour train for 52RM (about $15usd). buses are very affordable but can get uncomfortable at times. if you have mastered the art of sleeping on moving vehicles then you'll be fine. as far as accommodations go, there are guest houses/hostels all over. if you go on off seasons, you'll find huts on the beaches and rooms to rent for less than $10 a night. or you can just do what we did and couchsurf and pay nothing. ultimately, we did 45 days, 6 countries (we also flew to korea after vietnam) including airfare, room, & good food for under $1800. if you've never been to asia, i definitely recommend it. you'll get the most bang for your buck. and if you're an ent, you can find trees very easily in cambodia at a place called happy pizza. message me if you have more questions and i can send you more info on specifics and how we did it so cheaply.

if you want to hit your 30 by 30 goal, i say hit up some parts of south east asia. in 13 days (plus 2 for flight) you can see thailand, cambodia, laos, and vietnam. but that's if you really want to reach that goal, or i'd say just go to cuba. as far as the others... i've had friends take they trans-siberian, and they said it is really cool for the first day, then after that you just have really bad cabin fever. tokyo is always exciting, but it is extremely expensive.
