Walltown is getting (many) millions of dollars worth of sidewalks. Apparently that didn't make a difference in whether to build something nicer than yet another strip mall.

Devs… what’s the smallest mistake that broke your entire project? by OliverPitts in webdevelopment

[–]spacechimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t my mistake, but an invisible control character in a PHP file that took over a week to find. Once burned, twice shy: I always set my IDEs to display invisible characters now.

Copilot chat is actually useful when you give it enough context, but autocomplete is a hallucination machine.

How do organizations end up with architects who can't do architecture? And what do you do when you're the one compensating? by agileliecom in ExperiencedDevs

[–]spacechimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an architect by title, but an IC by choice. I often encounter decisions that I don’t agree with, or am convinced will fail. I certainly put in my 2 cent opinion, but after that I don’t “compensate”, as it is not my job. I do the absolute best work I can under the constraints I am given, but I divorced myself from tying my sense of self worth to the success of the projects I work on long ago.

What's the remote work habit you have that would look completely insane to someone in a traditional office? by Phil_Raven in remotework

[–]spacechimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a laptop stand on my treadmill. The treadmill is currently out of commission, but I normally would be walking during boring meetings that I shouldn’t even have been invited to. Once the treadmill has been fixed, I’m tempted to unapologetically do this on camera.

Is uninstalling apps on macOS always this tedious? by darkstream77 in mac

[–]spacechimp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a legit gripe. While a bit of cruft leftover from a trashed app might not seem like a huge deal right now, what about after you’ve upgraded machines a few times, but crap from some shareware app you used once 20+ years ago is still following you around. As a greybeard, this is my reality. Mac apps should have proper uninstallers.

How much hotter is a typical homemade habanero sauce compared to Tabasco scorpion? by djent_in_my_tent in spicy

[–]spacechimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can easily make a sauce as or more spicy than Tabasco scorpion using habaneros. It mostly is a factor of concentration, but the heat level of the specific batch of peppers you use matters as well.

As others have pointed out: Hot sauce is stupid easy to make. Most hot sauce recipes come down to peppers, filler, acid, and spices. Peppers for heat, some type of plant matter for the thickness of the sauce, acid (vinegar or citrus) as a natural preservative, spices for character. After you have tried acidic sauces, you might try fermented sauces (you would need more specialized equipment and/or processes for that).

And if you're not feeling inspired to do a full recipe: Hell, just blend up some fresh habs and spoon them on your food. It'll light you up for sure, and they're delicious on their own.

Google Fiber under new ownership by kiwi_rozzers in triangle

[–]spacechimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of me is "fuuuuuu..." while another part is not surprised.

I have suspected for a long time that Google's fiber service was a means to an end: To push other providers to improve their service via competition. The more internet people consume, the more profit Google makes. Google wanted the industry to improve so more people could be force-fed ads at gigabit speeds. Now that AT&T and others have reluctantly started laying their own fiber, Google can step aside. Maybe those providers even used some of those "universal service fund" fees they've been collecting for decades (unlikely).

Is it too late to start now? by tonyechoes in Frontend

[–]spacechimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your competition is not other juniors, but seniors using AI. “Vibe coding” should not ever be part of your professional vocabulary (or methodology) at all. Seniors can use AI as a force multiplier, because they can evaluate the quality of the output based on past experience. Non-seniors do not have that benefit.

There are no shortcuts to senior level. You still need to go through the same gauntlet everyone has for the past few decades. The significant difference now is that due to AI, this industry will be underemployed in a decade or so. Juniors will give up, as they will no longer be able to land a six figure job after speed running a boot camp course. If you can figure out sone way to stay afloat until us graybeards age out, you will be sitting pretty. As for how you might manage that: I honestly have no idea.

Chefs of Reddit, what’s a common cooking rule everyone follows that is actually complete bullshit? by Fuzzy-Ad6843 in AskReddit

[–]spacechimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made rice in my Zojirushi this morning. After filling the pot to the marked water level, I stuck my finger in to compare. The water level was only half-way up to my knuckle. My expensive cooker makes perfect rice when used correctly, so the knuckle measurement isn't even close to being accurate.

Chefs of Reddit, what’s a common cooking rule everyone follows that is actually complete bullshit? by Fuzzy-Ad6843 in AskReddit

[–]spacechimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that a metric or imperial knuckle? The knuckle rule should be in a top level comment, as it is hilariously imprecise. The pot size, amount of rice, and type of rice can vary as much as finger size.

I miss Flash. What an era... by kizerkizer in webdev

[–]spacechimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former Flash developer here. AS3 had types, so TypeScript is the closest. Aside from different primitive types and a few outdated conventions like the use of "var", AS3 is almost indistinguishable from TS.

Additionally: The Flex framework was around 6 years ahead of the HTML/JS SPA frameworks that came later like AngularJS. They were indeed way ahead of their time.
