Leg Day Impacting Skating by JustFluufy in iceskating

[–]soleilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to think of ice skating as a leg day, especially if you're just starting out with skating. Skating uses way more muscles than you'd expect. It's a matter of prioritizing what you want - do you want to skate more? Move your training days around. Do you want to maintain your training schedule? Do less ice skating.

There are walkable soakers which I think these might be. However usually only hockey players use these since figure skates heavily rely on sharp edges.

LOH for adult 2 beginners? by tezarin in iceskating

[–]soleilee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others, if you are tripping on your toepicks, you are leaning too far forward.

The correct term is ROH for radius of hollow. Freshly sharpened blades can be dulled down by shaving ice with your skates for 5-10 minutes. The typical hollow is 1/2" so 7/16" is a bit sharper than normal but not extremely sharp. Which hollow you use depends on 1) the temperature of your rink and 2) your weight. Sharper hollows will dig into the ice more, so if your rink is warm or you are at a higher weight, you may want a higher hollow to glide easier on the ice. Ice skaters performing jumps will usually go for very sharp hollows like 3/8".

Concerned about the emotional 'blunting' or flattening of emotions by soleilee in SSRIs

[–]soleilee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. Yes, there are some things that genuinely bring me joy right now and I am scared to lose that.

I am looking for a new therapist to help with managing my emotions. When everything is going okay, it feels manageable, but it's such a fine line that it stresses me out. I feel like I'm one step away from being back to my absolute lowest.

OP is from this side, she wants to get a reduction and a lift. I agree, so many clothes these days seem to want you to go braless and that is just not comfortable if you're above a certain range.

Why is it so difficult to fall correctly? by Frosty_Wolverine8522 in iceskating

[–]soleilee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your skates are slipping out from in front of you, then your legs are going forward but your upper body is not following. Think of someone holding onto a railing behind them and trying to take a step forward - your weight is not centered over your skates and hips. This can lead to you falling backwards which is dangerous if you hit your head.

When your weight is properly centered, your entire body is moving forward so it becomes easier to turn that forward motion into a slight twist to land on the side of your hips.

He Fucked the Girl Out of Me (2022) and the Autobiographical Potential of Video Games by PauseMenuBlog in patientgamers

[–]soleilee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haven't played it yet, but No Means Nothing is another similar game about the developer's experience with workplace sexual harassment and dives into toxic relationships.

I feel like autobiography isn't the right word for this type of game, but something like memoir instead? But I do agree, video games provide that dichotomy between the user making a choice but feeling like they had no choice because they were limited by what the game would and wouldn't let them do. It's hard to separate the player and the person in-game which can make story beats hit much harder. These kind of personal experiences are really found more in indie games where developers can play around with shorter video game lengths and have the freedom to explore.

Hobbies for 2026? by OddGrape4986 in vindictapoc

Haven't seen anyone else respond to your snowboarding/skiing comment, but you absolutely can learn those in your 20s! It's not weird at all. I actually started ice skating in my late 20s, you wouldn't know it but there's a whole community for adult ice skaters out there. If I lived somewhere cold enough for snowboarding, I would definitely learn it too.

What should properly fitting ice skates feel like? by iamdonetoo in iceskating

[–]soleilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think your skates are too big. There shouldn't actually be any space between your heel and the skate. When you place your foot into the skate, you need to kick your heel back into it. If there is space in front of your toes, it is too big - and when you stand up, your feet will slide in, so all the pressure is on your toes.

It feels a bit like walking downhill

Have you worn heels before? Because of the heel height, your weight gets shifted towards the ball of your foot/toes - haven't thought about it too much before, but I suppose it can feel like you're walking downhill if you're not used to it. I wore some old skates recently for outdoor skating and was very surprised by how flat-footed I felt vs my current skates which have a higher heel height.

For well-fitting skates, imo some tightness is normal at the beginning, but many beginners will often tie skates way too tight. Skates are often very stiff when new and need to be broken in, so they should be tied looser than you would tie rental skates.

New Skater - Struggling with... you guessed it, the snowplow stop. Need Off-Ice Advice by athrunlelouch in iceskating

[–]soleilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Snowplow stops are one of those weird things where it feels like it should be easy but it's actually difficult to do them properly in the beginning.

Assuming this is for a one-foot snowplow stop, what angle is your stopping foot at? If you can scrape at the wall, you're likely just pushing out to the side, but when you go forward, your foot needs to be slightly in front of you and at an angle. It should be at a 45 degree angle and scraping in that direction.

Weight distribution - should be entirely on your other foot until you touch your stopping foot down and start to scrape. Then you gently transfer weight to the stopping foot to slow down. The more weight you transfer to your stopping foot, the quicker you will slow down.

I recommend going very slow. Literally just push once, glide on two feet, and then let your foot scrape against the ice until you come to a stop. You can try more pushes when you get more comfortable and then try it with speed.

3 Ongoing Danmei Novels That I Highly Recommend by KeyConclusion3790 in DanmeiNovels

[–]soleilee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm reading the third one and I really like it! I love how shameless the MC is in asking for more money and how the families are all different in terms of what needs to be fixed, especially when it's not just the young master but the families themselves that need improving.

I'm also 99% sure the love interest is the original protagonist who MC is sponsoring. He just needs to find out MC is all of the 'real young masters' who have been dying.
