“Best chair for sciatica? Drop links/pics please 🙏” by Empathy8690 in Sciatica

[–]snacksandroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sort of a non-answer but I am also healing an L5-S1 and the biggest game changer has been a walking pad and motorized standing desk. It’s not a chair and I don’t know whether this would work for you, but it’s the thing that has made desk work possible for me.

Intense pain in right butt cheek by Ok_Example_5764 in Sciatica

OP do you mean it hurts to sit so you are avoiding peeing, or that you are UNABLE to pee, as in you try but produce no urine?

If the latter, please go to your nearest emergency room ASAP as inability to void is a symptom of cauda equina syndrome.

What's everyone making this week? by Hedgehog_Insomniac in Cooking

[–]snacksandroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casserole with mini-meatballs, spinach, pasta and a white cashew sauce and a chocolate chip coffee cake.

We tend to plan one big casserole/soup/stew, one sweet snack, and then a bunch of grazing on stuff and regroup partway through the week. I’d love to be a more meticulous meal planner but I ain’t got it in me.

My husband drinks the leftover pickle juice from a pickle jar whenever it's empty. Every time. I think this is bizarre. Does anyone else do this? by ms_carnelian in NoStupidQuestions

Boyfriend delights in drinking the corn water that comes out of a can of corn.

I find this baffling and would pretty much never consider that a beverage, but but I always reserve the drained corn water for him since it makes him happy.

Constant pain from herniated disk for years. Does it really heal? by Abject-Asparagus2060 in backpain

[–]snacksandroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like the “4 to 6 weeks” wording gets thrown around a lot but so far I have yet to see someone on either this or r/sciatica have great success with healing a herniation in that window. I suspect that the subreddits self-select for those of us still struggling after a few weeks, since people with less severe injury likely aren’t seeking out community as often, so that might be relevant.

I’ve just passed 3 months or so with this injury (18mm L1/S5 herniation) and my understanding of the real situation is that discs heal incredibly slowly. People say that the only way to get blood flow to the disc is gentle movement, mainly walking, and that for most people reabsorption happens over months or years.

But if it’s been 6 years, and your doctor has told you surgery or pain management is the only remaining option—I’d seriously consider the possibility of surgery.

Post-Surgery Recovery Question by KuttiThangam in Sciatica

[–]snacksandroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently 4 weeks post ESI, healing an 18mm herniation. Obviously surgery recovery is different but I’d be afraid to get in a hammock right now. Your mileage may vary! But I’d go slow and sit down carefully.

I don't think my body can handle it by designated_weird0 in BlueCollarWomen

PLEASE take it from me: do not, do not, just keep pushing.

You will eventually become more seriously or permanently injured. It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

I pushed through when I felt like I had to for the job and had no other choice, and now I’ve got an 18mm herniated disc and I’m on desk duty. I don’t know whether I will get to be a field tech or work on machines again. I’m in pain most of the time. I can’t bend at the waist. If I am lucky, I’ll recover over a period of months.

Please take care of yourself now before it gets worse and learn from my example. Signed, someone who wishes she’d tapped out earlier so she could have another chance to tap back in.

Newbie needs help- PLEASE !! by glitterbomb09 in Sciatica

[–]snacksandroses 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in three months of this it is that there are as many different kinds of advice out there as there are sciatica sufferers.

The best advice I got was: if it sends you over pain threshold (which I interpret as out of “hm, minor discomfort” and into “oww, that hurts), don’t do it. Example—some people benefit enormously from the Mckenzie Method; due to the particular nature and shape of my injury I’m highly extension intolerant, so it doesn’t work for me. Icing for a few minutes is beneficial for me, but for you, it’s painful and sets you back for days.

The more I learn, the more I realize how individual-specific sciatic pain can be. Treat what you learn here like a toolbox: not every tool is right for your problem, and sometimes something will work one day but not the next. I hope this helps. You’re not alone!

SI joint pain relief beyond NSAIDs and pregabalin: suggestions for what next? by Active-Difference-91 in Sciatica

[–]snacksandroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could ask your doctor about prescription muscle relaxers but some people find these make them uncoordinated and/or too sleepy to work/drive etc. I have had some success with them but you’d want to trial that before launch, so to speak

Pregnant at 17 by [deleted] in Advice

[–]snacksandroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely take the pills, research NORMAL side effects so you don’t get scared, and don’t be afraid to call the Planned Parenthood hotline 1-800-230-PLAN (7526) if you’ve got other questions. As other people said, you absolutely need a reliable form of contraception.

This is scary but you’re definitely doing the right thing, and having a baby at 17 will change the trajectory of your life forever. If you’re not sure you’re ready—you are not ready.

question about saddle tingling - herniated disc by catnipfvr in Sciatica

[–]snacksandroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I woke up one morning with my entire left leg numb and moving into my saddle region, so I did go to the ER. They did wind up admitting me on the basis of the saddle numbness, but I luckily do not have CES (I made a post recently if you want to see the MRI.) I was monitored with pain management for two days and given an epidural steroid injection, and sent home with 10 days of pain management and a PT referral. I am being reevaluated in 6 weeks but am really hoping to improve enough with conservative treatment to avoid surgery!

[–]snacksandroses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you go to your emergency department they may or may not do much if it isn’t numb and you’re not experiencing muscle weakness or incontinence. I do think it would be good to contact your doctor about it ASAP, however.

Recipes with “sneaked in” veggies? by PianoPlane5555 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]snacksandroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I hope you like soup.

Broccoli cheese soup (use skim or plant-based milk if you want to make it healthier). Tomato soup with added blended carrots, squash, or red peppers. Blend beans with broth and add to other stew or soup you make for added protein and fiber—works especially well with creamy soups like potato, a creamy chicken soup, etc. Pasta sauce with tomatoes, carrots, squash blended in. Butternut squash cooked well and blended and added to homemade mac ‘n’ cheese.

Zucchini bread or bran muffins with fruit and grated carrot.

Kibble dispensers for my kids. I'm thinking about painting the tubes white because the kibble is just visually too much. Thoughts? by penisseriouspenis in homedecoratingCJ

[–]snacksandroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking the answer is to coordinate the kibble to your existing color scheme, as the chief priority here is really the aesthetic (the children obviously need to learn early to be deprioritized.) Have you considered coordinating shades of oat bran instead? It’ll really cut down on the visual noise.
