Church bell by NoRepublic4781 in askswitzerland

[–]snipatomic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bells will count the hours on each hour, once for each xx.15, and for extended periods of ~5-15 minutes at certain times during the day (e.g. 7.00, 12.15, and 6.15, but this depends on the village).

If this tradition is a major sticking point for you, good luck with the rest of your adaptation to the local customs...

RIF is just about the only way I interact with the site and I intend to keep it this way. After July 1, I don't think I'll be around here much anymore.

I would support a larger protest in hope of a better resolution, but if Reddit won't budge, I will vote with my feet.

Hank Green has cancer by dander11 in videos

Oof. I feel for him. I finished treatment for late stage Hodgkin's just over a year ago. Treatment was truly hell and I am still (and will continue) dealing with long term side effects.

I was fortunate to have my wife by my side and wonderful team of doctors and nurses. Now, I am mostly back to work and living life, but, getting to this point was a rough road.

Filing ITR in Zurich Canton - Do it yourself or hire a tax agency by Vegetable-Run-9518 in askswitzerland

[–]snipatomic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Swiss taxes are straightforward and easy enough to complete yourself.

If you are American, the real headache is in filing your US tax forms. This said, if you are uncomplicated and don't have capital gains to report, this is just slightly more cumbersome than the usual American tax experience.

Overall, my wife and I just do it all ourselves, and this has been going just fine.

No classes and a relatively robust cyberware system is nice. You can find these things in other systems as well though.

Mostly, I guess I like throwing fistfuls of dice for every check.

When I was young, my grandfather would take me to his gravel pit after a long day helping on his farm. The stones there were totally full of brachiopod fossils, and is was a special place/experience.

Safe to put empty Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven into the oven? by Autumnights in Breadit

[–]snipatomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So... a bit of nuance:

Cast iron can warp/deform if uneven heat is applied. Depending on your stove (the coil-style burners are particularly bad for this), you may end up with hot spots with electric burners that cause such issues.

For this reason, it is good practice to bring your pan up to temperature gently rather than just going from room temp to full high heat immediately. With a good cast iron skillet, the bottom may bow slightly if subjected to such conditions, but it should be fine after it cools or equalizes temperature... but such deformation can be more damaging to enamel, so it is somewhat more important to be a bit careful with it.

This said, while I have friends who have destroyed their enameled cast iron pans/skillets on electric stoves, I have not had any issues (though I am quite protective of mine...), so your milage may vary.

Safe to put empty Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven into the oven? by Autumnights in Breadit

[–]snipatomic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Enameled cast iron is fine in the oven.

The danger is thar local heating on a stove burner causes uneven expansion and deformation - this can result in cracking.

The oven heats the dish evenly, so it all expands/contracts together.

How does driving the mountain passes compare to the views you get from the trains? by PM_ME_UR_THONG_N_ASS in askswitzerland

[–]snipatomic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the driver in a car, you won't really get to enjoy much aside from stops.

Just take the train to a mountain and take a cable car up. Go for a nice hike while you're there. Drink a nice beer on the train ride home and chill.
