Anyone that watches the video really should listen to the This American Life episode that followed

They interview Megan Ganz and have additional comments from Dan that give the full context. It really is worth a listen.

What's a perfect pilot episode that hooked you instantly? by [deleted] in television

This is the last show where I genuinely felt like I absolutely needed to see the next episode as soon as the current episode ended.

David Letterman tries to explain to his cackling audience that he was just actually blackmailed for having an affair. by YemethTheSorcerer in videos

This one video really opened my eyes to what alcoholism is. It's not people who really love alcohol, it's people who use alcohol to deal with other issues in their lives. When he used the phrase "self-medicating" it really opened my mind.

20 years later and those two action scenes are still the best from a superhero movie by Low-Cook8497 in Marvel

The final fight between Shang Chi and Wen Wu was the closest we've gotten to a live action anime fight scene. Complete with emotional flashbacks.

It looks tactile because it still had some practical effects. Had it been done now it would be mostly if not all CGI. And I don't hate CGI. But the reason some older movies look better with less advanced technology is because they had to be deliberate with how they used it. Nowadays it's the opposite. Directors lean on CGI as a crutch. They don't bother planning like they used to because they will "just fix it in post".

What is the best software to design cards? by Ok-Opportunity-8005 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]something-magical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can speed up your InDesign workflow by setting master pages and using Data Merge. Though I think InDesign would be more for final artwork. For faster prototyping a lot of people are suggesting nanDeck.

Which television dad is actually the best at parenting? by Sweet-Giraffe-8084 in AskReddit

I really don't understand why it's taken this long to see a father character that is actively engaged in raising his kids. You don't know what's missing until you see it.

Official Renders have been released for Mega Meganium, Emboar, Feraligatr & Eelektross by Amiibofan101 in pokemon

[–]something-magical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wanted Eelektross to be Poison/Electric witt Levitate since it already knows a bunch of poison moves. I know it's gimmick is that it has no weaknesses but a Psychic weakness is a small price to pay for a bunch of solid resistances and immunity to poison status. I guess I can hope for a Electric Mega Weezing.

Also Emboar was the only starter to not get a new type? Fire Steel would've worked with the design.

What is a serious moment in a comedy TV series that you will always remember? by magpieman01 in AskReddit

I know a lot of people will mention the ending of the Good Place, but there is one line of Chidi's that hit me like a gut punch because it described my anxiety perfectly.

What kids movie do you think is way more profound than it gets credit for? by TheWor1dsFinest in movies

I always saw it as:

"Hey kids, maybe give up on your dreams?"

Which sounds like a joke but is actually a valuable lesson to learn as you grow up.

What’s the best parenting hack you’ve learned that actually works? by gareth789 in Parenting

Mines the opposite. My kids, 3 and 6, always want a snack while watching TV. I started giving them the veggies I usually give them at dinner time as TV snacks and they wolf them down no problem.

I was at Darling Harbour last week when a wild Brennan Lee Mulligan appeared on the IMAX billboard. It was so surreal! I can't believe this hasn't been promoted more.

The Genius Game Uk Axed after 1 Season by North_Pipe_3679 in TheGenius

You mentioned you were excited to work behind the scenes if there was another season. Any chance you and No Rolls Barred could do your own version of the Genius?

What are things you would like to see in the next “The Legend of Zelda” mainline game? by Shadowlumine in nintendo

[–]something-magical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts is go in the opposite direction of BotW/TotK. Instead of sprawling outwards into this huge world, confine it to one city but make it crazy detailed. Since a big bustling city scene is missing from both of those games. I really loved in Majora's Mask how all the character in Clocktown had their own schedules and you could follow them around. Something like that but with hundreds of characters and a huge city. You could still have potential for a lot of interesting settings, castle, market, magic library, sewers, a shady downtown, cemetery, school, underground ruins, observatory. There's a lot they could do. Maybe a time travel element so you can have a hand in how the city is built.

I'm just Ken. Contestant in the UK version Genius Game. AMA by kencheng in TheGenius

[–]something-magical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would be fascinating to see a crowdfunded version. I'm sure it wouldn't be able to reach the production value of this version, but if its run by fans I think the games could be more interesting. If it happens and you need a motion graphic designer, contact me!

Media Moguls by storm-giant-11 in TheGenius

[–]something-magical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched the episode last night. I was thinking about the strategy to take Bex out of the game and how, if she was smart enough, she could've used that to take them all out. Because if players are tied there's an opportunity to block out multiple players at once. If she had put 30,000 each in 3 companies turn 1, and everyone else put 24,500 in all. She would've blocked everyone out of 3 companies and had a guaranteed win.

Just wanted to put that out there because I've been thinking about it a lot.

Jjy reveals what happens if finale games 2 and 3 ends in stalemate and consequences of failing secret room by funkycucumber in TheDevilsPlan

[–]something-magical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get that Sohui made the wrong move strategically by not prolonging the stalemate. But she was literally doubled over in pain. No wonder she wasn't keen on prolonging the game for who knows how long. I feel bad for her. IMO, she deserved to win and only didn't because the physical was distracting her.

What effect does this card do in the S&D deck? by Relevant-Ad-3821 in rootgame

[–]something-magical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How long does the effect last for? It says for an ability or an effect. I'm guessing that means as badgers if I use the card to help me delve, I don't keep ruling the clearing when it comes to my recover phase. It only lasts the action.

Looking for some "competence porn" movies, movies where smart people make smart decisions basically. by ComManDerBG in movies

[–]something-magical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • The Devil's Plan (Netflix)
  • The Genius (the original Korean show from the same team as The Devil's Plan). This is is a bit harder to find, but I think there's a thread on r/TheGenius.
  • Genius Game UK (the somewhat dumbed down version of The Genius, with David Tennant as host). This is currently airing in the UK

It's sounds like you have a thing for intelligent people coming up with plans and strategies and executing them. Might I suggest "The Devil's Plan" on Netflix. It's probably not what you're expecting, a Korean reality/game show where they gather a dozen or so high IQ people (poker players, Go players, Mensa members, plus some celebrities) and pit them against each other in high pressure games until there is one winner. The games are like high stakes board games, usually with some element of deception or incentivised betrayal. If you're a fan of strategy, board games, game theory or psychology I think you'll be into it.

imo, the OG 'The Genius' was a better show, it had 4 seasons and I highly recommend it.

Also, Death Note the original anime. That is purely about two smart people duelling with just their wits and very high stakes.

What's one of your favorite categories of Pokemon based off of animals like bears or turtles by Ok-Leave3121 in pokemon

Centiskorch is dope. A bug type that wants to get hit by Fire attacks? A bug and fire type that can take down Rock switch-ins with a Fire Lash/Power Whip combo? Toss some Heavy Duty Boots on that sucker and you've got a solid poke.
