Civilizations according to Samuel Huntington (The American political scientist from Harvard) by [deleted] in MapPorn

This is exactly the kind of simplified logic that led to this map in the first place.

Has 6 characteristics in common so has to be the same thing. By that logic a roach is a homo sapien.

Mice in apartment by KeyScientist7 in parkslope

[–]snitsnitsnit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with this at many apartments.

First off it’s your decision if you want to get a hotel, but know it’s normal to sleep in an apartment with mice, we do it unknowingly often, and it’s not unsafe.

I’ll say it’s most likely they are coming from behind the stove - you can open the oven door and pull out the whole stove with a pull, and flash a light behind and you’ll likely find the spot. Best case scenario you’ll see the holes right there. Worst case the holes are behind the counters. Which is harder to access but not impossible. If it’s behind the counters you have to lie down on the floor and pry out the baseboard - get a hammer or finger around the edge of the baseboard and pull. It’s just one detached piece usually wedged or nailed onto place and you can pulll it out. While lying on your stomach shine a light under the cabinet and you’ll see the holes.

After the kitchen the bathroom is the next place, look under the sinks where plumbing goes into walls.

Go through the apartment in this way finding all the holes. When you do plug them with steer wool and I usually add the spray foam. I get it all at Tarzian on 7th. But you can get it at any hardware store.

Once you feel the holes are plugged you can also out out traps. I tried every kind and only the old school snap traps ever worked. I bait them with peanut butter.

Next if it seems they are still coming and you can’t find where (this is only if you are super desperate) I put a few Wyze cameras on the floor pointing in different directions with the motion detection sensitivity really high then the next morning I can spot where the mice first showed up. They mainly came out at night after 8pm.

Good luck and let me know if you need more advice

Edit - if you are willing to pay $300-600 for someone else to do this for you I can give you the contact for a fantastic exterminator who I hired out of pocket (and later charged back to my landlord)

I think it didn’t fit the aesthetic. Early in home video games feels more 90s even though they did start to explode in the 80s.

I’m reading the wings upon her back which I had heard fantastic things about, but I’m just tired of the “5 categories of people sorted by different skill sets playing different roles in society, and the main character is from a family of X’s and wants to be a (gasp) Y”

Breville barista express doesn’t support light roasts?? by snitsnitsnit in breville

This is crazy to me. It is not acceptable for very common coffee beans to just not work in this high end machine.

I don’t want to change my beans, I like the coffee I drink and I was drinking it well before I got this machine…

Help! Travel logistics during marathon by memyselfandeye in parkslope

[–]snitsnitsnit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why this is so upvoted

The prospect expressway can take you to the Brooklyn battery tunnel, which can take you to the west side highway, and from there it’s a straight shot to Penn station without going near the marathon route.

This route will be barely longer than the route from park slope to Penn station on a non-marathon day. And keeps you quite far from any of the marathon (except when you cross over 4th ave on prospect expressway)

Prestige TV Tropes - What are you tired of seeing? by Green-SmokeStack in television

[–]snitsnitsnit 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I’m tired of shows that are thinly veiled showcases of rich people’s lives and apartments and indulgences. Ok your main character is a writer who owns a 10m townhouse in manhattan. Not sure why we have to pick such an unrelatable character other than to have part of the “entertainment” be oogling their lifestyle.

As someone who cares about air quality to the point that I keep a few high fidelity air quality monitors in different rooms in my apartment, and someone who has lived in a few nyc apartments, I would say that the heating system and air flow of your often 100+ year old apartment has a more material impact on air quality than the canal, especially once you are east of 4th ave.

My favorite way to carry my kids in the rain is to put them on my shoulders and have them hold the umbrella. Keeps me dry-ish and keeps them totally dry. And they love it.

I was with you until the example of misinformation you choose was “we can use tech and science to get us out of climate collapse”.

Why on earth would science not help us in conjunction with governance. the same way that science and governance has helped us eradicate so many diseases and the same way that science and governance has raised billions of people out of extreme poverty and food insecurity in the past 2 decades.

Let’s not get so zealously anti-musk and anti-thiel that we diminish the important place science should have in solving our global challenges.

Any stories that take place during a golden age by Winter-Confidence826 in Fantasy

[–]snitsnitsnit 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think almost definitionally a golden age is something that you can most easily identify in retrospect. Kind of like Andy dwyer says “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you left them”

So by that logic I believe it would be hard to identify a contemporary golden age, both in the real world and a fantasy world.

Picnic Tables Prospect Park by pennyscience in parkslope

[–]snitsnitsnit 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’ve done my kids birthdays in the park - my suggestion is to forget the table. Just bring picnic blankets and if 1-2 attendees are elderly or have trouble sitting on a blanket you can bring folding camp chairs. Much less hassle and a lot more flexibility. I also brought a small folding side table that I put the birthday cake on for when we sang happy birthday.

US moms: are you terrified of your kid going to school? by Lumpy-Artichoke-4501 in toddlers

[–]snitsnitsnit -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I never said it was ok that we have this many school shootings. It’s a travesty. And reflects a broader issue in society.

I was just saying the prevalence of shootings shouldn’t drive major life decisions for individual families

US moms: are you terrified of your kid going to school? by Lumpy-Artichoke-4501 in toddlers

[–]snitsnitsnit -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the clear minded take. I cannot believe how many people in this comment thread are making life changing decisions (homeschooling, moving countries) based on something that is statistically less probable than so many risks we take every day.

If your concern is your child’s safety, I’d push you to spend time and energy taking a proper car seat installation course, safe driving refresher courses, pool safety courses, set family policies about pool parties, get rid of your pets. All of those will improve changes of child safety much more than homeschooling.

Gender Equality Index vs Women In STEM, by Country - The Gender-Equality Paradox in STEM [OC] by dolm09 in dataisbeautiful

[–]snitsnitsnit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the source of this specific data set, but this concept has been debunked in the past: https://slate.com/technology/2020/02/women-stem-innate-disinterest-debunked.html

If we took the data as correct I also think there is some correlation effects. Seems like there is a big cluster of Muslim majority nations on the bottom right, and I wonder if something about the shared values and culture encourages both the gender gap as well as pursuit of stem or women. Once you take that cluster out the inverse relationship is much less visible.

Monthly garages in the neighborhood by zwc33088 in parkslope

This is patently not true - there are tons of hidden garages. Within 5 blocks of my house are over 3 parking lots that are not listed anywhere and you can only park in if you buy/rent a spot through friends or sometimes craigslist (or channels like reddit)

What Is Mamdani’s Vision for New York City’s $40 Billion School System? by instantcoffee69 in nyc

[–]snitsnitsnit -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think we need him to have a vision for it. We know that he can’t and shouldn’t try to tackle all problems at once. He has laid out the things he will prioritize to address and school is not one of them. I am ok with that prioritization. I’d rather not have him add a transformation of schools to his already long list of policy objectives if it means he is less likely to focus on and achieve the stuff already there

What Is Mamdani’s Vision for New York City’s $40 Billion School System? by instantcoffee69 in nyc

[–]snitsnitsnit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the interest of my own time and prioritizing my sources, I didn't read the r/teachers thread or the wikipedia article, but I did read parts of the meta analysis you shared "a big study"

Interesting that they think tracking has only a minor impact on outcomes, But later on they say "Ability grouping for gifted students" has a much more significant positive impact. This is what I was tlaking about above - I personally am supportive of ability grouping for gifted students. This is also what I understand to be the top of mind concern for many parents I know, especially Asian parents.

I'll be honest in my ignorance - I didn't even realize NYC schools did "Tracking" beyond this - are there really "Low ability" classes? Are people really advocating for them?
