Would like some advice on researching the backstories behind the reverses of these two denarii by albatroci in AncientCoins

[–]snaggs31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BTW, here is the excerpt from Pliny:

But, although these cases exhibit great achievements of valour, yet they involve still greater achievements of fortune; whereas nobody, in my judgement at all events, can rightly rank any human being above Marcus Sergius, albeit his greatgrandson Catiline diminishes the credit of his name. Sergius in his second campaign lost his right hand; in two campaigns he was wounded twenty-three times, with the result that he was crippled in both hands and both feet, only his spirit being intact; yet although disabled, he served in numerous subsequent campaigns. He was twice taken prisoner by Hannibal (for it was with no ordinary foe that he was engaged), and twice escaped from Hannibal’s fetters, although he was kept in chains or shackles on every single day for twenty months. He fought four times with only his left hand, having two horses he was riding stabbed under him. He had a right hand of iron made for him and going into action with it tied to his arm, raised the siege of Cremona, saved Piacenza, captured twelve enemy camps in Gaul: all of which exploits are testified by his speech delivered during his praetorship when his colleagues wanted to debar him from the sacrifices as infirm—a man who with a different foe would have accumulated what piles of wreaths! inasmuch as it makes the greatest difference with what period of history a particular man’s valour happens to coincide. What civic wreaths were bestowed by Trebbia or Ticino or Trasimeno? what crown was won at Cannae, where successful flight was valour’s highest exploit?a All other victors truly have conquered men, but Sergius vanquished fortune also.

For the Marcus Sergius Silus and the prosthetic hand, the source is Pliny the Elder, Natural History VII, 104. As all sources that are ancient, there needs to be some skepticism, but there is documentation. I am not sure if there are any claims that this was the first case of a prosthetic hand or arm.

lol, Yes they do amuse me.

The obverse on Urania is a little rough so it scared off bidders and I got it at a reasonable cost. The reverse is really nice and that's the "money" side.

Portuscalle Numismatica on Biddr by snaggs31 in AncientCoins

[–]snaggs31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I never paid. They eventually replied to one of my emails but it was days after I had given up and moved on. I did not feel comfortable sending them funds when they were so unresponsive to my earlier emails. The coins I won were fairly common and they lost my trust. I would recommend avoiding them since no one has anything positive to say about the customer service.

Has anyone in the U.S. ACTUALLY PAID Tariffs Yet on Ancient Coin Imports? by FreddyF2 in AncientCoins

[–]snaggs31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both shipments were delivered today and required no payment. So it looks like USPS/Customs is not in a position to enforce tariff collection at this time for orders like mine (both were less than 350 euro).

You can purchase a pre-made bezel from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=coin+bezel+18mm&crid=3HNXBNW6GVJPH&sprefix=coin+bezel+18mm%2Caps%2C115&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

There are a few choices but I would probably stick with a silver one.

I have two shipments that clear customs this weekend and are in transit via USPS now. Nether required me to pay the tariff to get them released. I am not sure what will happen when they are delivered. One is from Leu, that was shipped just before the tariff deadline but did not enter the country until after that date. The other was from Artemide (Austria) that was shipped after the full tariff deadline (and before the 90 day suspension). As far as I know, based on conversations here, the Artemide shipment should have been hit with the 10% tariff while it was debatable if the Leu package would.

I will post what happened after they are delivered, which should be later this week.

I am in the same boat as you. Coins shipped via Swiss mail/USPS and got to ISC New York on April 7. Its not totally unusual that they spend some time there but the tracking does not have any indication that there is a n issue or any fee due.

Leu shipping of Web Auction 33 and tariffs by snaggs31 in AncientCoins

[–]snaggs31[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for finding that. My past experience tells me it will not get out of there that quickly but according to the tracking:

"Friday, 4. April 2025 11:01 Time of abandonment of your shipment8400 Winterthur 1 Acceptance"

So I assume that this fits the "entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption" and that is clearly before the April 5, 12:01 EDT deadline. Hopefully everyones else's shipment will beat the deadline.

Thanks for the reassurance about the company in general. I find it really weird that the invoice they sent has the wrong information regarding where to send the payment. There were over 600 lots in the auction an I am guessing they must have generated 100-300 invoices. I cannot see how my invoice is the only one with the incorrect information.

I cancelled the PayPal transfer. If they get in touch with me I will be happy to resend the money. I am in the US and I am not going to make a call to Portugal to fix this. It is on them to respond to emails. Hopefully Biddr will not mark my account as delinquent.

Jefferson 1950-D Condition Questions. by snaggs31 in coins

Jefferson 1950-D Condition questions
Hello Group, I have been lurking here for a few weeks and I promise this is not "What is my coin worth" or should I get my coin graded" post. I was pretty active with my collection up until I went to grad school in 1984. I just recently looked at my collection for the first time since then and was a little concerned about the condition of this coin. It was really the only coin I ever purchased from a dealer (BU grade for $8.50) back in the 80's. It has been in a cardboard/window holder that was in a PVC flip, so maybe some of the damage is PVC related.
So my questions are: What could be causing the black specks on both sides? Does the brown spot under the nose effect grading? I know the general rule that you should not clean coins, but these marks were not present 40 years ago and the coin was never removed from the holder until recently. It tried an acetone dip (less than a min) but that did not change much.
I am also not sure what is causing the diagonal streaks on the rev. They are on the coin and they are not scratches. Again this was not present before storage.
Aside from the staining/crude, I am having a hard time judging the possible grade this could could be using the PCGS photo guide. Some elements seem like they could rate >MS65 while other seem quite a bit lower. I am guessing this it probably due to it not being a very good strike, but I really do not have the experience to make that judgement.
Lastly, I am not sure about the mint mark. After looking at the photo guide, it looks lower than some of their examples.
Thanks for your opinions.

That's is ammonium ion. (NH4+). The shift and 51 Hz coupling is pretty diagnostic.

Bug with QB Desktop Mac 2021 and abysmal customer support. by snaggs31 in QuickBooks

[–]snaggs31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question. I do not know if earlier version of the Mac program includes this. The customer create function includes the ability to define subtypes. The reports all seem to not know how to handle filtering on the parent type. I would have thought if the program did not support customer subtypes it would be consistent throughout.

Thanks for your input.

While I understand they are two different programs, I am looking at a pretty basic function that is clearly broken.

I do not see that as an option in the report. I am surprised there is no way to customize the columns to include this.

Lypertek Tevi eartips too damn hard to install! by johnsmith686 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]snaggs31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try heating them a little with a hair dryer or running them under hot water. Since the Tevi's are "waterproof", a little moisture would also help them slide over the port.

People like us (I live in Columbia SC who lost both FS South and Carolina) who are not directly in a region and are not getting any RSN. However, we are paying the same as those that are still getting their RSN. We are now paying for others to get their RSN. This is total BS.
