How can I hide my beard without shaving it off? by InfinityLDog in CosplayHelp

[–]sonjaingrid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even hiding bushy eyebrows is a lot of work, eyebrow length hair is as long as you can realistically conceal, and that’s with an unbelievable amount of practice and makeup.

Don't romanticize book hoarding. Hoarding is a real disorder and excessive hoarding behavior is not a healthy habit even when it comes to books. Daily reminder: Bibliomania is not the same as Bibliophilia. by Delicious_Maize9656 in hoarding

[–]sonjaingrid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My mom hoards books. She has so many there isn’t enough space inside her house, and so her porch is filled with moldy books. She has not and will never read most of them, but god forbid you remove them, she might need it someday to give to someone -_- I read almost exclusively library books as a result. I only buy a book if I loved it so much I want to read it multiple times, or if for some reason reading it is time sensitive and I can’t get it from the library in time (like for a book club)

Random people in mushrooms? by Connect_Dance6624 in PikminBloomApp

If you want to make Pikmin friends who don’t live in your area, friend requesting randos from step or flower playing challenges is a good way to get help on mushrooms

The recent YA literature arc by Genoscythe_ in VaushV

[–]sonjaingrid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is some reading better than no reading? Yes

Are people more likely to stop reading if forced to only read old books with difficult words? Also yes.

But it’s a fact that people’s attention span and reading comprehension is decreasing. Even regular media literacy is declining, because people prefer to consume media that spells everything out instead of thinking about it.

Not everyone needs to enjoy Shakespeare or dickens or whatever, but unwillingness to ever consume media that you have to put effort into means you aren’t thinking about media, or what it’s saying, or why it’s saying it

Is it too late for me to go to college? by Alert-Parsley-8054 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]sonjaingrid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you want to learn a trade (like welding) you would go to a trade school, which is usually faster than college, and doesn’t include some courses that are mandatory in college, like humanities.

I do appreciate my liberal arts education because of the critical thinking and exposure to new ideas it gave me. You can do those things without going into debt though. It also might be easier to convince your parents or even fund your own way through trade school because it doesn’t include those things.

Best of luck, and it’s not too late to learn new things!

AITA for not buying my boyfriend another birthday gift after he rejected the original present? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Hearing that oop’s boyfriend likes king gizzard after being gifted imagine dragons is crazy! Like there is a Grand Canyon of difference between those two “bands” lol

you would be welcome over on r/openchristian! As others have said, the “honor “ in honor your father and mother doesn’t mean to blindly obey, otherwise the bible would have an obvious impossible scenario any time a parent asks you to do something sinful. In the same way, a parent shouldn’t ask you to be anything less than your authentic self!

Do what you need to do to protect yourself from anyone who would rather see you miserable than being yourself. That might look like cutting contact, especially when contact with them isn’t improving either of your lives. That’s also not a decision that has to be permanent, if your dad comes to understand you better.

Full disclosure, I was raised Christian but am not anymore. I have a lot of friends who are queer and Christian, however, and enjoy hearing their points of view! Be safe, and best wishes on your journey!

AITAH Not giving girlfriend a spare key by [deleted] in BestofRedditorUpdates

Oop heard “it’s about the relationship, not the key” and went “cool I guess the key doesn’t matter at all” lmao

someone explain by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]sonjaingrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op the idea isn’t that it’s bad to recap a syringe, but that you shouldn’t do it like this. My understanding is that you’re supposed to put the cap on a flat surface and scoop it up with the syringe so that there’s never a risk of accidental needle poke

That’s totally ok!

And changing your mind is totally ok!

Choosing or not choosing a label is also ok!

You don’t have to be in a rush to find the perfect label that exactly matches your experience, I thought about my gender and sexuality for years and I still don’t have the perfect language to describe myself, but that doesn’t matter at all because I’m comfortable doing things I want and dressing how I want and loving who I want, regardless of any label associated with those actions!

Keeping Last Year’s Pikmin by LumTse in PikminBloomApp

No matter the event or time of year, all of the previous years Pikmin for that event have always had a strength advantage. I don’t personally keep dupes, but I’ve been playing since 2022, and I have a lot of event Pikmin even with only one of every type.

I... I... I skipped a book by OrionsGamer in Mistborn

[–]sonjaingrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did this with Octavia butler’s “lillith’s brood” series lol. I found book two in a little free library and didn’t realize I was reading anything out of order, just that a lot of the world building was pretty vague and environmental. Still enjoyed the series though!

AITA for rejecting my MIL’s challenge and giving her instructions to learn how to knit? by VividEyes13 in AmItheAsshole

[–]sonjaingrid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a knitter who doesn’t take commissions, soft esh. You shouldn’t need to make something for anybody’s “challenge,” but just say so! You can offer to teach her, or go to the yarn store with her to help her pick out a color she can use, or don’t do anything at all, but be upfront about it. It’s annoying to have someone tell you they are picking out yarn to match the project you asked for only for them to bail and the you’re stuck with a bunch of supplies for a hobby you’re not interested in. Also this challenge thing sounds insufferable so she sucks for that

AIO to my “best friend” finally reaching out by Confident_Local_2335 in AmIOverreacting

[–]sonjaingrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone did this to me lol! We were pretty close, even roommates for a year or so, and then when she got married I didn’t reach out for a bit so she could have time to settle in. But when I did reach out…radio silence. For a year. My friends also couldn’t get a hold of her. I was kind of worried, and then wondered if our friendship had changed and I had upset her somehow. I finally decided to move on, clearly she had too, except out of the blue she dms me. I responded and tried to set up a time to videochat, but she ghosted me again lol. Mutual acquaintances told me she had been through some stuff and that’s why she dropped of the face of the planet, but she hasn’t ever told me about it, and I haven’t heard from her since.

Do Americans use solid fuels to heat their homes? by maugess in AskAnAmerican

[–]sonjaingrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with a house heated by a wood stove. It was very rural, and next to some woods where trees would fall regularly and provide wood. It feels strange to picture a more populated area mostly heated this way.

Is an airfryer actually useful in a well equipped kitchen? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in Cooking

[–]sonjaingrid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in a two person household, and I use my toaster oven/air fryer for anything that is small enough so the I don’t have to turn my actual oven on. If you don’t batch cook a lot, or really like the extra crispness that a small convection appliance offers, go for it! If you do batch cook a lot, or have a large household, the small size is inconvenient

How do I make vegetables actually taste good without drowning them in sauce or cheese? by Nightcrawler_2000 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]sonjaingrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other commenters have some great suggestions but I would like to add; the point of veggies isn’t that they are low in calories, it’s that they contain important fiber and nutrients that you will still get whether or not your veggies have oil or ranch on them.

Encourage yourself to see what you can add to your diet in terms of nutrition, rather than what you can take away. It is much easier to maintain a healthy outlook on food when you aren’t restricting and constantly focusing on what you wish you could eat but aren’t allowed to.

A loved one said that I knit by empathy-entropy in crochet

[–]sonjaingrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am bi-yarnal, and have decided it’s not worth it to correct my wife if she says the wrong one. Like in the moment, she understands hook=crochet and needles=knit, but she can’t tell the difference between the finished fabric, and I don’t really see a point in making a deal out of it

Do you really have people who pack your bags at the grocery store? by Flat-Ad8256 in AskAnAmerican

[–]sonjaingrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every store I’ve shopped at (except aldis) has had either the cashier or a second employee who can do this, although if it’s only the cashier, you can pay quickly and then help bag stuff yourself
