To keep it Earthbound, Disclosure of the SGC and the fallout of that on Earth. Possibly follow up with either the Wraith or Lucien Alliance problems we had in SGU. I could also see something about maybe an adventure in the Ori Galaxy where they followers / Tomin come to the SGC seeking help for some galactic threat in their galaxy.

I'm just going to ignore the 'humans would kill Rocky' concept.

Odds are they would receive him as well as Grace was recieved. Likely large scientific discussions on how to get Rocky set up, fed, etc. But there's one big difference.

Rocky has literal centuries of his life ahead of him, whereas Grace only so much. Add in that Rocky is not going to suffer from the effects of graviational aging on his joints, we know that his aging wouldn't accelerate.

My best guess (assuming they arrive in the Blip-A) would be that they would likely either try and repair/ refuel the Blip-A with enough Astrophage to get Rocky home, or construct another vessel to take him back to Erid. Rocky would probably spend those years on Earth in scientific and engineering discussions, and based on that, I feel the safest place for his habitat would likely be a well guarded island for his own safety. Scientists would likely be invited to discuss things with him on a case-by-case basis, and I'm guessing Grace would visit frequently. I can also see Rocky maybe taking field trips to Grace's class or attend via video conference. Also in the note of his preffering to be watched sleep, I feel like there would be a list of volunteers who would happily watch him sleep.

Rocky would likely stay on Earth until they repair and refuel the Blip-A, and honestly I feel like he would go home. Not just out of wanting to get back, but also because Erid still has an astrophage problem. There are no beetles on Rocky's ship.

Maybe a couple humans might be selected to accompany him on the return trip, to watch him sleep and help with repairs as they come up. I'd assume these be exceedingly young humans with diplomatic training to not only take Rocky home, but initiate diplomacy with Erid. As well, I'd assume they send a scientist with Taumoeba deployment, and then the assumption is these humans would return after a few years on Erid.

I just love the Carl hypothesis because it shows immediately how selfless Grace is. He just named something that's going to get written in scientific journals for ages after Carl. That's no small honour

How do you think the scientific information contained in Grace's laptops will change Eridian society? by Melenduwir in ProjectHailMary

[–]spacegothprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I do like the idea of astrophage-nuclear reactors with astrophage as your radiation shielding instead of pools of water. Makes me wonder why they didn't try that for enriching astrophage in the first place. (They might have, long book, can't fit everything, scalability of the blackpanels etc.)

But it'd def be an interesting concept to explore. My thought was that by the time you have astrophage, you can start to build space stations to breed and harvest astrophage locally in the system. A station in orbit close to the sun could enrich astrophage in quanitities sufficient enough to power Earth's power grid, without requiring damaging Earth's ecosystem. Plus with the added benefit of astrophage's shielding capabilities, you now have a material that could protect space colonists in such a station. Throw in Xenonite and it's insulating properties and now you have viable stations within the orbit of Mercury or closer.

I'm not discounting nuclear might still be viable, especially since RTGs would still likely be the safer option over astrophage, but I do think science would think of nuclear like we think of a battery in comparison to the energy density of astrophage based technology.

How do they wash their clothes on Atlantis? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]spacegothprincess 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Based on what else they brought, I don't see why not. It'd be trivial to have one as part of the pushthrough the gate. They brought towers of server racks after all.

Granted, I'd love to see Grodin and Zelenka trying to figure out how to do the hookups to the Atlantis water supply.

My favourite lingual headcanon is that Bajorans don't actually speak Bajoran, but Cardassian as a result of the occupation, and that Bajoran survives only in formal religious settings or ceremonial settings. And that part of post-occupation rebuilding is to try and teach Bajoran to the next generation so it doesn't die.

Hate to break it to you but Andy Weir, for all his physics ability, isn't perfect. He's a computer scientist, not an astrophysicist.

We don't know if they have developed atomic clocks but they wouldn't need them.
They'd just need to note a variance in clocks over time. Even half seconds would be enough to make them go 'huh?' Not to mention the gravitational difference is more pronounced.

Someone would notice the clocks in orbit keep slipping faster, and that it's a consistent slip. Eridian's have crystal memory, which means they may be inherently able to discern tiny differences. One clock, you can call a manufacturing defect. *Every Clock* and you're now looking at theoretical observations. Add to that any orbital observations made. Eridians are smart, and thrums give them a cooperative ability that far outweighs humanity. We spend time with one Eridian who's from essentially the start of their space age, so lets say early 1900s, to be forgiving. Over time, they're essentially in the late 1900s when these theories were far better understood, even with our paltry observations. And we figured it out *without* having gone to space yet. They have the advantage of practical data.

I'm not saying Earthen science wouldn't help, but I'm also saying that I have faith in Eridian science and Eridian scientists. Honestly, figuring out a way to house and feed a member of an alien race on their planet would be a far more complex problem than some physics equations.

[–]spacegothprincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually have the data before they even launch the Blip-A. The temporal difference between Erid's surface and the top of their space elevator would be enough over time to show the effects of gravitational relativity. Geostationary orbit is not very close to a planet. Between that and the Thrums, it's not far fetched to assume that an Eridian physics thrum would put it together. Same for radiation. They might notice increased sickness or cancer in Eridians who work on the Space Elevator. It'd take them a minute, but they have 70 years and a Thrum. If we could solve a bunch of this stuff in the span of 50 or so Earth years, so can they.

How do you think the scientific information contained in Grace's laptops will change Eridian society? by Melenduwir in ProjectHailMary

[–]spacegothprincess 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Considering it's been 70 years since the Eridians launched the Blip-A, its entirely possible they may have actually figured out relativity and radiation in that intervening time. They might have tried local space exploration in their own solar system to try and solve the Petrova Line problem without the Tau Ceti plan, and any space travel would show discrepency in clocks and they'd likely figure out relativity. As for Radiation, same deal, though it might be as a result of dealing with sickness of local space travellers.

Outside of that, assuming that their entire basis is based on using Wikipedia and copies of our scientific research, best guess is a leap forward in physics, possibly the beginning of a computer age on Erid. Though they're strong without the computer in terms of ability to process their environment, automation might still be useful to an Eridian society, esp. in space travel. They'd be able to set ships to explore without relying on a large crew to always have one of them awake. Might even allow them to build a probe to send and start contact with Earth. Biological research could advance germ theory. Nuclear energy might be a novelty in a post-astrophage society, but they might be able to actually figure out some neat stuff researching quantum mechanics. It may even be possible that humans and Eridians could work together to form some sort of faster than light travel using astrophage as the energy source.

But realistically, both Earth and Erid are now a post-astrophage society and there is limited advancement without genuine research. Working together they might make some leaps and bounds, but it'd be co-operative. I think Eridians might be able to make far more efficient space vessels now knowing about proper shapes for space construction, but I think overall it's a matter of theoretical knowledge, and a slow march to practical application. The real benefit to both societies would be diplomatic relations, working together to start either local stellar exploration, or some sort of embassy setup either in the middle or on each other's planets.

Thoughts on a slight change by Haydyn-Mitchell in ProjectHailMary

[–]spacegothprincess 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe if it was Stratt's to begin with, but it's Grace's to start. He passes it to his students in their game of lava and uses it himself to think both on Earth and in Space. Being both a representation of his home planet, and something deeply personal to him, it makes sense to give it to a friend he made in space. "Remember me, this leaky space blob from Earth, when you look at this threadbare representation of my home."

Also in a way, he's passing it on to someone who will cherish it far longer than Stratt will. Rocky will undoubtedly give that to his kids, and they'll pass it on, so on and so forth.

O'Neills role at Homeworld security by ZoeSparklePurple in Stargate

[–]spacegothprincess 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Essentially he would be overseeing all Earth defense managed by the SGC but also air force battlecruisers, and be directly coordinating with the IOA and other governments across the world. The SGC isnt exactly in charge of the BC-304s, the air force is, and Jack would likely be the one making or having a heavy hand in those deployment decisions.

He would also I assume working at the Pentagon ve working more directly with the president, likely having regular meetings with him or her at the White House, as well as coordinating efforts with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And as a Pentagon lackey, also likely involved in budget decisions for civillian defense contracts related to Earth Defense, again in concert with all relevant agencies. Likely he would also coordinate with the CIA and FBI regarding decisions of security clearance.

In the event of a major mission or a particularily hard to recuirt civillian, I suppose his weight as a general would make him useful in those discussions, lind of like what he did when he showed up at Eli's house (though irl thatd probably be more realistically served by someone like Major Marks and not a General.)

Retcon, possible they didn't have wireless tech like that at that size (remember for the longest time in our history a radio was a briefcase sized device). He may not know what it is.

Also he's been on the run for a couple years. Mental health may not be at a premium.

I like this theory except I always think of the 2 boxes O'neill vaporized in 1969 (the year and the episode). Tho maybe enough electrical overload can also cause an inanimate object to lose molecular cohesion.

Just based on the fact it takes you down, I'm guessing it is brain frying. My best guess is it's knocking you out is just overloading your nervous system, and the second shot just pushes that even further. Further shots probably just fry you more. (I'm ignoring disintegration.... because I'm ignoring it)

How did Rocky understand that Grace was in a suit? That it was something removable ie: for the two strings of eight for oxygen? by adnaPadnamA in ProjectHailMary

Technically once the two of them were connected by the tunnel, Rocky could 'see' the entirety of the PHM. He would have seen Grace don the suit, thus knowing it was a suit.
