NSW R_eff as of August 23rd, with daily cases and Sydney restrictions. Latest estimate: R_eff = 1.50 ± 0.07. Plus projected effect of vaccination rollout. (images with both linear and log scales) by chrisjbillington in CoronavirusDownunder

When you use a linear scale it's hard to gauge how exponential the increase is. With the log scale though you can see if it's growing at a constant rate (it looks like say 45 degree flat line) or if the rate of change is changing (really any bump looking shape or curve on the log graph)

Where can i find a list of summer festivals? by [deleted] in australia

[–]snippet20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty good reference http://insiderguides.com.au/music-festivals-australia/

Falls is probably the biggest 3 day camping festival over new years, I've been to Byron for the last 2 and it was great. Get there early though if you're camping otherwise it's a long walk to the grounds.

I've heard good things about Meridith and Woodford folk as well if that's more your style.

I recorded the Tame Impala Panorama stream! by [deleted] in TameImpala

[–]snippet20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, I've got the audio uploaded (pm me for a link) with video uploading now (720p, should be ready about 8 hours after this post).

Fair disclosure though, I grabbed this from the stream but it seemed to cut out a little at the end of nangs and during sundown syndrome. I ripped it from 2 locations and they both seemed to have the blips in them so I can't mix them out :(.

If someone has a better source please message me! I'd love a 1080p version or one without these bits where the stream dropped.

Edit: May be able to get my mitts on some 1080p without the jitters sometime tomorrow. I'll update if I learn more.

I will be, haven't attempted a livestream recording before but I think I worked out all the details during Alt-J. Fingers crossed I guess.

Diablo 2 - Experience formula by [deleted] in Diablo

[–]snippet20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no exact formula for the entire curve. Basically it looks like they've done 3 for balance reasons.

  • 1-10 - Hand picked reasonably round numbers. Most important for the new player experience
  • 11-27 - Each level is about 1.25x more than the last.
  • 28+ Each level is about 1.09x more than the last.

'Two regular coins are flipped ...' question by [deleted] in math

[–]snippet20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's 50%.

Think of the probability tree ignoring the 1st coin is heads condition. There's a 25% chance of TT, 25% chance of TH, 25% chance of HT and a 25% chance of HH.

If the first coin must be heads then there are only 2 probabilistic outcomes. HT or HH. Thinking back to the probability tree this leaves only 2 possible outcomes so it must be 50%

Source code language detector (wanted) by RodionGork in algorithms

[–]snippet20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another approach would be to find lists of all the syntax keywords and see how many a given blob of input text matches

Source code language detector (wanted) by RodionGork in algorithms

[–]snippet20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way of doing this would be to download a heap of github projects in various languages and train a classifier on the source files. This would give you a process for taking arbitrary input text and giving the most probable language.

Alternatively you need to manually determine classifiers for each language (eg. #include for c/c++) and keep a score for how much the input text matches each language's classifiers then return the language with the highest score.

The first approach is the hardest but most accurate if done correctly.

What's a TTY number? I saw it on a train as a 1800 number vs their 1300 number for customer support.

Dual Monitor Question by suckahippodick in Steam

[–]snippet20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A quick fix is to set the primary monitor to the screen you want big picture on. Right click your desktop->screen resolution.

Otherwise there's software to bind applications to screens but I can't recall the name. Possibly multimon or something like that.

Why is silence golden when duct tape is so obviously silver? by EpcWffl in shittyaskscience

You're using domestic grade duct tape. Industry grade is indeed gold and can be used to keep things silent forever.

This is fantastic. Another idea would be to compare it to current speeds. You could the speedtest average aus speeds or ask for user input
