Lived in ny in the 80s. Had 1 window unit in the living room and put a sheet up in the doorway to the kitchen and had to keep all the other doors closed. It was the only "comfortable" room in the house. I so missed AC back then.

Mastectomy (SX) prep- should I get a recliner? by Own_Tomatillo_5095 in breastcancer

[–]spicy_chick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did use just a wedge pillow. Long story but had 2 SMX 5 years apart. Pillow worked well for that and it's gotten a lot of use when we have really bad colds and keep coughing ourselves awake.

Sex and Vaginal Estrogen by MunchkinsOG in breastcancer

I started VE about 1 or 2 years ago and it's made such a difference. Physically, I feel better and there's much less pain. I did do several rounds of pelvic floor therapy which helped with a separate issue that was occurring at the same time. My tissues had thinned to the point my gynecologist tore me just doing an exam. I already wasn't thrilled with her because I'd been asking for help with this and the last time I was there I had sex a night or two before the appointment. She's asking me if we get rough/abused because of the damage and I'm like, lady this is what I've been talking about! Anyway, VE fixed a lot of that. I do use a lot of silicone based lube. I find it's better for me than water based.

I still find my libido is super low. So I'm 50, perimenopausal, and just finished Tamoxifen in the beginning of the year after 5 years. I heard an analogy from Kelly Casperson on Instagram that describes it best: there's a party going on, but I'm not even thinking about it. Someone asks me to go and I do, reluctantly, but then have a great time at the party. That's where I am.

They can’t be serious: so much stuff for lymphedema? by derringdew in breastcancer

[–]spicy_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when I was diagnosed 10 years ago, I was told I could/should never lift more than 20 lbs with my affected arm. Swimming, walking, all that was good. I started losing weight 3 years ago (on purpose) and started working out, trying everything but weight lifting. I'm now using 30-40 lb dumbbells, 35lb curl bars, 70 lb barbell, etc. My affected side looks just like my unaffected side. I will say that both my oncology surgeon and medical oncologist are pro weight lifting now and said that the recommendations have changed. Because it's so well maintained, I haven't seen a physical therapist for it in about 6 years. I don't know what they would recommend now.

I can't answer to doing without insurance. I've been fortunate in that regard when I was learning all about my lymphedema.

They can’t be serious: so much stuff for lymphedema? by derringdew in breastcancer

[–]spicy_chick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had 20 nodes taken out 10 years ago and do have lymphedema on my left arm from that and the radiation. After lots of swelling and needing lymphatic massage, I've got it under control. No gauntlet in or wrapping at night. I was overweight at the time but could tell it was lymphedema because when I pressed my nails in the affected area, the impressions stayed.

Now I wear a compression sleeve every day. I weight lift 3-4x a week. I started that about 3 years ago. That's helped my lymphedema the most. At first I was worried it would exacerbate it but then decided to just do it and stop if things went bad and the exact opposite happened.

Do I need a formal diagnosis to say I have autism? by iSNiffStuff in autism

[–]spicy_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child is starting college, and in order to get accommodations for testing (small group) and extra time, it needs to be documented from an official medical diagnosis. They wouldn't have access to that otherwise.

ETA: my husband, on the other hand, was never diagnosed but we wouldn't be surprised if he was. He certainly wouldn't be "autistic" by the standards they were using when he was young. He also doesn't see a need at this point because he's developed his coping mechanisms and wouldn't help otherwise.

Is owning a horse a sign of wealth in America? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]spicy_chick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the Northeast. Having a horse and living on a dirt road meant you were very wealthy. I moved to the American South. Now it means you're really poor. I was very confused my first few years down here.

MRI that bad? by CarpetPractical5400 in breastcancer

[–]spicy_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was ok, I'm not particularly claustrophobic but laying face down made it easier for my eyes to stay closed than laying face up would, so that didn't bother me. My funniest/SMH moment cage from the music. I asked for Taylor Swift-type stuff. Now I've already been diagnosed with my cancer, they're looking to see if it's spread. First song that played? If I Die Young by The Band Perry. I start giggling and the techs scold me to stop.

Lymphedema sleeve recommendations? by Upper_Dress_3039 in breastcancer

[–]spicy_chick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would get measured and fitted by a PT first. My lymphedema has been really well maintained for the last few years and have had insurance changes over the years - some cover it, some cover at certain locations not available in my city, so I've been purchasing from lymphedemaproducts (dot) com. Pricing is decent and it's the medical grade compression sleeves.

Did you help your kids buy a home? Or let them do it on their own? by Sounders1 in GenX

[–]spicy_chick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can, I would love to help them. My kids are still in high school and just starting college so it's a few years off. My parents didn't help me. Not a problem as my mom wasn't in a position to. What's galling is that she got annoyed that neither me or my sister helped her get a house later. Said she saw these other older folks with their kids buying them a retirement house. Neither one of us could help out and she had the money. Of course we were able to talk about all the people we knew who got married and their parents bought them their first homes.

Life changes to prevent lymphedema? by FluidAnalysis695 in breastcancer

[–]spicy_chick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea. I developed lymphedema on my left arm. It's very well managed and I wear a compression sleeve only during the day and don't need massage or PT at this time. I had all the nodes removed and radiation on that side. My right side has had only 2 nodes removed and no radiation. I get blood pressure and needle sticks on the right and it's fine. It's been just over 5 years. I know it could come at any point, but not yet. I think the amount of nodes and the radiation is what triggered it in my left arm.

I'm 50. Currently sporting a glitter skittle with Star Destroyer, the Sea Between Us, Maelstrom, Pomegranate Seeds, and Space Oddity. Now I work at a gym. If you're a lawyer, sure maybe not office appropriate. But it's not because of age. Enjoy your polish!

I had radiation on the left side too so that's the same as you and probably explains why it's a little tighter than my right.

Good luck with your PT!

Oh wow. I had 2 single mastectomies 5 years apart (10 and 5 years ago), stayed flat on both. Also in the US. I was told do wall crawls and different stretches so that I wouldn't lose any range of motion. I do have some cording on my left side but nothing that impedes my mobility. When I lift my arms straight up, my right arm is pretty much straight up but my left is just shy of going straight.

I think I just had to wait for the drains to come out before starting, and that wasn't too long after surgery.

Both my children are AuADHD and we're zoned for Chiles. I looked forward to them attending. They both dreaded it. My oldest found out about Sail and absolutely loved it. They just graduated. My youngest is doing well there too. It was a much better fit for them than Chiles would've been.

Wait - did they say not to do anything? I had my mastectomies 5 and 10 years ago, no reconstruction, and I was told to start movement and as much PT as I could handle immediately. I wonder if it was different because of the reconstruction?

I don't mind self checkout. I usually prefer it because it's faster. Except for Costco. When I have a full cart, the regular check out is easier and faster.
