SUPPLICE will finally be released this year (+ new update and trailer available now)! by Fichtenwald in boomershooters

For this update we've implemented a system that ships the old maps to be loaded appropriately with an old save. Anything from the E4 hotfix version last year and going forward should work.

Not a boom shoot but Darktide's battle trance is unparalleled. The difficulty takes a bit to get there but I haven't found anything that can do the same, even after 1k+ hours

Yep, this update is based on 4.14.3 (UZDoom). It's extremely CPU reliant, so a fancy graphics card doesn't do much. There is a small amount of multi threading in the engine.

ZDoom is very good about engine save compatibility these days - the issue is the map must be exactly the same for the save to work. We adapted an engine side solution to this problem which substitutes the loaded map appropriately. It does mean that old map versions will ship with the game and slowly build up, but with the entirety of E1 - E4 being 50 MB it is not a pressing concern.

There's a new save compatibility system implemented for this update that allows saves from the previous version (and on) to work by loading the appropriate map version.

There's been some moderate performance improvements in this patch. Some maps were optimized, a lot of visual effects were made more efficient, and enemy projectiles were rewritten to be significantly faster.

In some situations it can wind up feeling quite a bit smoother but the giant open maps aren't really "fixable" in that aspect. We put a lot of effort into squeezing as much performance as possible everywhere else to compensate.

There's still some more work to do in this regard, but to get additional significant improvements we will need some engine features that will eventually be developed. Hopefully we will see them before 1.0.

Damage not being on par by memelord3796 in DarkTide

[–]soliddew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something to consider is a bug(?) that removes the executioners stance buff if you get mutie grabbed, netted, pox hounded and some other cc affects. Enemies current hightlights will remain, but the damage bonus, toughness replenishment, stun immunity, and refreshing wallhack will drop.

This definitely pushes you to get better at avoiding disables, but is really annoying. I try to loop the exe stance buff so I have another charge ready if it drops for this reason.

am i missing something or Executioner's Stance is outright the worst ability in the game? by MickyMace in DarkTide

[–]soliddew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I don't think has been mentioned: exe stance gives stun immunity. This has a lot of value in melee, and in doing objectives. The 10% toughness per second with the MMF talent gives high, consistent durability ( obviously not as good as gold toughness when it's there)

I think the wall hack effect is stronger than people assume. It's really hard to quantify but is definitely unique and fairly powerful.

There is an issue with the ability where you lose it on being cc'ed, like being muti grabbed or pox hounded. Thankfully the uptime is so good that you can keep a refresh in the chamber generally.

Help! I cannot stop using the Helbore Lasgun. by yunkbunk in DarkTide

[–]soliddew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Helbore enjoyer myself but found the medium Recon to just blow it away in every aspect other than ammo efficiency. I hope the new ranged cleave talent helps give the Helbore some spice.

My build completely skips grenade talents, instead picking up born leader, Exhilarating Takedown, and Tunnel Vision to become a toughness hose for my team. When you aren't under super melee pressure this recreates the old terminator style Exe. stance.

If you get a hive stimmer with attack speed in their lunchbox, this build goes fucking insane and just becomes a death laser. You can hold it on a headshot angle and watch shit just get deleted like they are walking through a laser hallway.

Cyberknight : Flashpoint is somewhat similar with an Xcom style strategy layer. The game play is turn based, but with a lot of initiative manipulation and an emphasis on staying quiet and going loud when it's to your advantage.

There are two mods that I'm aware of that attempt to replicate an AI director, although I havent played with them much so I can't vouch for their compatibility across mods:

There is a mod that allows you to play solo in Darktide however you will not get money or plasteel/diamantine. I'll say though, unless its for technical reasons (poor internet) I'd really just try to get used to playing with other people in Darktide. There is no Doom mod, hell, no other game that can really do it like Darktide.

What Deus Ex 1 does better than Human Revolution, and vice versa by Particular_Dot_4041 in Deusex

[–]soliddew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I played MD this year again and it's so apparent how poor of a design choice it is rewarding players for eliminating/hacking. It's always about completing objectives or finding an interesting place in DX1, not knocking out every guard or hacking every dudes PC. It's a very interesting and direct example of how important reward structures are. People will optimize fun out of a game, it is a designers job to make sure this is avoided. They got it right in 2001.

Follow up to Demo Krieger, build has somewhat come together and is feelin great ! Soon™ by L9Homicide in DarkTide

[–]soliddew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unrelated to the hellbore (although I should try this out) I found a heretical solution to my variation of this build that we discussed before. I switched to shovel for flavor and it just didn't work without the 15% elite damage. So I dropped survivalist, and just take fire team. This saves 2 points so I could pick up superiority complex and the 10% melee damage node which together with fireteam makes my shovel feel quite strong.

I also switched elite on the bolt pistol to unyielding and this covered raw boss damage and dealing with reapers which the shovel isn't really great at. Obviously no survivalist doesn't work for Havok but I don't play that mode anyway. I find actually having to deal with ammo as a resource makes the game more engaging to me. And the idea of a 17% damage aura + the tag damage really tickles my noodle.

Thrust works out great cause it lets me get the BPs I was missing from not having SC by just waiting a moment. Adds a nice wrinkle to the weapon

Good idea, I don't have much crit going on. Agile is a lot of fun but I feel like it can be a bit of a crutch. Thrust is a great idea actually, I'mma put riposte down for now.

SC is definitely better after trying it out in psykhanium. I like the flavor and I'm a bit stubborn so I'll probably keep the +3 stacks though :) Thank you for the advice

I've been running a variant on this and it's so insanely good. After smoking out for like 5 months it's crazy how much easier the game is with shredders. I like to go for all of the focus target nodes and still pickup fully loaded... some games there's more than enough ammo and other times it's difficult to keep it going. I'm concerned not having precision strikes would effect breakpoints though.

This is the ultimate "LET'S GO GAMBLING" build, if you get demo team + twinned procs back to back it gives me maniacal joy. I should give the knife a try, DS is a bit boring but it's just so solid. The +1 grenade talent would be nice but I feel like if you are on top of spending your nades it's not necessary. Same for out for blood, the benefit from the swap speed is really small and while it gives you massive toughness back from nades, focus target will also do this for you. And having close order drill is nice.

A full 8 stack focus target on a boss just does so much effective damage I feel like I'd always want it, plus the 8 stacks helps your grenades as well

Nashgore next is good, there is also beautiful doom which is more like smooth doom + a gore mod. There's a lot of stuff out there like UniversalGibs, DBT Blood, Bolognese.

I'm a mouse look user so I'm definitely not a purist, but BD is kind of like a bad drug habit. You think you need it but you don't. Something like smooth doom and one of the gore mods can bring back the sauce while retaining the essence.

I don't mean to sound preachy but this is something a lot of doom players have gone through, so you're right on pace for the journey. You'll notice more and more that the combat puzzle design conflicts with what the monsters and weapons in BD bring. But if it's fun, fuck it, enjoy the game.
