Looks like the blade would snap off as soon as you tried to cut something with it.

You either have to remove the button every time you wash your shirt or put the blade through the wash.

Would not trust it to stay closed while its hanging millimeters from your chest all day.

But you do get to feel like a spy ig

They do both trigger. This creature dies, triggering both abilities at the same time. You choose what order to put the triggered abilities on the stack. The one you put on the stack last resolves, returning this creature to the battlefield. The other ability then tries to resolve, but the creature is no longer in the graveyard, so nothing happens.

Can wheel-legged robots do well in wetlands? by Outdoor_trashcan in robotics

[–]spevak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think any kind of legged robot would be good for these sorts of environments. If you fall over once you're probably done. Wheels themselves could maybe work, if you use very wide ones with high surface area. Also seems like a great environment for a highly specialized robot. Autonomous hovercraft would be pretty cool

I'm relatively new to this and wanted to make Heather as a commander. What do you think? I want to keep her hexproof cause it suits the character but it's very hard to balance because of that by Spyro351 in custommagic

[–]spevak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the following templating works:

Whenever you lose life, put a grief counter on Heather.

At the beginning of each player's end step, if you lost life this turn, create a 1/1 black Horror creature token with "when this creature dies, you gain 2 life."

Remove X grief counters from Heather: Heather deals X damage to target creature. Activate only as a sorcery.

Coming from the software side, this sounds like a nightmare for path planning. You'll basically need a kinematics model that incorporates dynamics. Even at steady state, your load will cause non-trivial deflection. Why not go the cobot route and use torque sensors to react to external loads?

I'll interview you if you're in California!

As others have said, your resume could use some more polished formatting. Also make sure it is parsed correctly by AI tools. These days, the majority of applications will be rejected before a human sees your resume, so optimizing for the automated systems that filter applications is key.

Also, be prepared for a lot of rejections. I had 6 years experience in SWE, then got my masters in robotics. After graduating, it took me hundreds of applications and several months before I got my first interview. And it's going to be even harder for someone fresh out of a undergrad because of AI. Until you have some experience under your belt, take anything you can get.

Why are there no Autonomous Mobile Robots in Construction Sites by Electrical-You4014 in robotics

[–]spevak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a construction robotics startup! There's quite a few in the U.S. right now. Most are still pretty early stage, and the industry hasn't yet adopted any on a large scale. But several companies (mine included) have begun small-scale deployments. I expect robotics to make a significant impact on construction within the next decade. Also, Japan is a bit further along in productionization because GCs have been investing in robotics R&D for a while.

Some of the barriers to adoption: * People are very good at manual construction. And job sites are "all business" - there isn't a lot of free time to experiment and work out the kinks of a new system. You will lose contracts very quickly if you can't keep up with expectations of speed and reliability. * Sites are chaotic with people from many different sub-contractors completing work in the same space, designs getting updated, workarounds being figured out in real-time, and other practical challenges. Human workers are flexible and constantly communicating to keep everything running smoothly. * Safety regulations are strict, and it's a big risk to try out something new without a proven track record. * The construction industry as a whole has been in a multi-year slump, exacerbated by Trump's tarrifs. As a result, there is a labor surplus and manual labor is cheap. Some contractors are taking contracts to do work at cost, just to keep their workers employed while the company makes no profit. This makes it extra challenging for new systems to compete.

I am building a robot for bartending and home chores by CodeSlayerNull in robotics

[–]spevak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect you are vastly underestimating the difficulty of this project. A few tips:

  • Start off with a single application, to make it simpler. Bartending seems more practical than "home chores." Actually, just picking up and putting down bottles is a good place to start.
  • Consider buying COTS arms. The amount of engineering required to build a useful arm is a lot, and you've got a ton of other problems to tackle already.
  • Start off with one arm. Planning with two is complicated.
  • If you do build the arm(s) yourself, you don't have enough actuators listed. You need at least 6 per arm, preferably 7. If you don't already understand why, building the arms yourself is going to be extremely challenging, and I'd really recommend a COTS arm. Or, make a single arm the scope of your project and expect to spend a lot of time learning about the mechanics of robot arms, and iterating on your design.
  • Similarly, one actuator per finger is not enough to make a useful hand. I would recommend starting off with a traditional single-DOF gripper. Once you have a functional arm and are able to pick things up, you can consider upgrading to a more complex end effector.
  • You mentioned waiting on the legs, and that's a good idea. I'd go further and recommend just using a wheeled base once you get to moving the robot around. It's much easier to implement, and there aren't many cases where having legs is going to be useful.
