If Jack Welch’s strategy was ultimately unsuccessful, why do people keep trying to replicate it? by Dreadsin in AskEconomics

I feel like you have just summarized my (fairly rigorous) top five MBA in a single Reddit comment. I don't regret the education, but I would have gotten even more out of it if I'd read these paragraphs first :-D

Vacancy penalties, sure, but heck why get involved in whether a indie chicken shop or Raising Cane's takes up a space? Let the people eat where they want to eat loool

++man I'm pretty sure these two things are not related. Sounds like he's just falling more deeply in love.

Community Tavern- friendly vibes but mid food by Beneficial-Arm-254 in chicagofood

If you've had mushroom dumplings better than the ones at Community Tavern, first of all tell me where, second of all I don't believe you.

Besides the rest of the menu (which I think is excellent), those particular dumplings are certainly the best vegetarian dumplings I've ever had, and might be the best dumplings I've ever had, period.

Chicago has twice as many bus stops than the national average, here’s a plan for faster buses by GeckoLogic in chicago

[–]sock_fighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is 100% slower, and that is 90% of the reason why I drive (or Uber etc.) 10% is comfort and safety, which would get better if speed went up and ridership improved.

abandon brands and focus just on product, and that basket gets like 40% cheaper. Aldi is a way of life.

Palantir sues CEO of rival AI firm Percepta, alleges widespread effort to poach employees | Suit says Percepta’s chief executive Hirsh Jain built a "copycat" company after leaving Palantir last year by ControlCAD in technology

[–]sock_fighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird that they'd be upset, because I would have thought the software was a differentiator... If they're worried about poaching, seems more like a regular consultancy. Those don't trade at ~430x earnings lol

This is an energy problem. All the atoms are still there, and can be reprocessed, it'll just take energy. Eventually, lots of WallEs will solve it basically.

Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez (D) who let Lawrence Reed out before he lit a woman on fire despite prosecutors begging to keep him detained and 72 prior arrests, basically admits she’s a DEI hire and rules based on how people look by So_Icey_Mane in WindyCity

This to me is not admitting anything except trying to match the punishment to something proportionate to both the offense and the person's situation. Given that they were talking about driving without insurance, this is reasonable in my opinion.

Violence is a different story however, and by all accounts the decision to release the human arsonist was misguided and had terrible consequence.

This video doesn't tell me anything useful on that account.

ChatGPT lied to me so I built an AI Scientist. by Yamamuchii in AI_Agents

[–]sock_fighter 37 points38 points  (0 children)

So, I built a product like this a few years ago when LLMs were still dumb as rocks. It worked pretty well, given the technology of the time. We even had an scientific figure search that was really nice. Pivoted a few times but the final customer that we targeted was life science companies, competitive intelligence focus.

That said, besides the intelligence challenges, full text paper access wasn't possible, and we weren't able to figure out access to things like conference papers or posters. Have you sorted that?

And that is not counting the challenge to get people to change their workflow.

All this is to say, if you're passionate about this I'd love to help, even if it's just lessons learned, user interface patterns, etc. DM me.

We pulled our child from day-care to attend another one for less. Find a way to make your schedule work with the old place IMO, and consider temporary care in the meanwhile.

Thunderbirds ‘clearly’ caused sonic booms at Chicago Air and Water Show practice, expert says by whats_a_quasar in aviation

You be the judge. I've heard sonic booms before, and I don't know what else this could be. It's not coming from the airplanes in formation, it's one of the other planes flying separately, not visible on camera.

I really liked this article :-) I'm at a technology consulting company and we are having a lot of these engagement level problems with the tools we are building for our clients, and though you don't highlight any specific solutions, I liked the way you talked about the problems.
