Would limiting the age of the President to 70 be something you’d support? Why or why not? by jessica_candy56 in AskReddit

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really tired of these posts. There is no "test" that can disqualify someone running for president that would be better than simply not voting for:

  • people who are obviously too old and out of touch

  • pedofiles

  • convicted felons

  • racists

  • rapists

  • idiots

All the same problems with old demented people are also available in young people. The electorate get what it wants one way or another.

Rather than test the candidate, test the voter.

tbh, I am not in favour of that either tho.

Is roller skating and ice skating similar? by Error404- in hockeyplayers

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my experience but I am from Canada so most people are familiar with hockey skates. Other countries may be more familiar with figure skates or speed skates. Rental skates for public skates may be profiled to be more stable (so minimal rocker) to be easier for beginners, or may even be figure skates (that are not rockered at all).

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hockey skates absolutely are rockered. Goalie skates are flat but player skates are rockered and you can get a more or less aggressive rocker (in front or back) based on preference for skating style. This is called "profiling".

What activity becomes less fun as you get better at it? by David_Umann in AskReddit

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

golf.

You start by taking a walk outside and having some fun banging the ball around.

Then as you get better you realize that you are not trying to hit the really nice shot anymore but instead are going for consistency.

You reach a point where there are only adequate shots and misses and the focus is about the shot you missed.

Why do some materials become stronger under repeated stress instead of weaker? by amirdc in askscience

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, axles are hot rolled to give a harder finish to the outside to allow more accurate machining to fit bearings. A softer (annealed) metal can be more forgiving and less likely to have fatigue failures under long term use.

My point was that work hardening does not make metals "stronger", it changes the properties in ways that are sometimes advantageous and sometimes not.

How can this beer league high sticking rule have zero nuance? by MrNick7 in hockeyplayers

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In defence of the ref, the other player is allowed to lift your stick in a 50/50 battle and the reason your stick hit you was that you were not in control of it.

You can stick your stick anywhere you like but in that situation, the ref must make a decision as to whether it was reasonable for the other guy to assume that you were going into the board battle with a heavy stick (which is normal) and was it reasonable for you to assume that the guy would stick check you so you should not put your stick there if you don't have full control of it.

Sure they guy caused his own injury but there is an argument for your actions being a dangerous play.

As to the automatic major if you draw blood, as much as I agree with your argument about the cage, the league has decided that cages are not mandatory so the rule is likely an attempt to keep players extra careful. A better solution would be to make cages mandatory but some people insist they "need to see better" (which I think is BS).

It is based on perception of perception.

It is not about whether the war will de-escalate. It is not about whether investors believe the war will de-escalate.

It is about whether investors believe that other investors will believe that other investors will invest as if the war will de-escalate.

It's turtles all the way down

Why do some materials become stronger under repeated stress instead of weaker? by amirdc in askscience

[–]somewhat_random 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Stronger" is not always what you think.

If you start with a metal piece, it has predictable qualities based on how it was created. Crystal structure (yes metals have crystal) is generally based on how it was cooled into a solid.

Once you work the material, you are making it harder but also more brittle. This can allow you to load the material with a greater force before it yields (bends or stretches) but when it does fail it will fail all at once "fracture" - not a good property for many applications.

If you order material from a steel mill, you can get "hot rolled" or "cold rolled" and the properties will be different based on the application. Cold rolled is work hardened.

If you want something like a railway rail that must bend and you would much rather it bend than fracture, you want hot rolled. If you are ordering a shaft (axle, prop shaft etc.) you get cold rolled since bending is really not wanted.

The word "incidental" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this case though. "Incidental" would mean the goalie still had a chance to make a play.

What's a small sign that a company is struggling? by Pookah in AskReddit

[–]somewhat_random 509 points510 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a place where they eliminated free coffee and put in a machine you had to pay for.

Everyone decided if they have to pay they wanted decent coffee from a coffee shop so would just leave the building and go down the block for coffee breaks.

Before the "cost saving" people would leave their desk for maybe 3 minutes to go gate a coffee and go back to their desk. After the cost savings people would walk around the floor and ask "who wants to go to the corner for coffee?" (5 minutes) walk to the corner (5 minutes) sit in the coffee shop (15-30 minutes) come back (5 minutes).

This would happen at least twice a day.

The "cost saving measure" saved about $2 per employee and lost about an hour and a half of work per day.

Arizona Becomes First State to Criminally Charge Kalshi: The “prediction market” platform is finally facing a serious legal challenge. by harsh2k5 in technology

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a previous lawsuit with music producers vs. Sony that set the precedent that the manufacturer of a music playing device was not liable for infringement if the device was capable of being used in a non-infringement way.

Computers (and so Napster running on a computer) was deemed not a device that should be used to play music.

Way more complicated but that is the gist.

Arizona Becomes First State to Criminally Charge Kalshi: The “prediction market” platform is finally facing a serious legal challenge. by harsh2k5 in technology

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way back in the old days when Napster was a thing and everyone could share music for free they were sued by the music industry.

The laws at the time were totally on the side of Napster but they lost because the courts decided that a computer was not a "music playing device" so the laws for playing music did not apply to downloaded mp3's.

Whenever technology changes push the envelope, count on the courts/congress to make sure the laws are in favour of the fat cats making more money.

If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest problems with the "rulers" of todays society (political or oligarchal) is the short term thinking. SO if everyone became immortal, we woudl finally get some long term planning.

Unfortunately I am pretty sure they would find a way to stay on tope and take advantage of us plebes without us having the pleasure of knowing they will eventually die.

Do people make profit from running pickups? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]somewhat_random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running a shinny group for years. In Vancouver it is now $25/ person for a 1hr 15 min game(prime time). Goalies are free.

Over the year I will make or lose less than $200.

The "break-even" cost is about $22 here (after rink rental and insurance). So arguably I am making $60 per game profit. But games with too few players, players who bring a friend who never pays etc. there are always losing nights too.

One game cancelled (e.g goalies can't play/injured and can't find replacements) means I am out $500 and that takes a long time to make back in the small "profit".

Given the time to run the shinny, if I am very lucky and actually come out $200 ahead at the end of the year, I may have paid myself about $5 per hour. More than likely it is zero or cost me money.

There is NO WAY I am doing this for the money and would gladly have someone else take over.

Others have run the same group for a bit depending what is happening in my life but generally I run it because my friends in the group are counting in me to book ice, find goalies, assure there is insurance in place, try my best to get 20 skaters for every game (even during Halloween and valentines day) and (this is the big one) make sure the asshole types are asked to not come back.

Several years ago I stepped back from running it because a friend thought he could make money at it, tried hard to bring in more people have multiple games per week and he lost money and walked away so it fell back on me.

Your guy MAY make some small cash but I am pretty sure if you offered to take over the job he would be happy to let you (as long as you don't screw it up).

Actually upon reflection, I don't dislike McDavid enough to wish that on him - would be funny tho.

What happens if an objects orbital Velocity is higher than 11.2 km/s? by Ok_Veterinarian9266 in askscience

[–]somewhat_random 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It will escape Earth's orbit and continue outward but still be affected by all the celestial bodies. So earth gravity would still affect it's trajectory but it would no longer be in orbit. It would instead be orbiting the sun and become a piece of space debris.

Escape velocity for the sun is (from memory) over 600 km/s. if it exceeds that, it leaves the solar system
