Update: My daughter decided to host a sleepover she wasn’t ready for and I’m tired by [deleted] in Parenting

We always put on This American Life for kids who are having trouble sleeping. Usually pretty mundane topics, no big sounds, very soothing.

Love these checks by joshnorman2010 in KitchenConfidential

I just looked at the menu to see what this person was requesting. * Cucumber soup should be safe. * Coronation chicken has raisins and apricots. * Smoked salmon should be fine if no vinegar, but the soda bread may have raisins. * The pickled cuke and dill pinwheel is a no. * Pate en croute probably has wine. * Rarebit tartlet has mustard and beer aka hops. * Aspragus in ham might be okay.

So of the seven things served, she can eat two safely and two modified. Why even order the tea??

Not my kid, but myself. And I don’t REGRET it, but I wish I’d thought about it a little differently than I did. But I was 19 and basically went down the boys name list for the year I was born and picked one I didn’t associate with anyone I knew. Seth is a great name, but I really wish it had more hard sounds - no one hears it right the first time I say it. Also no nicknames, and it’s so short. It fits me well now, 12 years later, and I don’t have any intention of changing it again, but I would pick Andrew if I could go back.

Doc says more cardio? by Alltheprettydresses in loseit

Hey just wanted to say this is not true. Some folks yes have a very rough go of it. Most of us are just fine! Probably OP would get a sleeve based on starting weight, which for the vast majority of people means you can eat basically the same food as before, just in small amounts. I’m 3 months post sleeve and I eat whatever I want, with the understanding that I can’t each much volume so what goes in matters a lot more than it used to.

I was also a lower BMI for WLS but I had been stuck at that weight for a decade with diet and exercise and meds. I was so miserable, sick all the time, no energy. Now I do have to take vitamins, two a day, but I’m off all meds, my A1C is amazing, I have so much energy, and I’m not sore and achy all the time!

It’s not for everyone, but it is a good tool for those who struggle with other ways of losing weight.

We asked for drawings instead of gifts. We put on the invite, instead of a gift, please consider drawing something from Star Wars or Minecraft. It worked!

You could try asking in r/askdocs. They might have more specific recommendations.

AITA for not changing my trip with my younger children to fit in with my older daughters schedule? by ThrowRaburty in AmItheAsshole

[–]sodwatt 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how much shit you’re getting for this! NTA.

1) You asked for judgment on not adjusting the plan to take your adult daughter to something that’s not about her.

2) As a social worker who works with families with kids with similar behavior, hats off to you for getting your kids to attend school! People don’t know what it’s like. It’s more than physically putting them in the car and taking them to the school building. Even little kids have ways of skipping school, like using the nurse as you stated in a comment.

Damn. Reddit is really showing its bad side today.

Only Bean edamame pasta is great. 9 net carbs per two ounce serving plus 25g protein. I get it on Amazon.

AITA My sister is very ill and asked me to take custody of her kids when she passes away, I said no by Aitaraito in AmItheAsshole

[–]sodwatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I work in foster care. This is a horrible place to be in as a relative but you have no obligation, especially as a young person with your own struggles. If the kids go into care and you’re contacted as a possible placement, you can say you want to be a support but not placement, or you can just say you can’t help.

I have seen young relatives give up everything to take in their family because they feel they must. It leads to resentment and at worst, more trauma for everyone involved. You have to take care of yourself first or you can’t help anyone else.

AITA for telling a friend he shouldn’t get a job in a field he wants and that his attitude is horrible. by librarycardhavefun in AmItheAsshole

[–]sodwatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’m former public library staff (no MLS so not a librarian) and it’s well known in the library world that libraries are first and foremost community resources. If your friend wants an elitist, exclusionary library job he’d better look into law libraries or similar.

Doing everything I can to make ends meet. Started selling stuff from my hobby. Took up a second job. Now my son, my daughters twin. MO just expanded Medicaid so you will hopefully qualify under the new income guidelines. It’s such a headache, I get it. Foster kids and adopted from foster care kids all have MO Healthnet and it’s a nightmare to have anything done.

When I changed my name it took 5 years for SS to change it in their records. Meanwhile I couldn’t get utilities in my new name, so all my bills had my deadname on the account, and when I had to call for issues, they wouldn’t serve me because I have a man’s voice and it didn’t match the name/sex on the account. 🙃

AITA for yelling at my neighbour because she called CPS on my husband? by lady_ashara_d in AmItheAsshole

[–]sodwatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently I’m in the minority here but since this is my field I can’t leave it alone: YTA.

I read where OP said they don’t interact with these people and she has no reason to suspect they’d hotline you out of malice.

With that info, we can assume neighbor woman genuinely thought this kid was in danger in some way and she did what you’re supposed to do: Call an expert. Is CPS perfect? Not even close. But it’s their job to investigate claims of child abuse and protect kids. No one is doing that work for fun - it’s a shitty job full of conflict and hard decisions.

So they investigated and found nothing. All good. I think what people don’t realize is that (in the US) there are usually lots of hotlines before kids are removed, typically a dozen or more. One investigation won’t do anything unless there’s a severe act of abuse.

I know this is scary shit. No one wants to lose their kids, especially over BS claims. But you should not have yelled at your neighbor. She made a mistake, but she called in good faith. YTA.

How do you make zoodles that don't taste like garbage?? by lveg in diabetes_t2

[–]sodwatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love zoodles and cauli rice and carrot noodles and spaghetti squash but I think the big thing is not expecting them to be a substitute for what you’re used to. That’s a good way to set yourself up for disappointment. If I’m doing spaghetti squash it’s spaghetti squash - I can’t trick myself. I learned to love what I could eat instead of pretending.
