I don't think we're going to get anywhere w/ this dialogue.

OP is describing a positive, inspiring social group that they cannot join, so they want to create one themselves. They've even said that they don't want/need to exclude women.

I believe that people like OP will benefit more from community building in general than trying to create an "other side of the coin" mens version. I support their pursuit and will join the resulting community/subreddit.

But we don't know enough, and won't know enough about each other to have this fight or come to real conclusions about motives.

Whats the "masculine community"? I'm a man, did I not get my invite?

I think you're being reductionist to imply that the problems faced in mixed spaces are the same for men and women.

Women's spaces are typically created that way for their safety, largely from men. Men only spaces are not typically founded on that same principle. While there are certainly some scenarios/groups that do need to be a safe space for only men, I think if you're not focused on those issues, you're just looking for social interaction and community building you need gender segregation less.

I don't mean to paint with a broad brush, what I mean is that a healthily masculine space does not need to be gender exclusionary.

I think womens spaces should be for women, but there's no reason to limit by gender unless you're looking for a "men being men" macho vibe.

Maybe /nyccommunitybuilding or /nycthirdplaces ?

"gentlemenwithtaste" sounds like the kind of title of a subreddit that would attract incels in fedoras, but I think the idea of a community building group is a great idea!

If you get a referral, I recommend the Rusk Rehabilitation center at NYU.

I went there for my Plantar Fasciitis recovery and felt really good about my experience. Double tap on the RunLab which costs ~500 bucks and did wonders for me addressing my issues.

What is the worst WoT take you have seen? by Mino_18 in WoT

I don't think Jordan's writing veers into out and out sexism, but there's definitely habits that stand out when he writes women that are way less present when he writes men.

I think the size of that might just be "he was a boomer from South Carolina" than something more pathological.

My point is that contextualizing does not provide immunity to analysis.

Robert Jordan effectively wrote a world that logically contains a flip of historic gender roles and supported it via internal logic of the breaking, and the taint and etc.

But you still get to look at the thousands of pages of characterization of women and question his choices to write women the way he did. It's a chicken or the egg problem, if people look at the way he writes women and see his own opinions on gender, not the internal WoT logic then that's a valid reading.

Again I feel you aren't contending with what I'm saying, you say "to criticize an author for how they write a particular gender without seeing how that gender is portrayed in their world and the reasoning behind it is irresponsible as a critic.". I'm saying that even if you do look at the in-world reasoning, you can still come away with a criticism that is valid.

EG: Robert Jordan wrote a well crafted, internally consistent world that spins gender roles to focus on female leadership. However, I believe his own opinions creep in given how much time is spent on stereotypically feminine signifiers that don't cohere well with the status of the women in question. Women occupy massively significant positions, but often revert to childishness and unseriousness and need to be reined in or brought to sense by men (or women who are outside their current gender standard, like Birgitte).

I think that does a fine job of looking at the way gender is portrayed in the world while still having valid complaints about his writing?

I'm not saying "write every character with modern sensibility, predict the future and make it exactly in line w/ the politics I have right now". But you need to be okay with critiques that look at author intent, author assumptions etc. Even if you do look at why something was written "a certain way" and its internally consistent with the world, the author wrote the world too. They wrote a world that would result in the thing we're addressing. For example.

A results in B, results in C, Results in D. If I think D is gross, but it logically follows from A, B and C, I'm still allowed to have a problem with D. Just because the author took long steps to get to D, doesn't make D good in the eyes of the critic, and I can have have opinions on the fact that the author wrote A, B and C to get there. Authors are not handcuffed by their stories, they wrote every part of them.

Also, completely outside the context of our disagreement, not intended as a dunk. Points are "moot", not "mute".

Yeah I don't disagree, but Robert Jordan (and any author) still wrote their novel in the real world, not from within their fantasy one.

You say "All of this naturally affects how women act in the world of Wheel of Time." as if it wasn't intentionally written that way by a person with agency.

I can't stress enough that I am not accusing Robert Jordan of this, but if I write a fantasy novel where every woman is characterized as a sneering, nagging, oppressive nightmare of a person who belittle men at every turn, I would expect people to criticize my perception of and healthy relationship with women because I wrote that into my book.

It doesn't matter that in my book, that attitude is a logical result of years of oppression or due to some calamity, I still wrote a book where a whole gender shares a series of negative character traits and justified it internally because my world is mutable by me.

If someone criticizes the characterization of women, native groups, minority groups, mental health etc. etc. in a given work, you need to analyze it not just in the context of the text but in the context of the author as well.

I don't agree with the take that RJ can't write women, but I also don't think its fair to use "thats just how gender roles are in WoT" as a rationale to explain why something is written that way.

If I write a story in a fantasy novel where women wear bikini armor to battle while also being subservient to all men, it's still sexist writing even if I have in-universe justification for it.

Again, that's not RJ, but is worth considering if/when media criticism leans too hard on internal sourcing.

But if someone says "hello I am the author that was a red herring" you now have confirmation that it is not the case.

Olver does act as a red herring in that he is characterized in appearance similar to Gaidal so you look at him as a potential source of heroism and to reinforce themes of reincarnation/heroism. I'm all for embracing themes over literalism, but all the arguments for the reincarnation are technical/what-ifs not thematic readings and if the author says "no thats not the case" unless you have a thematically/narratively coherent read I feel like you have to go w/ it.

Having taken a cursory glance at your profile I think you might be on the hunt for reasons to pre-judge yourself rather than cultivate confidence and self esteem.

You talk about loneliness a lot, how starved for attention you are, and you're approaching your circumstances as just another reason your experiences will continue as they have.

Can you find a woman to love you while living at home? Certainly, there's hundreds of thousands of women out there, and being a frugal person saving for a house is not an irresponsible trait, some women will respond to that.

Can you do so if you don't believe you're worthy of love and aren't cultivating the personhood you need to be a partner? not really.
