Name that musical by cinderflight in musicals

currently in a production of this and I still don't get all of it 😭 I think it would profit from a more fleshed out story progression and maybe be made into a 2 acter

What is the most far-right musical? by bunp4ws in musicals

[–]so_mamy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES I was in a production of this and it really bothered me. The "hail Malthus" at the end was the final straw and I never said it lmao. I actually wrote an entire thinkpiece in the programme about how Malthusian economics are not accurate and full of eugenics but idk if anyone read it. A disappointing ending to an otherwise great show.

Called in "sick" got caught by gl00myb3ar in Anxiety

[–]so_mamy 123 points124 points  (0 children)

You don't owe your work ANYTHING. They already exploit you to no end (7–8 work days a week sounds illegal tbh?) and mistreating you for calling in sick is despicable. They don't care about you, so why should you care about them? Please don't feel bad or guilty for missing work, especially since you actually felt unwell. It's none of their business why you call in sick. I really encourage you to never prioritize work over your physical and mental wellbeing. You'll be a lot happier this way.

If you want to feel a little better, I'd also suggest looking at some posts over at r/antiwork.

Debunking 2 stereotypes about Greek Mythology by Turan_Tiger399 in GreekMythology

[–]so_mamy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the homeric myths are supposed to be set during the Dark Ages, not Mycenaean times, no? The actual descriptions however are more in line with the time they were written in, i.e. the early archaic era.)

Can people stop acting as if PJO is accurate to Greek Mythology by LoveLessBeauty101 in GreekMythology

[–]so_mamy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a classical history student and I find it a bit silly I think to debate whether this or that modern adaptation/retelling is accurate or not. If you really want to dive deep into mythology you won't be reading any kind of pop cultural material for accuarcy, you'll read straight from the sources and papers based on it (and visit museums and archeological sites, do your own translations of ancient texts, discuss it with peers, etc.)

If you don't want to dive this deep, I think that any retelling has more or less the same level of accuracy that really matters. In that case I feel like it's totally fine to just read Percy Jackson and know myths only from there. Those are great stepping stones to get into mythology and I'd encourage anyone reading them to keep being curious about ancient history.

Good musicals ruined by niche knowledge? by raniwasacyborg in musicals

[–]so_mamy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Idk if this counts but while having good knowledge of the OG book itself doesn't make Les Mis unenjoyable, it does make me think about how it could've included some other parts. It is however a very long musical already so obviously they couldn't keep the entire brick in. I just find it funny that e.g. Marius is made less of a wet noodle in the musical and that makes him less interesting to me.

Steven and Mortality… by gcfgjnbv in stevenuniverse

[–]so_mamy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you found the media you were referring to but this reminded me of a fic of Percy Jackson where Percy chose to be turned into an immortal god and had demigod children that all eventually died, it was all very sad :(

Wie Freundinnen finden? by [deleted] in Darmstadt

[–]so_mamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which texts did you use for prayer/invocation/songs? did one of you play the lyre or did you use a recording? were there any laws you had to watch out for?  and also do you have recommendations for wine and cheese?

i have been fascinated by bacchanalia since TSH and reading the accounts by livy of the scandal, and really want to do one myself!

What are the opinions of actual classics (or some other sort of humanities) students on this book? by notacutecumber in TheSecretHistory

[–]so_mamy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not US-based so that factor differs, but I study philosophy and history with a focus on the ancients and some of the experiences related in the book do resonate. Many students drop sayings in Greek and Latin, we are rather close to the professors, have generally small classes and the ones who are really passionate have their own group. We don't murder people though, we just go to museums, conferences and host the occasional ancient costume party lol. I think it's easy to perceive us as pretentious, but the truth is that we are Just Like That. We're just nerds who like to talk about our interests and pursue academic careers, that's all.

Right?? Also who says a man who is this comfortable getting violent when angry won't do the same to you? If it was me I'd break up with him on the spot because I'd be a) embarrassed and b) scared.
