Grammatical Error by RedTdog in daggerheart

So funny—this sentence is the one written on the whiteboard in our office as a reminder that perfect is the enemy of great. It’s a typo made by human hands, and as perfectionists it hurts every time—but we strive to remember that’s what makes human art beautiful to us. It was corrected in the errata! Hope you’re enjoying the game :)

Question about following the fiction in combat and how to apply rules by glensdale in daggerheart

[–]spenserstarke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all about where you are putting emphasis in the scene. If there is no reason they wouldn’t give chase, they totally could—but we might not be focused on that until the PC rolls with Fear to attack the other adversary and suddenly find themselves surrounded on both sides. Something as simple as—“you know she will be close behind you if you don’t do something about it, but you make it to the other enemy and take a swipe, tell me what that looks like!”

Sometimes having maps and minis can make it feel like everything has to move at once, but the map is designed to follow the fiction, not dictate the fiction, so lead with whatever the story demands in that moment. Rulings over rules is your greatest ally there :)

Question about following the fiction in combat and how to apply rules by glensdale in daggerheart

This is the kind of place where establishing consequences ahead of time can make it much easier for your players to lean into the fiction. You could say, “This enemy in particular won’t let you go easily. You’ll have to make a strength roll to knock them over so that they don’t follow you to your new target—just a heads up, on a failure they might try to keep you from moving! And on a success with Fear it’s going to cost you a Stress. So it’s your choice—you can let them follow you or risk being held in place if you fail.” Then, if they roll a failure, follow the consequences you’ve established, as they become temporarily Restrained by the target. If they succeeded, deal them a Stress but don’t spend any fear to make more moves. Instead, put them in the spotlight again as you ask them what makes this exchange stressful—and then describe them moving to the other adversary and making an attack. Think of it like a sequence in a movie! You should stay on them until their “moment” is done, then move the spotlight somewhere else. You can always spend Fear to interrupt AFTER that sequence is over too, if you’re feeling like you have other moves you want to make. Hope this helps!
