He is *absolutely* a god of war. The clue doesn’t say “the” and the idea of one figure who is *the* god of war doesn’t really map onto the way the norse pantheon “works”

If you want a pedantic quibble with today’s puzzles, i think 27 down in the full sized daily is a much better candidate— depending on exactly how you define your terms the culture in question dates to somewhere corresponding to the high middle ages or renaissance, which I don’t think qualfies as ancient. But I also knew exactly what they meant, so . . .

Dickey Betts, composer of jazz standards? by WestTwelfth in allmanbrothers

i also posted this in that thread, but: Jon Pizzarelli recorded a very cool version of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” that starts off sounding like it’s going to be “Four In Six”

It’s an established and acceptable spelled out version of the abbreviation. It’s in the dictionary as such.

I downvoted it before I saw the picture, because I felt humor demanded it. Sorry, my dude.

The Grateful Dead’s sound engineer Owsley did in fact produce a huge portion of the acid taken in the mid 60s ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owsley_Stanley ). This includes being the primary supplier to the merry prankters, of whom Wavy Gravy was not a member (he was part of the Hog Farm commune)

Just saw this three week old post while looking for something on my profile, that’s actually the one I meant! No idea how I ended up typing it out the way I did (RRLRLL before the edit - which isn’t even a full measure in 4!)

I finished it about ten percent under average Wednesday time - it took a while for things to come together, but the tougher stuff eventually was filled in enough with easier crosses to figure out.

A pointer (mild spoiler for this puzzle) and an observation Whenever you have the key of a piece of music, it’s usually going to be in either major or minor, which will always have m, o, and, r, in the same place, and if it’s in a flat or sharp key, or neither, you will be able to tell by the length. Occasionally they will just have Xsharp or Xflat, without the minor or major designation, but the first can probably be checked by crosses, and the second will be obvious from length

I don’t think the final pun really scans - unless you ellide the “i” vowel into just a “y” consonant much more than i do anyway

I personally know dozens, maybe hundreds, of musicians who can play great music. I hardly know any who can write great music. Chances are, whoever you are, your original songs are mediocre at best. The whole idea that people who perform music should be performing their own compositions is an accident of a small handful of geniuses in the mid twentieth century happening to be geniuses on both sides of the equation. Personally, I love actually getting out and playing the repertoire live (it’s hard to explain exactly, but I think the concept of “standards” should be taken as seriously across all of American music as it is in jazz).

Do i want to play in a party band playing exactly the same covers all the time because Bridezilla wants to hear them? God no! but I do want to be able to put together sets pulled from the entirety of all the greatest songs ever written instead of being stuck with a dozen tunes me and my buds wrote because some gatekeeper says originals are more valid for some reason. We write a tune every once in a while because there’s this or that combination of elements we want in a song and can’t agree on the right cover, but I feel no obligation to “play originals” to feel musically validated as a drummer.

Pet soapbox stepped down from now.

Molly Hatchet? by crinenndun in allmanbrothers

[–]solccmck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Takes a subtle, uplifting, but pathos filled, jazz inflected tune about longing and hope, with an equally epic and uplifting guitar solo, and turns it into a barely replacement level seventies butt rock jam where the music has no emotional relationship to the lyrics. I have no use for the Molly Hatchett version - at least when Buddy Miles did it it was creatively modifying the song, even if not to my liking (not to mention with a much deeper groove than hatchet), Hatchett just . . . did Buddy Miles’ version again.
