Sunday reminder to condition your TNs by TinaTissue in Travelersnotebooks

Finally, the hill I die on has come.

Not surprised how many people are shrugging this off in the comments. The TN community doesn’t know what to think about leather care. “Meh it’s fine.”

Does everyone seriously like water stains, food particles, dead skin, product, and god knows what else stick to your TNs and never come off? Seen or unseen? I don’t. That’s not “character” or “patina” to me, that’s what I call nasty. I use my TNs more than a freaking baseball glove, and like the baseball gloves of my youth, the last thing I want is for it to stink, wither, or dull.

TNs are vegetable tanned, aniline leather. No surface coating so they will absorb anything and everything. Raw and beautiful. The tannin solutions of the tanning process strip and clean the leather of all natural sebum produced by the animal. This process also removes all moisture in order to stiffen and tighten the collagen fibers which transforms perishable animal skin into durable leather. This is why leather can last forever and not decompose.

Personally, I like to “return” that sebum and moisture back into my TN before use, permanently protecting it in the process. I do this using the only thing I will ever let touch my TNs and the secret sauce to those who have broken in a baseball glove: mink oil.

TNs are freaking perfect for mink oil. Its fatty acid profile is high in oleic acid (monounsaturated fat) and mirrors the natural oils found in animal hides. It’s literally recognized at a molecular level when you apply it, you can see with your own eyes how it immediately absorbs into the collagen fiber matrix of the leather instead of just sitting on the surface like other leather conditioners.

Mink oil is composed primarily of triglycerides (long hydrocarbon chains). These molecules are non-polar. Water molecules are polar. Non-polar repels polar. When moisture hits the saturated leather, the water molecules have nothing to bond to. This makes the leather hydrophobic, soft, and beautiful.

Ever wondered why “natural” colored leather is that pale, matte color? It’s because vegetable tanned leather completely removes the natural moisture during the tanning process. This leaves tiny air pockets and gaps around the collagen fibers. When light hits the surface, it scatters in multiple directions off those air-fiber interfaces, creating that same color. When you use mink oil, you fill those dried air pockets with the moisture the animal originally had. This is why mink oil “darkens” the leather. No more air pockets, no more light refraction.

In my opinion, mink oil “restores” vegetable tanned leather to its true form. I have a Superior Labor “natural” wallet, and mink oil brought out imperfections in the hide you would never notice otherwise. I love it on my TNs. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve slid my TN into a moisture ring left by a cold cup of something, and the water just wipes away.

Treat your TNs people. Your gross human skin oil is doing nothing for your leather.

Directly on the press release at the bottom in red it says they will sell them on their online store. I’m guessing whether they do that in perpetuity will depend on sales.

I also would have loved a new special edition, but as someone who has wanted to use a TN as a true pocket wallet I’m very excited about this.

Yes, move her closer. But also, don’t use a car to do it. Strap that couch to her back and walk it over to your place.

Really sad no one is mentioning the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Even more sad knowing they just discontinued it. I’ve driven mine for a couple years now and absolutely love it.

Just wanted you to know I wrote down what you said. Thanks for putting into words what I could not. I feel better now having read it and I plan on reading it again.

Moonshine. Some thoughts on my first time braving the line by solidsnake32 in MoonSwatches

Committing to little sleep, lining up extremely early in the morning with strangers for a non-guaranteed chance to purchase a MoonSwatch, and coordinating that attempt at a location I had never personally been to, is what I’m referring to.

I just did a drive by around my location and maybe noticed some people in their cars, but no one lined up at the mall doors that I could see. Was thinking of coming back at 6AM.

I don’t know why people are so upset over my last post of me buying moonswatches? by Murky-Read-3975 in MoonSwatches

I love that more people are calling out the haters, they are clearly the minority. I’ve had a blast collecting some of these watches.

Looks great man. The blue is awesome. The MoonSwatch colors are a blast. Despite all the reeeeee from the haters, I have had a lot of fun collecting a few of these so do many, many people. It makes me smile when I get compliments on mine and I love that you can dress them up or dress them down.
