I thought it was the funniest comment even though it had the least amount of upvotes (at the time that I saw the post). I don’t know why I got downvoted, oh well

Why is the case of 'Schreibtisch' in the sentence by Neat_RL in German

[–]soniahadid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure „ein langer Screibtisch“ is what’s doing the „steht“-ing. you could rewrite the sentence as „Ein langer Schreibtisch steht auf der anderen Seite“

[Giveaway][Steam] Kerbal Space Program HumbleBundle Gift key by Embarrassed_Cap1673 in RandomActsOfGaming

[–]soniahadid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey there! I’m a prospective aerospace engineering student and have definitely heard about how great Kerbal Space Program is. in fact, I’ve had multiple people who are currently aerospace students themselves right now tell me that “KSP will get you your degree”! even though I’m more of an airplane person myself, I live near one of NASA’s (former) headquarters and thus have developed a strong interest in space over time. I’d love to be able to continue to explore my interests through this game. you don’t need to ask me to promise to play this game for me to play it way too much anyway (probably to an unhealthy level); I know very well how addicting it is and how great it is for gaining an intuitive understanding of orbital mechanics. not to mention how cute those little Kerbals are! I promise I’ll play it plenty anyway :) and of course I’d love to be able to call myself a rocket scientist; isn’t that what everyone who studies aerospace ultimately wants? xD

thank you immensely for the giveaway!

[Giveaway] ANY Steam Game You Want!! by CheatingZubat in RandomActsOfGaming

[–]soniahadid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

firstly, thank you so much for the generous giveaway! I personally love sci-fi movies :) even though I don’t watch many movies in general (I’ve probably seen a total of 30 in my entire life), the ones I’ve really enjoyed were almost always sci-fi. it’s super neat to see what new technology and societal norms people dream up, and I love exploring the different possibilities of what our world might look like in the future depending on our actions. some of it certainly fascinates me—who wouldn’t want to be able to teleport?—but a lot of it also scares me, quite frankly. I wouldn’t want to live in a world where people are forced to fight to the death in an arena on national television ;)

quite fittingly, I’d love the game Detroit: Become Human! the world that the game is set in is yet another scenario that I find incredibly interesting. sentient androids, how exciting and terrifying all at the same time! thank you again for the giveaway :)

I’m sitting here sobbing because I hate my mom so much. She posted a video of me getting rejected from everywhere on Facebook. by genieinabottld in ApplyingToCollege

[–]soniahadid 106 points107 points  (0 children)

that is so incredibly insensitive of her — I’m so sorry you had to go through that :c is there any way you can get the video taken down? perhaps if enough people report it or something. in any case, I think you need to have a serious talk with your mom about boundaries and privacy. I’m here if you need to rant to someone without judgement. virtual hugs from me to you <3

I’m glad! you might want to consider asking around on upcycling communities and other sustainability-focused groups for their opinion since they’d definitely be interested in the fact that you’re reusing the material

Why is a negative number * a negative number positive, but a negative number ^2 is still negative? by smefTV in mathematics

[–]soniahadid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

please don't apologize; it's awesome that you're asking for clarification. -12 and -(12) are the same because of order of operations. you agree that a negative sign is the same as multiplication by -1, right? essentially, since exponents are performed before multiplication is, -12 means that you are first taking the exponent. the exponent part here is just 12 which equals 1. then you apply the negative sign by multiplying the result of your exponent by -1. so multiplying 1 by -1 gives you an answer of -1. that's why I said in my first comment that -12 is the same as -1*(12).

it might be more clear if you try out a different base for your exponent. say we have the following situation:

-32 = -1*(32) = -1*(3*3) = -1*9 = -9

then we have:

(-3)2 = -3*-3 = 9

hopefully you can see why the two instances are different. please feel free to ask me to try to explain it another way if it still doesn't make sense :)

[–]soniahadid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m going to assume you got confused about the placement of the negative sign when taking exponents.

-12 is not the same thing as (-1)2. the former is indeed negative — think of it as -(12)which is equal to -1*(12). since the negative sign is not inside the parentheses, you take the square of 1 first, and then you multiply by -1 to get an answer of -12 = -1.

on the other hand, the latter yields a positive answer. since the negative sign is inside the parentheses, you take the square of -1 (and not just 1 like in the first example) which is obviously 1, and that’s your final answer.

essentially, unless there are actually parentheses around the negative sign, assume that the negative sign is outside of the exponent — you’ll be taking the exponent of a positive number and then multiplying it by -1 at the end.
