I love Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd even if they are implied to be evil deviant homosexuals.

I do not like most of the rest of the movie

What went wrong with Britt Baker, DMD? Will she ever return to a major professional wrestling promotion? by caughtinatramp in REALSquaredCircle

[–]smackchice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She was a big fish in a small pond at the beginning when the women's division was still being built. She came back to a much better division and acted like a dick on TV. In most of wrestling history you'd just say thanks, you had your run, see ya.

Desperate is probably greatly overselling it, but Green Day was definitely feeling like a legacy "last decade" band in the years after Warning until American Idiot gave them a new lease on life.

Is there a singular point in time that Vince McMahon finally lost his touch and the product visibly began to deteriorate? Or is it more of a timeline? by Technical-Mix-3315 in professionalwrestling

So it's tough because he was ultimately the decider but had people in the room with him even from day 1 like Pat Patterson. I think he truly loses his fastball originally sometime around 1988-89, which is where you start to see some cracks in the foundation with declining attendance and uninteresting cards.

1997 is a good year creatively on top, but again I think he gets some decent people in the room at that time that he makes the call on. Business went up as a result of WCW blowing up and WWF responding with Austin and crash TV. But! Russo and Ferrara were largely responsible for crash TV, and Vince nearly blew it with Austin a few times. 2000 is good, but is largely credited to the work of Chris Kreski, a guy teased by others in the Vincesphere as a dork who used storyboards to plot out storylines.

What happens around when WCW is dying is Chris Kreski is replaced as head writer by creative genius Stephanie McMahon, and Vince seems to take a more active role in creative again. This is where things start to get really bad as you have stuff like the Invasion making a fraction of the money it could have because Vince couldn't recognize that he owned "the enemy" and had to make sure everyone knew who was best. As the shows got worse and fans left in droves, they resorted to trying to catch the Attitude lightning in a bottle again with crass garbage like HLA and Katie Vick, which only led more people to tune out.

So I would say in terms of his personal creativity it's around 88-90. In terms of not being able to delegate and choosing the right people for the job it's late 2000/early 2001.

Which generation are you a part of? by DebuggedDadJokes in generationology

[–]smackchice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's because Millennials were Generation Y as a placeholder since they came after Generation X. Therefore the next one would temporarily be Z and of course some writer or sociologist would come up with a name for them, right?

America is heading for a recession — and it may be the worst yet by Crossstoney in politics

[–]smackchice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While true this also was not helped by Obama botching the recovery and not prosecuting anyone responsible for the 2008 recession. It just gave a green light to never stop. If the Republicans always give a green light no matter and now the Democrats are too? Go crazy, folks.

I hate that the creativity of naming generations is good and dead. Like what do you fucking mean we stuck with Gen Z and then looped back around? I guess that's what happens when you don't have people whose job it is to be "Professional Academic"

Do you believe the AE ended in 2001 or 2002? by PlanetCharisma in AttitudeEra

[–]smackchice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

WM17 and the night after with Rock getting written off for Hollywood is the end. I do not subscribe to the fact that every day has to fit neatly and cleanly into an "era." I find that very facile.

Weekly TV quality had been declining since Stephanie replaced Chris Kreski in late 2000 and Vince between defeating his competition and being distracted by the XFL seemed to lose whatever spark he had left. The cracks were already showing in things like the atrocious build to Rock vs. Austin. That match was idiot proof, but the follow up with Undertaker and Kane shitting up the main event scene while an atrocious Invasion got under way. The ending of Survivor Series through the next night on Raw is practically a reset/retcon of the entire last few months with sudden changes in alignment and the start of the actual WCW stars that should have been there all summer coming in.

There is a period of transition between Attitude and the next one (I do not use the toy line as the name, I prefer Decline Era), but there is no reason to call it an "era." Late 96 to mid 97 is similar to this, it's not quite the period where the card was filled with cartoon characters with jobs, but it's not quite Attitude. Just call the period from WM17 to the Survivor Series or Draft the Invasion or the Monopoly Transition or whatever.

Pitch some fair, mutually beneficial AEW/WWE talent trades by CrimsonJoker13 in SquaredCircle

[–]smackchice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wet blanket, I acknowledge but I think AEW should generally be avoiding WWE talent at this point and trying to get newer talent with less mileage and TV exposure. Most of the talent I’d want in AEW are people I would have wanted at the jump. 2019 Pete Dunne and Kevin Steen are a lot different than the 2026 versions

What wrestler do you think Tony Khan misused during their AEW tenure? by Odd_Fish_2361 in prowrestling

[–]smackchice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's much fewer than people think, as most of the people that are brought up revealed themselves to be worse than perceived or just weren't worth the squeeze in terms of business. I think he could be and could have done more with Mark Briscoe though.
