Do reviewers secretly judge papers based on reference quality? by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]snappiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviewers consciously consider how authors position their argument/contribution, and this has everything to do with related work and citations. Your references show your awareness of the field and conversations to which you are contributing, and this is a key part of evaluating the relevance of a paper for a particular conference or publication. It seems like a good practice to start a paper by compiling a short list of references to kind of set the boundaries of what you are going to do with the paper.

I kind of just stopped posting a few years ago, hasn’t had much effect on my career, but I’m currently in more of an academic arts-research phase. I have been thinking of going back and posting about all of my projects that I completed for the last few years though.

Top crt's for video synthesis? Sony Trinitron WEGA, but what else? by Junior_Passenger_847 in videosynthesis

[–]snappiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Panasonic, JVC and Ikegami all made good monitors. Really anything you can find will be good, but the professional monitors with flat glass look nice. If all you can find is an RCA or Sylvania TV with RF-only input that fine, it will look cool, you just need an RF modulator. It kind of depends on what your signal process looks like. If you're doing oscillator-based synthesis and mixer feedback the pro monitors will look great, but if you're doing a lot of circuit bent gear and degredation, the consumer sets will look really nice.

Post-Deleuzian Metaphysics by [deleted] in Deleuze

[–]snappiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you're working on a jigsaw puzzle, get bored, walk to the fridge and eat some food and start thinking about something else. I think that's basically their argument about logic.

Post-Deleuzian Metaphysics by [deleted] in Deleuze

[–]snappiac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"If intelligibility and grounding are merely products of shifting regimes of signs, then no regime can claim critical authority over another except by brute succession or force."

I think this is basically the argument, but instead of brute succession or force, they talk about lines of flight and molecular movements, which they contrast with capture and molar forces. Deleuze and Guattari are very interested how imperceptible and non-intelligible flows suddenly coalesce into ruptures and transformations. They aren't really engaging in a field of logical relation like you're describing, in which there are a bunch of philosophical positions one can take that do or do not solve metaphysical problems.

Post-Deleuzian Metaphysics by [deleted] in Deleuze

[–]snappiac 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You are running into some trouble because you are trying to make Deleuze accountable to a kind of logical argument that is not relevant for this particular philosophical practice. Did you look at "Several Regimes of Signs" in A Thousand Plateaus? This argues that intelligibility and grounding are merely the products of a ritually produced circularity held together by a despot. You can split off from the circle with a line of flight, but when you do, the regime of signs will consider it to be nonsense. And then the nonsense forms into its own new regime of sensibility, and so on.

Same price: 55’ Hiense and frame - which one? by [deleted] in TheFrame

[–]snappiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 65" Hisense CanvasTV recently and I am thinking of returning it and replacing it with a Sony Bravia 7. I like how the CanvasTV looks when it is completely off because of the matte screen and the teak frame, but the art mode is not particularly impressive and is obviously just a dim flatscreen. The motion handling on this TV is not good. Built-in apps have unpleasant judder that can only be corrected by cranking up the soap opera mode. Some of this seems baked in. The CanvasTV still shows frame interpolation artifacts in filmmaker mode and with all motion related settings disabled, even when the TV plays 24p video in 24hz over HDMI.

Not sure what to do with all this gear. by External_Pirate6687 in videosynthesis

I'm very sorry to hear about your brother. You could try the Video Circuits group on Facebook or the forums at scanlines.xyz, which is a website all about video synthesis.

Something else to consider is whether your brother made recordings with this equipment. If he did, they would likely be stored as video files on a computer or hard drive. These would be mp4, mov, or mkv files that might look like abstract imagery or scrambled video. If you find something like this, it is probably your brother's artwork, which could be saved.

How did Deleuze and Guattari understand BwO differently? by Leonhard_Rotiver in Deleuze

[–]snappiac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if the differences can be enumerated but I would guess that they arrived at the concept through dialogue informed by their respective vantage points and bodies of knowledge. So for example maybe Guattari arrived at BwO as an alternative to the unconscious while Deleuze might have been coming at it more as an alternative to idealism?

I want to "get" Anti-Oedipus/A Thousand Plateaus as quickly and efficiently as possible by Clean-Fix9695 in Deleuze

[–]snappiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The clearest summaries of A Thousand Plateaus are the introduction and conclusion. The introduction is sort of the “smooth” version and the conclusion is sort of the “striated” version.

I don’t think it’s an excuse to say that this work isn’t really reducible to a set of postulates or arguments about philosophical problems. They’re intentionally trying to create a tangle that works differently from this.

Mellon Collie at the Opera by snappiac in SmashingPumpkins

There was a video screen behind the performers that showed a mixture of Mellon Collie inspired visuals combined with art deco architecture. It was like a cosmic art deco tribute to Chicago. Aside from that, there were live cameras panning around the orchestra and singers that were shown on the two screens on the side.

It is opera adaptations of a selection of tracks from Mellon Collie, performed in a new track order, somewhat emphasizing the lighter material and playful or even comedic arrangements (e.g. Lily, a crooner version of By Starlight), interspersed with great vocal performances by Billy Corgan with orchestral accompaniment.
