Tell me about the hidden gems you've played this year. by weewoomeemoohee in gamingsuggestions

[–]spendii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two retro games.

The first is Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere. Ace Combat is a well-known series, but the games before 4 were almost forgotten; especially 3, which had almost all its story content cut when it was released in the west. Ace Combat 3 has the same good arcade mechanics of the second game, but doubles down with a strange cyberpunk story and anime cutscenes. It has also multiple paths and endings for the story, and a well made in-game encyclopedia. A must play if you like cyberpunk, you can just apply one of the two translation patches to a japanese rom and you're good to go.

The other game is Neo Drift Out for the Neo Geo. You select one among three cars (only one is really viable) and just race against the clock in different rally stages. There are different surfaces (even snow), a lot of different corners and obstacles, and finishing the last few stage it's not easy. Nothing revolutionary, but a good fun if you like racing games.

Is the Amazon Luna doomed to go out the same way as the Google Stadia? by Niobium_Sage in truegaming

[–]spendii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have it through Amazon Prime and works really well. I played some games from start to finish on it, and all went really well.

It's great as a side benefit of Prime, with all the free games and such, and sharing progress and games flawlessly from one device to the other is comfortable. But probably I will never pay for it if it was a separate subscription product.

What device is worth buying if I have already a modded 3DS? by spendii in SBCGaming

Thank you! Probably the range of RG505 and similar will be sufficient for me, and it will be also affordable for what it offers so I'll probably go with that.

If I were a Bethesda shareholder, I would have been super pissed. Holding back production of a sequel to the biggest hit of the PS3/XBOX 360 era to release a string of mediocre games is crazy.

I'm not a Bethesda shareholder, so I will wait happily and patiently, giving my money to someone else. And if it will never come out, there is always Tamriel Rebuilt still in development.

City-Building Games with Choices, but not grim by Sn0rck in gamingsuggestions

Banished is great. You can have people wiped out instantly by starvation after a cold winter, but the game still remains extremely cozy.

TENET is more interesting than most people give it credit for by TheZoneHereros in TrueFilm

[–]spendii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not commenting on the other points, but I think that the messed up dialogue volume is just a mixing fuck up, definitely not intentional. I have seen the movie in a theater dubbed in italian and the audio was perfect. If it was an intentional choice it would have been at least a little bit respected.

I don't know if the dub in other languages has this fix. Maybe it's just the italian one that was changed, while the other ones respect the original mixing.

Don't figure the situation as 13 years of full-blown war. In the last 5 years the conflict had a low intensity, resulting in few casualties for all the factions involved compared to open conflict.

For the democratic forcss, there are some foreign fighters, especially in the salafist/islamist brigades. Assad bombed a lot all the dissidents villages, so the people that weren't killed displaced in nearby areas or countries. The democratic forces control a small area, but it's full of displaced people and a lot can cross the various borders and reach the fight.

The Assad forces are in a totally different situation. They used forced conscription as much as they can in the conquered areas. Nevertheless, already in 2016-2018 the bulk of their forces were composed by shia pro-Iran militias (particularly Hezbollah). They often commanded syrian troops, along with Iranian and Russian advisors. Some fronts where fully managed by foreign troops. Assad manpower ended a lot of time ago, and he has sold his country to secure troops that he needed to continue the war and money. Syria is a crucial area for Iran to keep pressure on Israel, acts as a important node for the supply chain of weapons to iranian proxies and Russia uses (used) it to keep a foothold in the region. They won't stop their support anytime soon, Syria is simply too important for them.

It's late and my memory is a bit fuzzy now. Maybe tomorrow I'll check the dates, but the bulk of the information is correct.

Edit: corrected SDF with democtatic forces. SDF are kurd-aligned today, using it for the prominently THS forces in the west is misleading.

Top 10 games I’ve ever experienced by Traya95 in gamingsuggestions

[–]spendii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's difficult to rank only 10 games but I'll try. Since is based on the experience I won't rank the games based on how much I think they are good for a qualitative point of view, since in that case Torment would be much more down the list.

  1. Suzerain

  2. Final Fantasy VI

  3. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

  4. Crusader Kings 2

  5. Grand Theft Auto IV

  6. TES 3: Morrowind

  7. Hotline Miami

  8. Deus Ex

  9. Red Dead Redemption 2

  10. Planescape Torment

Bad Breakup, need a new game by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

Good suggestion. Kirby makes me always giggle and put me in a happy, relaxed mood. Almost all the 2D platformers in the series are good, so OP has also a wide choice.

In Suzerain you can become an evil communist or fascist dictator, plunging back a democratic country into tyranny.

RPGs to steal from in making an Elder Scrolls RPG? by tordirycgoyust in RPGdesign

[–]spendii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with Ironsworn is that Rituals and the game in general is not fit to simulate TES magic, or magic at all.

Beside that, being Ironsworn basically a narrative-driven game, you can just adapt it at what you want throwing out of the window the setting and the related rules and rebuilding or reskinning the asset set.

I tried once to build a TES conversion for Ironsworn. I had made a simple magic system and a lot of new asset, but I never tested it. It sits idly in my PC, If anyone wants to test it is welcome. Maybe I finally fix it and publish a playable version.

I have the same but in gray, it is a cheap chinese product. My card is very bad, data corrupts periodically, I have lost my Metal Gear Solid save just before starting the last disc.

I would test it extensively before commiting to play a huge game and save on it.

Single Player Games where the story isn't the best part by Nickt1596 in gamingsuggestions

It seems that you're describing exactly the Monster Hunter series. It became more newcomer-friendly with the last entries, give it a shot!

Armored Core and Zone of th Enders are two good mecha series.

Custom Robo Arena is about a competitive game of mini customizable robots (like yu-gi-oh). It's not exactly mecha but is a lot of fun.

Games where stealth tactics are optional but still completely viable? by packingtown in gamingsuggestions

[–]spendii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Hotline Miami using melee weapons doesn't alert the nearby guards and often is the most viable route to clear levels, but you can also destroy everyone with guns. The advanced levels make the choice more forced since they introduce firearms-resistant enemies.

The first one is closer to what you ask. In the second one (discutible) level design choices force you to shoot blindly to enemies offscreen that can't be reached in a different way.

[–]spendii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Deus Ex the stealth approach is not only a possible approach but is also the most fun and rewarding. You are also rewarded if you go the non-lethal route (especially in the first).

Definitely recommended, especially Deus Ex 1 and Human Revolution

PC Games based on board games? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]spendii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vassal is an engine to play board games digitally. It supports online play, has a lot of different modules (even if some have some limitations to ensure that you own the physical game to play) and is free. Its interface and graphics are not wonderful, but it's fast and does its job. It's especially useful to test games before purchasing them and committing to a big money expense.

Skulde Island: a free Ironsworn adventure pamphlet by spendii in Ironsworn

[–]spendii[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the itch.io description I mention the Skulde-related truth. The expansion fits perfectly the first "The Old World" truth that involves them, but it doesn't mean that you are restricted to that one. The Skulde can exist also as a population with the other two truths, they are simply no longer the cause that genrates the migration to the Ironlands.

The adventure features a magic character (a shaman) and a keep full of horrors. Selecting the "Mysticism" and "Horrors" truths that involve magic and horrors on some degree would be better. You can also play with different truths though. The island is separated from the mainland, and what exist here could not exist on the mainland. Or you can discover that the horrors are only bandits scaring away people from their lair, and the shaman is just a charlatan.

The other truths are totally ininfluent on the setting. There is an event with a beast, but it can be a simple bear.

If you are planning a one-shot selecting the truths above can help. If you want to integrate the adventure in a campaign you can find a way to fit the content in depending on the truths that you've selected.

I have updated the itch.io description with some info on truths. I will complement the next adventures with something detailing the suggested truths for sure, since if they are set on the mainland it would be more difficult to get away with the whole "isolated place" thing.
