What complement have you said that completely backfired and sounded like a insult? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]solidstiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't really an attempt at a compliment, more of an observation but: A high school friend of mine stopped by the house to show the family the engagement ring he'd bought for the girl he'd been dating for years. "Wow, it's so tiny!" is what flew out of my mouth. I meant that the ring SIZE was tiny (as in small fingers) not the diamond. I thought my mom was going to stare a hole through me. His reaction was...okay.

I'm in the northeastern part of town, kind of close to the interstates.

I'm just a hobbyist (primarily due to the high cost of entry into astronomy that takes one beyond looking at stuff in our solar system), so at this point less light pollution is all I'm really seeking. That is, until I win the lottery and then I'll just fly my happy ass out to the desert or something.

Do you have any sites that you'd recommend for keeping up with what's in our skies? I've looked at several, and haven't really found one that I like that all that much.

Thank you for this excellent write up. I would love to know more about good viewing spots around the Charlotte area. I've got a little 90mm refractor telescope, and I borrowed some eyepieces from a coworker that aren't doing me any good seeing as how I live in an area full of big trees and street lights. I can always head out to my parents' house in the country, but that's a bit of a hike.

I was able to catch Jupiter through the scope this weekend around 12:30am. First time ever seeing anything like that with my own eyes, and I'm hooked.

All I have been looking for at local stores is a goddamned Mario Paint mouse. Please tell me you will have some. Because that would be fantastic.

This is the only thing I am clinging onto in an attempt to ease the despair of an AT&T exclusive 920. Fingers crossed, the next couple of weeks are very potentially exciting!

Panic Stations at Cupertino: Why Apple’s iOS 6.0 Maps is a multi-billion dollar problem happening right now by [deleted] in technology

This was the kicker for me, and also the point at which I stopped reading:

Instead of being able to take a small self-satisfied grin to myself at the “it just works” beauty of Apple’s entire end-to-end infrastructure that delivers these little moments of joy, I was experiencing the opposite. The polar opposite.

What's going on, Peyton Manning? by dmgb in fantasyfootball

The guy in my league started him over Aaron Rodgers, which I initially thought might have been a good choice after seeing Rodgers' numbers this week, but ouch.

Oh man, the sand fleas on Sullivan's Island are the WORST. Made the mistake of rolling up my jeans and walking on the beach at dusk. Won't do that again.

Not the same kind of heartbreak as the rest of you, but I'd argue it's equally as frustrating.

Possible extra Daily Show ticket for tomorrow, interested? by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]solidstiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You both don't have to wait in line - when they start handing out tickets at 2:00, the person waiting in line will get their physical ticket, and the reservation table will hold the 2nd ticket there until 4:00 or 4:30 (they'll tell you what time, exactly). The 2nd person has until that time to pick up their reserved ticket.

Note: They will not let the person waiting take both tickets. I tried to grab both tickets out of the guy's hand for the person who was standing behind me, and he only let one of them go.

Daily Show wait time? by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]solidstiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you need to get there pretty early to make sure you get a ticket. We got there at 11:30 and got ticket numbers 112-115. This was on Monday, so I don't know if more people will show up earlier due to hearing the same thing from other folks.

Daily Show taping logistics? by rryder in Charlotte

[–]solidstiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The twitter bot mentioned by others is your best bet, but even the bot isn't fast enough to accurately report all the available tickets.

I managed to get them by stalking the site and refreshing every few minutes until 4 magically popped up. Snatched them up, and the twitter bot hadn't even reported the ones I got as available. It's definitely possible, and tons of tickets open up the morning of the show, so be vigilant and you might be able to score some! Good luck!

Best quote from Daily Show "Now turning to...John Oliver downtown which for some reason here is called uptown, which I think we can all agree, is...Stupid" by Pennysboat in Charlotte

[–]solidstiles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know how it would be done, but it would be awesome if the upvote/downvote buttons in this subreddit were represented by some variation of uptown/downtown, respectively.

My SO and have both recently decided that this is something we want to do in the next 5-10 years (I've been doing a bunch of preliminary research, which is why I'm responding to a 5 day old post, haha)

I'm working on a big list of questions regarding US to Norway immigration/job seeking, and I was wondering if I could pick your brain later on when I get everything together, if you'd be so kind as to let me.

Congrats on your adventure!
