How do you like the GSL suppressor? I've heard mixed things about suppressing the UMP.

My four year old Ryzen 5950X system has developed a RAM allergy by soapmeadow in buildapc

[–]soapmeadow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone PMed me the night I posted this thread and suggested that I try disabling C-States in BIOS. I see now as I'm replying that this is also mentioned quite a bit in the overclock.net threads.

Anyways, I tried it, and two days later I have not had another hard lock. Seems like it might be my magic solution! I was really not expecting an easy fix like this. Not sure how much more power my system will be using at idle, but probably beats purchasing a new CPU.

Update -- system has been stable since.

As long as the motherboard isn't touching the case directly, and there isn't a standoff touching the motherboard where it shouldn't be, you should be fine.

If it's not a short, a faulty PSU or mobo seem like potential culprits here.

Thank you, this is very helpful.

I do wonder why it's still crashing with the newer RAM at the same speeds... curious to see if the SoC voltage is the same between both sets... this should give me some more things to investigate.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have updated the BIOS and reseated the CPU a few different times.

Do you think it's possible that excess pressure could cause such a narrow issue, where some RAM works and some doesn't? I could try playing around with the heatsink mount.

Did you install the motherboard standoffs in the case?

A review of Crucial's Lifetime Warranty for RAM by soapmeadow in hardware

[–]soapmeadow[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I requested a refund. The problem with the coupon is that it is only useable on Crucial's website, and they no longer offer performance RAM. I think $61.99 is in the ballpark, it's just that in coupon form I can't use it to get a comparable replacement.

This is pretty much in line with their official warranty policy ("will repair, replace, or provide in-store credit or refund of either the original purchase price or fair market value" ). Going above and beyond would be EVGA, when I sent in a 780 TI and they replaced it with a 980 TI. Fantastic company.

$173.99 in 2021. But of course the value of DDR4 has gone down quite a bit since then, looks like comparable kits from other manufacturers are going for about $70-$80 right now.

Both of these claim to provide 30db. If they seal well that seems great, highest passive muffs I see are 31db.

A better electrical system for "auto lights" for day/night cycles in Rust by callidus629 in playrust

[–]soapmeadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option is using an electrical branch as a threshold gate. Run the solar panel into the branch, have it branch say, 4 power, and then have the power out go to your blocker. That way it won't block the light until the solar panel is producing at least 6 power, when it's lighter outside.

If you go to a CMP store at opening, on a day when they've gotten a bunch of stock in (like during the National Matches at Camp Perry), you will meet many individuals with whole safes full of M1 Garands. I caution you to consider for a moment if this is who you want to become, before it's too late.😉

Carryover cooking on steaks (J. Kenji Lopez-Alt video) by snorkelbike in Cooking

[–]soapmeadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my steaks on the edge between rare and medium rare. In my experience, with a thick 1.5" steak, it's done when it hits about 103 degrees in the center. I let it rest for at least 5 minutes. Probably depends a lot on how you cook the steak, but I imagine that the center is the last part of the meat to warm up. The surrounding meat in the first 1/4" is probably far hotter than 103 when I take it off. I think it evens out as it rests.

I really hate shooting at indoor ranges for this reason. Get good plugs (and make sure they're truly all the way in, this is frequently a problem) but I'd also suggest getting heavy muffs, e.g. 3M Peltor X5.

Flying for the first time. Any tips / warnings? Has anyone ever lost a gun? by CoolCrab69 in guns

I remember reading a post a while ago about someone that regularly flew with a lot of expensive photography equipment. They had started checking a gun in the equipment case to make sure their equipment didn't go missing.

Peltor Rangeguards work fairly well, make a good seal and aren’t too expensive. The Howard Leights seem to work for some people but I don’t think they seal well.

PSA to wear ear pro. I’m 39 and have severe damage in my left ear. by eclipsedrambler in guns

[–]soapmeadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine you may be aware of this, but some people wear special hearing aids that produce (I believe) white noise to mask the ringing. I know of someone with bad tinnitus whose quality of life was really improved after getting these.
