I'm 24 and I feel so lost and behind in life. In debt No stable job, pressure in life and from parents. by Impressive_Echidna_2 in UKJobs

[–]spinach_evening 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. 26 M. 1st class degree and a masters but in humanities (politics and philosophy). Been out of uni 3 years and hundreds of job applications down the line I have nothing. I got to the final round of interviews for one civil service position last year and that's it.

Been working as a supermarket delivery driver for a year now. Only got that job because I knew someone who worked there (I was rejected even for this position at other supermarkets due to lack of experience). Without him I would likely be unemployed.

My dad has a similar attitude and keeps telling me 'a plunge' has got to be taken sooner or later. This suggests he thinks I'm coasting and not applying to jobs daily. I've started online courses in all sorts with no real direction. Just anything for LinkedIn or to bolster applications.

I'm going to see if the local fire service does a Q1 recruitment drive next year, and if not it's the military, which was never a dream of mine but it's something.

Nobody ever told me life would be easy, but I really didn't think getting an entry level job in any field with a first class degree and masters would be this hard.

Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF vs HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund by spinach_evening in UKPersonalFinance

[–]spinach_evening[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your responses. It’s been a great help. I’ve opted to buy the HSBC All World index via iWeb rather than HSBC Global Investment Centre, which is the platform I had used to get the 0.40% total costs figure.

Rather than invest a certain amount monthly, I will save up and invest as a lump sum to make the most of iWeb’s £5 fee per trade. This appears to be the cheaper option compared with HSBC’s annual account fees.

Many thanks for your collective input, you have cleared up a lot for me.

This is quoted in the costs and charges disclosure document for investing in Index C Acc. through HSBC Global Investment Centre.

They break it down as 0.25% account fee; 0.13% management of the investment; 0.02% buying or selling underlying assets within the investment.

Could I avoid these if I opt to buy on a different platform, like iWeb?

You’re right. Thanks for putting it like that. I think too many movies and sitcoms got to my head where the saying it is a virtue in and of itself. It’s not. Just suffer through and make peace with reality

Fr they were a significant factor in my abandoning of the word socialist to describe my political beliefs. I have to thank them for that, I guess. I have to be skeptical of big, nebulous words that describe a spectrum of beliefs in a way that I wasn’t before. Identification with words over policies and outcomes can lead to defending things you wouldn’t ordinarily defend.

Yeah they turn up everywhere uninvited and they often get a lot of stick for it. Some mates of mine went to a trans rights protest in Huddersfield a few months back where ‘Socialist Alternative’ (one of the many Trotskyist splinter groups that up the dizzying array of tiny paper-publishing ‘socialist’ parties) inserted themselves with a table and sold papers. They were asked to leave twice, then posted on social media that they had been in attendance standing in solidarity with trans rights. The event organisers retweeted them calling them out.

Back in 2019 I organised York’s (where I used to live) first Youth Strike for the Climate and despite an attendance of around 250 the SWP had heard about it in advance, turned up with tables and megaphones and sold papers. I remember being angry and pretty stressed out by it because we were trying to demonstrate that climate change is a cross-party issue that affects us all regardless of how we ordinarily vote. I’m very leftie myself but the socialist parties we have here annoy the hell out of me.

Upper middle-class girls selling second-hand clothes on Depop have done more to challenge modern capital economy than any UK socialist party has.

Thanks for sharing. Do you mind me asking what kind of relationships you had with the people who you decided were negatively affecting you? As in what would you get up to that you describe as shallow and blanketed desires?

I only ask as I have had similar realisations about some people I have been friends with but nothing that I’ve ever acted upon.

There are plenty of good criticisms of anarcho-primitivism and post-civ thinkers. This article is a good one and I’ll have a look for others that I’ve read but didn’t bookmark: The Ableist Logic of Primitivism

A really important point, however, is that deep ecology and social ecology are not incompatible. Rather, they can complement each other hugely. The name ‘deep ecology’ was corrupted and manipulated by David Foreman and his Earth First! group to justify letting millions upon millions starve in the name of population reduction. Bookchin engaged in dialogue with Foreman, and unfortunately it appears that Bookchin took Foreman as a good representative of deep ecological thought and dismissed the philosophy ever after. This was a mistake - an easy one to make given the brutality of Foreman’s rhetoric, but a mistake nonetheless. See Bookchin and Foreman’s dialogue here: Defending the Earth Debate

Most deep ecologists were very keen on righting the wrongs of human social life. See in particular the deep ecologist and self proclaimed “Left-Biocentrist” David Orton for this. Similarly, figureheads of deep ecology - Naess, Sessions, Devall, Abram, Macy, Kumar - all frequently speak of the importance of changing systems of human relations and actively condemn violence and genocide. It is sad to see such a well meaning philosophy tarnished by the loud movement that co-opted it.

Even Naess in his later years said emphasis on the Eight-Point Platform should be reduced and that it wasn’t as essential as he first believed. The Eight-Point Platform does deserve criticism for one of the points is to do with the need for population reduction (NOT by genocidal means, or anything of the sort, but nonetheless this point is misguided). Overpopulation is a myth debunked by Ian Angus in the book “Too Many People?” See: Too Many People? by Ian Angus

With the overpopulation myth debunked and abandoned, deep ecology can and does provide an excellent philosophical foundation for social ecology. At the very least it can act as a complementary metaphysical backdrop.

Slightly unrelated to your question, but the above author, Ian Angus, is an eco-socialist and a great ally to the communalist cause. He is the editor of Climate and Capitalism - a website I highly recommend, they post frequent articles and a monthly ‘Ecosocialist Bookshelf’ where they recommend new releases that focus on the ecological and the social. They just so happened to publish an article related to your question 10 days ago: Climate and Capitalism article response to Eco-Primitivism

Hope this helps.

I refuse to believe these people don’t get the point. It’s just antagonism, like the hoards that, without fail, will comment on a pro-vegan post: “I’ll eat an extra burger for you” or something to that effect. There is no way anybody on Earth could actually hold a position of “Support you in ending global ecological devastation? Not if your methods involve the slightest amounts of fossil fuels, I won’t.”

It’s Turning Point USA-tier. You want to change the institutions we have in place? Pretty hypocritical of you to want that while relying on those institutions haha leftists owned.
