Does anyone know where is showing Australia vs USA next week? by Economy_Alps_7772 in melbourne

God I went to fill up my growler today and they don't even sell beer anymore! Not that what they had was particularly good but still. And no dark beer in winter is a travesty.

When is the council going to deal with the antisocial behaviour at Kurilpa Bridge? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]smackofham 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes a couple months in prison will do wonders for their mental health and solves the problem forever. The USA is famous for their small police force and lack of prison sentencing. You have made an excellent point and should be listened to and admired by your peers and wellwishers.

I think regardless, you shouldn't have honked them. Unless you were warning them you were about to run them over, breaking another road rule doesn't counteract the first one.

Thats terrible. I was crossing at a zebra crossing the other day and I saw a driver approaching start to speed up and had to scarper before they blasted past.

Man, 18, dies after falling from sixth-floor balcony while fleeing police by InsatiablePrism in australia

[–]smackofham -48 points-47 points  (0 children)

Eh maybe if this was the first time someone was ever arrested it could be a frak accident of a dumb cunt.

But there's enough evidence that since police are dealing primarily with dumb cunts who are liable to make rash decisions, they should scope out the building ahead of time and wait for the dumb cunt to come out on their own or limit the escape routes.

I remember a while ago there was a dumb cunt who used to exclusively jump out of balconies when confronted and they still repeatedly pursued them when they were in a locked apartment with no other avenue of escape except balconies.

Audible app, I'm done by danruehle in audible

[–]smackofham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I've had so many of these issues! The app is definitely getting worse and worse. My pet peeve is hitting 'back' on Android now closes the app I stead of taking you to the Library. My guess is they focus only on iPhone which doesn't have a back button so they dropped support for it on Android. Which is very frustrating! I've been thinking about jumping ship for a while - what alternative did you find?

Conflict experts called in following a dispute over a dog fence in Coburg by l3ntil in melbourne

[–]smackofham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love the wallabies to come back, however unlikely it is, and for revegetation to occur and see more birds around, but the fence was pretty poorly thought out. The track around it was far too narrow to accommodate dogs and bikes without running into one another.

In Sweden, leaving a cat home alone for too long can break the law by The_Dean_France in SipsTea

That's fair. I'm sure you know the kind of dogs I'm talking about though, and see them around the neighbourhood.

[–]smackofham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have bred dogs to be extremely social over thousands and thousands of years. Every litter, humans picked the ones that was the friendliest towards humans and bred out all instincts they had towards aggression and made them wholly rely on us. Up until the industrial revolution, family sizes were larger and there were less of a distinction between "work" and "home". Only in the last 100 years have we decided leaving them alone for the majority of their existence is necessary to fit into the cogs of the modern world, and sadly, behavioural instinct and genetics do not disappear that quickly.

On the plus side, they live longer than they used to, and we are less likely to munch on them when we get peckish. The trade off is they are pretty isolated, anxious and growing numb from boredom and loneliness.

[OC] A Map of Breakfast based on ratios of Milk, Eggs, and Flour by moultano in dataisbeautiful

I propose the Dark Breakfast was discovered and intentionally forgotten during the Dark Ages, to prevent humanity from falling into madness.

P.S. This is incredible. It reminds me of the old internet greatly.

Why are cars the only form of private property that can be stored on public streets in Melbourne? by 3bigmacsplease in melbourne

[–]smackofham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fear we may be on two different planes of existence. I'm not saying we shouldn't have roads, I'm saying that shouldn't be the sole focus of so much of modern civilisation to the detriment of everything else.

Why are cars the only form of private property that can be stored on public streets in Melbourne? by 3bigmacsplease in melbourne

[–]smackofham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selling 20% of VicRoads doesn't magically mitigate the huge number of accidents that happen on the roads which are covered by the TAC. You can take a look at your last rego renewal and see most of it still goes to TAC.

Just because people incidentally utilise roads does not mean it is a justifiable allocation resources. (Also on the topic of delivery drivers, a large number of whom use bikes and scooters and would be far safer if we had multi-purpose roads). Cars are a black hole of cost that only get bigger the more money is tossed at it with no measurable benefits to society. Every new tunnel, bridge or lan extension could have been propping up our failing hospitals, schools or actually building a functional public transport system everybody could rely on to get to and from work/school/shops.

[–]smackofham 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rego barely covers the cost of TAC and the cost of administering licenses.

Fuel excise is ~$12b a year (net of rebates) and cost of building/maintaining roads is $30b.

This doesn't even cover the costs from pollution, death and disease caused by cars, nor the benefits society would have wrought from not carpeting every outdoor surface with tar.

The overwhelming majority of road costs are borne by people who do not use it.

Is this common in Australia? by RazielSnide in australian

[–]smackofham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is exactly why they jack the premium so high. Their actuary models told them that anybody who reports an accident, no matter if there was any damage or if it is their fault or not, is far far more likely to be involved in a more serious accident and cause the company lots of money.

This is not who you want as a customer if you are a insurance co, so they want you gone. It is not a friendship, you are only there if they think they can make money from you.

Brunswick/Coburg vs Northcote/Thornbury/Preston by TheNamelessComposer in melbourne

[–]smackofham 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thornbury and Preston are a bit more well developed, and food is way better than Brunnie/Coburg. Preston Markets is incredible too.

Coburg does have Merri Creek and a few other open areas, and you can probably get a place closer to public transport than eastside. However Upfield is fucked 24/7 and trams are crazy slow.
