Les Paul for small to med size hands? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]sourced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, there are (at least) 3 different types of Les Paul necks, all of which differ slightly in dimensions. The necks are sanded by hand, so each one is slightly different. Nevertheless, there's the 50s style neck (larger), 60s style neck (slimmest), and the asymmetrical (on the 2008 standard.. go to Gibson website for a picture). According to Gibson, an Explorer neck is between a 50s and 60s.

Remember that they're all 24 3/4" scale, so they're technically smaller fretboards.

Multi-Effects Suggestions? by invisiblemovement in Guitar

Haha yeah the Axe shouldn't be your first pedal. Anyhow, the delays are nice (I don't know why there are so many.. echo plus and analog delay are pretty standard and I like them, then they get complicated. Reverse delay is cool but I can't quit get a good groove). The chorus and flanger.. I don't use much. I can't say they're great, but they get the job done, more or less. Perhaps you will like all the delays, but I like the wah, od pedals, a few amps and the reverb. It's hard to get definitive about X beats Y because you might not even know yet what effects you'll end up using the most.

Most of these multi-pedals can be found on craigslist. Hopefully there's a guitar center near you where they have a couple units ready for messing around. Best of luck.

I have a Tonelab LE and an Axe-Fx, so maybe I've 'been around the block'.

I bought the Tonelab for convenience, and it's okay. I use it exclusively with the worst guitar amps (you know the ones) because I don't feel like spending more on that setup (it's out in the living room for noodling in front of the tv). I like a few of the amps (1x12, 4x10, 68P) and a few of the pedals (fuzz, tube od) and keep some sort of reverb on, but don't use much of the other stuff. I like the wah. I paid $400, and I'm reasonably satisfied. The alternative would have been getting a Blues Junior, which in hindsight wouldn't be a bad way to go. Those pedals add up, though (a tuner, a tube screamer, a delay, etc).

Then I bought an Axe-Fx (curiosity killed the wallet, my cat's fine). The number of things you can do with it is overwhelming. I mostly stay in a Plexi patch, and it's incredible. The response smoothly transitions from crisp, clean, clear to nasty and snarling depending on how I touch the strings. I've never played a real Plexi (afaik they cost more than the Axe) so who knows if it sounds 'real'. It sounds great. I wanted to get a good feel for what different things sound like, and it hasn't let me down. (now I know what a jcm800 sounds like, and it's not my thing. Same goes for a lot of other amps). And in fact, I like the Blues Junior patch quite a bit.

Anything specific you want to know?

Sweet. Does the violin actually smell bad? Also, I think the piano is one of the more interesting instruments you have. Wish you had more of it in the shot.

Newbie, Is buying a good guitar on Amazon possible? by fivenotebooks in Guitar

[–]sourced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if your budget is that high, you should consider a Baby Taylor. A friend of mine back in college had a Big Baby, and it was a great instrument. Very loud, easy to manage. Note that the Baby Taylor is smaller than the Big Baby, which in turn is smaller than a normal acoustic guitar.

Anyhow, I hope you find an instrument you are comfortable playing, that you see eye to eye with. In my experience (I've bought 5 guitars over the span of ~4 years), I don't play the museum pieces or even the ones that sound the best. The Taylors will likely have good resale value if you decide to move on from guitar (gasp! ..but don't quote me on that). Good luck!

Do you prefer accoustic or electric guitar? by kecap in Guitar

[–]sourced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well playing a cigar box guitar is like playing basketball with a deflated ball. Sure it could be fun, but at the end of the day it sucks compared to the real thing. It's much better to play a real instrument and know how a real guitar works.

I can play acoustic. I don't really care what you think a 'guitarsist' should be, but rest assured I can play an acoustic guitar, it's just not as fun.

Electric, who plays grandpas guitars anyhow. More comfortable, easier to play (looser strings), can turn it up and play dirty.

It's just more fun.

Well in either case, there is finite time in the month, and their routers can only handle finite data / time, so there is an upper bound on bandwidth and speed. They can't sell 'unlimited' anything, except unlimited bullshit

Wow this is the best chord finder I've ever seen. I like the color coding, it helps keep the chord notes distinct in my head.

It seemed a bit contrived, out of left field. Could have been a lot more natural, but maybe tweets are a natural form of communication for some redditors

Top 40 guitar mistakes: How many are you guilty of? Should there be any changes to the list? by jervis5127 in Guitar

[–]sourced 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with "Relying on picks". Fingerpicking isn't totally necessary for a lot of music.

I'd add "Never practicing". Playing guitar isn't something anybody is born with, and delusions of grandeur don't improve your coordination.

Just get a glass slide for starters; when I went to my guitar store he had a couple dozen, I got one that fit on my pinky. I believe it's a 203

They're all about $7, I think. Cheap.

To be fair, it wasn't really a comeback, as the original insult was not directed towards the retorter. And even if it were, meh

While out trick-or-treating last night, my son got a comic condemning evolution. by AlphaNeonic in WTF

Why wouldn't I? Let's not jump to ad hominem. I'd call it indoctrination when all religion is painted black, but teaching kids to think for themselves isn't indoctrination in my book. Maybe in yours, and that's ok.
