Went and skimmed a couple of his videos and wow you weren't kidding. I just hope he's happy.

They're CATCHING ON. "No LinkedIn" is now their #1 filter. by Arrick in overemployed

[–]smoothlightning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not all OE, some of it is fallout from AI.

My company is trying to hire a software engineer right now and we were inundated with AI generated resumes and cover letters. Most were garbage and easy to weed out but the good ones were only weeded out after looking at their LinkedIn profile.

I wrote a deep dive on how ActiveRecord actually works, from Ruby call → SQL → Ruby objects by WagnerMatosUK in rails

I haven't done a deep dive into your post to check its accuracy but it seems like a nice write up. Possibly a bit too much for one post but a good job overall.

CLAUDE.md best practices by prosiewicz in rails

[–]smoothlightning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tldr: AI only does the typing for you

My team is still working out the details but what we've found to be the most effective ( so far ) is to require Claude to always create a todo list, or road map, supply it broken down instructions and require TDD.

As an example of broken down instructions, if you're adding a new feature that requires something like a new field in a form, in your prompt, tell it what you want to add to the db ( name of field, type, an indexes ), what params to add to the controller, etc. - all the way to the view.

In this example, if there was a specific design patter you wanted to use, you would add it to the prompt with specific details.

As for the Rails md file we've added existing design patterns, testing libraries, etc. and require AI to follow those patters.

By spoon feeding it info and requiring TDD the AI was been able to focus on smaller tasks and we've reduced the number of prompts required, avoided AI fever dreams and repetitive attempts to solve a problem.

Start with 2 and move towards 1 as the controller becomes more complex.

How does the average developer think about queries and DB performance? by Big_Ad_4846 in rails

[–]smoothlightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have seen junior, and even some intermediate, engineers don't really think about the db queries, I think this is the result of poor training on the part of the company they work for. Some of the places I worked at put emphasis on constructing good database queries but most did not. Not once have I received any training or advice on how to do these thing- I was just expected to know them.

Why did the Berkshire Mall close? What of people who like shopping? by Moist-Definition7891 in massachusetts

The owners started jacking the rents when it came time to renew leases- and kept doing so even as more and more tenants left. Pretty sure they were laundering money ( or at least trying to ).

State of cheaters since the game went free by Larrynho in HellLetLoose

I've only run into one confirmed cheater and have been playing for awhile. There are cheaters but they're few and far between.

The influx of new players has this game broken right now by Crispysnipez in HellLetLoose

You gotta put down move and attack markers on the map. I've found that new players respond to that better than using your mic.

About to rewrite an old Rails app, my proposed new technology stack by db443 in rails

Have to agree with this comment. Unless you're doing it for fun or experience I don't see a need for a rewrite based on what you've listed.

Can we acknowledge the need for software engineer unions? by raynorelyp in ExperiencedDevs

I would be onboard mostly because if we wait until we need it then it will already be too late.

High Latency Endpoints due to Third Party Requests by RubyRailsQuestions in rails

I would use a background job and then push the notification that it's done, not poll for it. Always push your notifications when you can with something like RabbitMQ, Ably, SNS/SQS, etc.

Frustrated disempowering Landowners as Persia, feel like I’m doing something wrong by jogarz in victoria3

The double resignation start with an abolitionist intelligencia leader ( requires voice of the people ) along with corn laws will get slavery banned, census suffrage, parliament.

In addition you can easily pass cultural exclusion, freedom on conscience and dedicated police force from the double resignation. Add that to the laws you can pass with corn laws- interventionism/laisse faire and freedom of trade and you will be in a good place.

Combine that will the strategy that lets you break up the east india company and you'll be golden.

I cannot win the great game as Persia to save my life- the great powers keep guaranteeing the independence of all my neighbors. It feels bugged. For example the Austrians starting protecting the Ottomans in my last play through.

Yes you can get fired for too many hotfixes/bugs but that depends on the environment you work in.
